Profession-related competencies: general description
I International Business Competencies
1. International Business Awareness      The ability to outline and evaluate the key patterns and trends in international business activity, the different approaches
                                         to internationalisation, the influence of increasing globalisation, international trade systems and financial relations and
                                         the role of several principal institutions (e.g. WTO, EU, IMF, World Bank) on international business. The student can
                                         assess the impact of these trends on his own activities as well on the business policy.
2. Intercultural Adaptability            The ability to explain the differences between national, organisational and occupational cultures and to outline strategies
                                         for adapting to these differences in e.g. human resources management, marketing and intercultural communication. The
                                         student can identify the relevant dimensions of cultures and has developed self-awareness of his own cultural
                                         background. He is able to adapt his behaviour to the standards in other cultures and can maintain an international
                                         network essential to his tasks.
II General Management Competencies
3. International Strategic Vision        The ability to use his conceptual and visionary skills to contribute to the development and evaluation of the

4. Organisational Policy Development         The ability to research and analyse relevant international business problems, to propose policy goals and objectives and

III Functional Key-Areas Competencies
6. International Marketing Management        The ability to perform a country-analysis on macro, industry and micro level, to conduct an international market survey in
                                             order to assess foreign market opportunities and competition. The ability to formulate market-entry strategies, to draft an
                                             international marketing plan and to implement, co-ordinate and control the international marketing (and sales)
                                             programme.
7. International Operations Management       The ability to assess processes and decisions involved in developing international, i.e. export/import operations,
                                             focussing on supply chain management and to explain the meaning and application of key logistical concepts.
8. International Business and                The ability to perform a variety of cost and revenue calculations and to transform these data into information needed for
   Management Accounting and Financial       decision making and the budgeting process (management accounting).
   Management                                The ability to contribute to and evaluate key accounting summaries (profit and loss account, balance sheet and cash-
                                             flow statement) and to outline the differences between various external reporting standards (financial accounting).
                                             The ability to evaluate investment opportunities, to contribute to the assessment of long-term and short-term debt and
                                             equity financing and to contribute to managing financial risks (financial management).

Generic competencies: general description
I Interpersonal competencies
1. Leadership                           The ability to take initiative and a leading role within a (project) team in order to reach a defined goal.

2. Co-operation                              The ability to actively contribute to a group product or result.

3. Communication (oral and written).         The ability to express himself fluently and correctly in English, both in speech and writing.
                                             The ability to express himself at an intermediate level in a second foreign language (in addition to English and his native
                                             language).
                                             The ability to lead discussions, express his ideas, make proposals, draft reports and give presentations. The ability to
                                             make proper use of audio-visual aids in his presentations.

 Task-oriented competencies
4. Analysing and information processing.     The ability to apply relevant scientific insights, theories and concepts, to combine several subjects, to gather information
                                             and draw conclusions in a methodical and reflective manner.
                                             The ability to act carefully and punctually and to produce output that is literate, numerate and coherent.

5. Creative problem solving.                 The ability to define and analyse complex situations, to develop alternative solutions to problems that are neither
                                             straightforward nor subject to standard procedures and to assess the effects.

6. Planning and organising.                  The ability to plan, manage, control and evaluate personal work activities and group work in projects. The ability to make
                                             use of relevant techniques in his activities to monitor his own performance.

Intra-personal competencies
7. Learning and self- development            The ability to know his strengths and weaknesses and to indicate how and when he intends to improve his weaknesses;
                                             he knows the limits of his competencies and can critically evaluate and account for his own actions; he can take criticism
                                             and put it to good use. Takes initiative and works independently.

8. Ethical responsibility                    Understanding of the ethical, normative and social issues related to the professional practice and accepting the
                                             responsibility for his actions.

IBMS competencies
Level specification of the profession-related and generic competencies

This level specification is only applicable for the profession-related competencies.
For the specification of the competencies the level descriptors will be given. The general format is:


Level 1      The ability to execute a simple task. The student has the basic knowledge and skills to apply   In most educational situations this
             the competency with guidance in a limited context                                               will be learned in the first year.
Level 2      The student can apply the competency independently in a relatively clearly arranged situation   This will normally be at the end of

Level 3      The student can apply the competency independently in a complex situation with complete         Bachelor-level

Level 4      Flexible application of the competency in complex situations. Student can evaluate his          Master-level

IBMS notes
Notes (general)
1.   (*) Yet to be decided which specific case will be carried out in this block.
2.   In principle, the structure of each 10 week block is as follows: 7 weeks of lectures; 1 week buffer; 1 week of exams; 1 week of resits of the preceding block.
     Depending on certain circumstances, a block might differ (no buffer week, no resit week, two resit weeks). However, there are always 7 weeks of lectures.
3.   Cases have to be carried out during the lecture weeks. A presentation of a case can occur in the buffer week or in the exam week.
4.   All generic competencies will be trained during all blocks. It still has to be decided which generic competencies will be tested in which block. This will depend greatly
     on the exact contents of each block.
5.   Excel skills are essential (not just a spreadsheet, but complex structures including macros etc.: Access is not essential as it is not a stable enough environment for
     businesses.

Notes (year 1):
1.   Teaching max. ±18 hours/week; coaching max. ±6 hours/week; tutorage 2 hours/week
2.   To be introduced in the academic year 2005/2006

Notes (year 2):
1.   Teaching max. ±16 hours/week; coaching max. ±10 hours/week; tutorage 2 hours/week
2.   To be introduced in the academic year 2006/2007
3.   Block 2.4 includes working with SAP (max 2 ECTS) in cooperation with the BE and AC departments

Notes (year 3):
1.   Study abroad:
     -             one module (15 ECTS) of 3 compulsory subjects (Marketing; Business & Finance; Logistics)
     -             one module (15 ECTS) of max 3 selected subjects (to allow students to choose majors and minors)
2.   Universities abroad not always allow students to select more than 4 or 5 subjects in any semester. Nearly all universities abroad offer semester courses, not quarter
     courses.

Notes (year 4):
1.   Teaching max. ±12 hours/week; coaching max. ±14 hours/week; tutorage 2 hours/week
2.   To be introduced in the academic year 2007/2008
3.   Block 4.1 includes working with SAP (2 ECTS) in cooperation with the BE and AC departments
4.   Block 4.4 includes modules, developed in cooperation with Maastricht University (for those students who have opted for a master study at the UM), and/or "Selected
     Topics (Capita Selecta)" (for those students who have not opted for a master study at the UM).
