Diwali has many legends attached to it as most of the Indian Festivals has.
Towards the origin of Diwali, it was merely an important harvesting festival,
according to the Indian history. Yet there are a few legends narrating how
Diwali is culturally important in India. Diwali speaks about the celebration of
the Lord Rama with Sita and Laxman returning from his fourteen years of exile
and destroying the demon king Ravana. The people of Ayodhya illuminated the
entire kingdom with diyas to express their happiness on their king’s return.
The celebration of the marriage of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Shiva is one
among the legends of Diwali. Lord Mahavira attained nirvana on this festive day
according to Jainism.
