                                 Clyde's Simplified Character Creation
                               Guide for Dungeons and Dragons, 4th Edition


Introduction:


This guide is designed to assist you in rolling a new D&D character using fourth edition rules without resorting to
using online tools or character creators, which can often be confusing and overwhelming for new players.
Essentially, I intend to create an easy-to-follow and simple schedule for creating a character, that a new player can
follow without having to sift through 200 pages of the player's handbook. Additionally, this serves as a great quick
reference for comparing the races and classes without flipping a lot of pages. This doesn't mean that I won't
reference things in the book, or send you to look at certain sections or tables. What it does mean is that with this
guide, a player's handbook and about an hour (or less) you can have a new character, and be ready to play. Good

Step 01: Choose your Race

Character Races begin on page thirty-five in the Player's Handbook and continue through page fifty. Take a look at
these two tables and see what race appeals to you most.

Step 02: Choose your Class


The next step is to choose your class. Obviously, I recommend reading all of chapter four to fully grasp all of your
options, but feel free to peruse the table below to see a brief overview of the classes.

Step 03: Determine Your Ability Scores

There are three methods to determine your six ability scores, (Strength, Constitution, Dexterity, Intelligence, Wisdom,
and Charisma.) At this point, its a good idea to print out a character sheet, grab a pencil and start filing in the details if
you haven't already.

Method A: Standard Array
      Use the “Standard Array.” Assign these numbers to your abilities anyway you like: 16, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10.
      Don't forget to apply your racial adjustments!

Method B: Custom Array
      Start with five 10s and one 8. You have 22 points to “spend” on improving these scores in any way you see
      fit. Page 18 has a nice chart that shows a few of the arrays that can be developed using this system. You can
      use any of them if you'd like. Don't forget to apply your racial adjustments!

Method C: 'Roll Your Own'
      Roll four six-sided dice (4d6) and add up the three highest numbers. Do this six times, (once for each ability
      score) and assign the numbers to whichever traits you would like. Don't forget to apply your racial
      adjustments!

Be sure to visit page 18 in the PH (player's handbook) and use the chart to determine your ability modifiers for
Fortitude, Reflex, and Will. The Chart on page 29 may also help by breaking down your needs.


Step 04: Fleshing Out Your Character

Skills and Feats
Your class determines how many skills you start out with at Level 1. Info about skills is in Chapter five of the PH.
You also get one heroic tier feat at level 1, (two if you've chosen human as your race).

Alignment
Choose your alignment, see page 19 for details.

Deities
Choose a deity, if applicable, or if you wish to. Some classes should definitely select a deity, such as a cleric, but
others it doesn't matter as much if you don't want to choose a deity.

Just WHO is your character?
Fill in some details about your character's personality, mannerisms, appearance, background and so on if you'd like.
The book discusses this on pages 23-24.

Languages / Scripts
Your class determines what languages your character speaks and writes. Some classes allow you to select an
additional language in addition to the standard offering.

Step 05: Getting Started With Equipment

At level 1, your character begins with 100gp. That's enough to equip yourself with basic gear, and maybe have a little
change when you're done. Be sure to read the chapter on equipment to be sure your character can use the gear, and so
that you understand the gear you're buying.


Step 06: Fill out a Character Sheet

Using the help you've gotten here and the references on page 30-31, fill out a character sheet and double-check it.
You should be finished rolling your new 4th edition D&D character!
