					  Science Homework B4:
     Homeostasis

                   Biology in action!!!!

Every moment of your life your body is reacting to
changes. Your body responds to these changes to make sure that conditions inside
your body stay steady. Keeping a steady state inside your body is called homeostasis.

You need to produce a power point presentation.

You are required to work your way through the following points.
Try to complete as many as possible.
        ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Briefly describe what homeostasis is and why it is important.
Explain the ‘control systems’ for keeping a steady state in your body.
        ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Explain why you cannot live without enzymes in your body.
Explain how temperature and pH can affect these enzymes.
Describe how our bodies warm up and cool down and how our
             bodies do this.
         --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Explain why vasodilation and vasoconstriction are said to be
        controlled by antagonistic effectors.
Water homeostasis is important for our bodies explain how
our kidneys balance our water levels.
In a few people the cells that produce ADH are destroyed.
Suggest what happens to them and what treatment they need.

                 Criteria for good homework:
Clearly set out and reasoned opinions
                 Factual information clearly set out
                 Detailed evaluations
                 Scientific terminology

  Science Homework C4:
     Chemical Patterns

                   Fireworks!!!!

The periodic table is so important in chemistry because
it helps to make sense of the mass of information about
all the elements and their compounds. The table offers a framework that can give
meaning to all the facts about properties and reactions.

You are to write an article for a scientific magazine about how fireworks work and the
chemical/elements used to make different fireworks.

You are required to work your way through the following points.
Try to complete as many as possible.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Write a small, background, piece about the periodic table and its history.
Explain where we find the alkali metals on the periodic table and their properties.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Include diagrams or pictures of the different fireworks that you
                           discuss.
Name the different chemicals/elements used in fireworks.
Describe how each chemical/element affects the firework.
                            Discuss the dangers of fireworks.

                    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Design packaging for fireworks, think of safety as well as
        presentation.
Explain what hazard symbols would you put on the fireworks and
        why.
Explain the chemical labelling you would put on fireworks and explain why.
Describe some of the chemical process involved in fireworks, with equations
where possible, to describe basic reactions.

  Science Homework P4:
     Explaining Motion

How and why do things go bump?

Humans have always been interested in how things move and why they move the way
they do. Motion is such an obvious part of our everyday lives that we cannot really
claim to know very much about the natural world if we cannot explain and predict
how objects move.

You need to produce an A3 poster, with a fact file attached, e.g 6 pages of writing, on
A4.

You are required to work your way through the following points.
Try to complete as many as possible.
      ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Explain how forces arise.
Describe how forces enable people and vehicles to get moving.
Explain how we calculate the speed of a moving vehicle.
      ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Explain how understanding forces and motion has enabled
scientists and engineers to design and build efficient cars or trains
        or aircraft.
Describe how scientists have used this understanding to fly
spacecraft with enormous accuracy to the furthest reaches of the
        Solar System.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Explain how understanding of forces and motion is used to improve the
                design of prosthetics for athletes.
Explain how a roller coaster works in terms of kinetic energy, gravitational
                 potential energy.
Describe how a scientist can calculate the speed of a moving roller
                coaster.

    Criteria for good homework:
Clearly set out and reasoned opinions
    Factual information clearly set out
    Detailed evaluations
