Boston Teachers Union School Overview
The BTU School will provide students with a rich and rigorous education, providing a foundation in the liberal arts, which will prepare students for success in high school, college and beyond. We aim to create an environment of respect and love for learning that encompasses the entire community of students, staff, and families. The BTU School will be unique in its emphasis on the liberal arts. We believe that for too long, the emphasis solely on increasing test scores in language arts and mathematics for poor children in urban schools has closed doors that are taken for granted by children of means. We aim to hold all students to high and rigorous standards in the areas of language and mathematics, but at the same time encourage study of social studies, including civics, geography, and history, along with natural sciences and foreign language study. We will provide opportunities for students to develop their skills in visual arts and music, and physical education. The BTU School will be unique in that it is a teacher-run school. The faculty will work together to make all-important decisions regarding the school. We believe that unleashing the potential of excellent teachers is the best way to provide a wide-ranging, high-quality education to all of our children. The faculty will also work together to develop an innovative and rigorous professional growth program for teachers and paraprofessionals, including a professional development center and an evaluation program.
