University of florida Gator Football 2009 Spring Guide 2009 FLORIDA FOOTBALL - Florida is one of four teams to be ranked in the preseason top-10 of the AP Poll in each of the last four years (2005, 06, 07, 08). LSU, Oklahoma and USC are the others. - The 2009 Florida football team enters the season with 19 returning starters on offense and defense. The entire two-deep depth chart returns from a defense that led the nation in interceptions, ranked fourth in scoring defense and finished ninth in the nation in total defense. - The SEC’s top-ranked offense from 2008 returns 100 percent of its passing yards and 75 percent of its rushing yards. Quarterback Tim Tebow returns as the team’s leading passer (2,746 yards in ‘08) and rusher (673 yards in ‘08). - Tim Tebow ranks in the top five nationally among returning quarterbacks in eight statistical categories: passer rating (2nd), yards per attempt (2nd), touchdown percentage (2nd), interception percentage (2nd), yards per completion (3rd), completion percentage (5th), rushing yards (4th) and rushing TDs (1st). Tebow ranks first among all players, regardless of position, in rushing touchdowns. He ranks 7th in touchdown passes among returning players. - Brandon James ranks first in the nation in total return yards among all players returning in 2009. He is second in the nation with four punt return touchdowns and second in punt return yards. He ranks third in punt return average and sixth in kick return yards among returners. - The 2009 group of linebackers will be one of the most experienced in the country. Out of a possible 77 starts at the three linebacker positions the past two years, every start was made by a linebacker that returns in 2009. Brandon Spikes has made 27 career starts, A.J. Jones has 18, Dustin Doe has 16, Ryan Stamper has 12 and Brandon Hicks has 6. - The loss of offensive tackles Phil Trautwein and Jason Watkins will lead to some reshuffling along the offensive line. While Maurkice and Mike Pouncey are expected retain their starting roles, both tackle positions and the left guard position are open for competition. Matt Patchan, who came to UF as an offensive lineman and played defensive tackle last season, returns to the offensive line. Other returning players expected to compete for playing time on the offensive line include Marcus Gilbert, Corey Hobbs, Maurice Hurt, Sam Robey, James Wilson and David Young.
