The Center for Collaborative Education is seeking a qualified candidate to be the Los Angeles
Field Director, to assist the Los Angeles Unified School District to create 10 small high schools,
patterned after the Pilot Schools model in Boston, MA. This is a full-time position, housed at the
Los Angeles Small Schools Collective, located in the Pico-Union neighborhood of Los Angeles.
This position reports directly to CCE’s Executive Director in Boston, MA.

Background on CCE
The mission of the Center for Collaborative Education (CCE) is to transform schools to ensure
that all students succeed. We believe that schools should prepare every student to achieve
academically and make a positive contribution to a democratic society. CCE partners with
public schools and districts to create and sustain effective and equitable schools.

We fulfill this mission in four primary ways:
o Building understanding with the larger public that innovative schools can increase
   opportunity and justice for every student.
o Creating effective models of urban education and district redesign.
o Providing onsite coaching, professional development, and networking opportunities for
   educators.
o Conducting research that documents school progress and student results.

CCE seeks to create schools in which:
 Learning is purposeful, rigorous, and related to the real world,
 Assessment demonstrates that students can do important things,
 Teachers and students know each other well,
 Diversity is respected and equity is embedded in all practices,
 Democratic values are nurtured and modeled, and
 Flexibility and autonomy enable decisions to be made as close to the learner as possible.

Pilot Schools in Boston and Los Angeles
The Center for Collaborative Education is the convening organization for the Boston Pilot
Schools Network, a group of Boston Public Schools that has autonomy over budget, staffing,
governance, curriculum, and school calendar through an innovative teacher union/school district
partnership and teacher union contract. There are currently 20 Pilot Schools enrolling 11% of the
total Boston Public Schools’ student enrollment. These schools are committed to be small,
personalized, democratic, and equitable schools. The Center has worked with the Boston Pilot
Schools since their inception, assisting them in start-up and in the building of a Boston Pilot
Schools Network. Center staff provide coaching, technical assistance, network-wide professional
development, district advocacy, community organizing, and research and evaluation to the Pilot

Schools Network. Longitudinal data indicates that Pilot School students outpace the regular
district public schools in all measures of student engagement and achievement.

Based on these results, CCE is partnering with the Los Angeles Unified School District
(LAUSD), United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA), Administrators Association of Los Angeles
(AALA), Belmont Education Collaborative (BEC), and Los Angeles Small Schools Collective
(LASSC) to replicate the Pilot School model in the Belmont, Pico-Union neighborhood of Los
Angeles, a section of District 4. Over the next three years, a total of 10 small Pilot high schools
will be created, mostly in new facilities, housing no more than 450 students, and having
autonomy over budget, staffing, curriculum, governance, and schedule, with teachers remaining
members of UTLA. CCE seeks a Los Angeles-based director to spearhead this initiative.

The Los Angeles Field Director
The Los Angeles Pilot Schools Field Director will be responsible for coordinating CCE’s work in
launching the Belmont Pilot Schools Network in the Los Angeles Unified School District, as well
as any future expansion of Pilot Schools within LAUSD. The person will be supported by the
Los Angeles Small Schools Collective and Boston-based CCE staff, and work closely with the
LAUSD Pilot Schools Director to support his role and work. Responsibilities will include the
following:

District-Wide:
 Collaborate with key CCE staff, the LAUSD Belmont Pilot Schools Director, and the LASSC
    staff to plan and facilitate all aspects of the Belmont Pilot Schools Network
 Provide support to the LAUSD Belmont Pilot Schools Director in the following areas:
    o Work with key central office personnel and departments – including budget, staff
         relations, facilities, and curriculum – to ensure that all Pilot autonomies are in place for
         the Belmont Pilot Schools
    o Work with UTLA and AALA to ensure their continuing support of the Belmont Pilot
         Schools
    o Preparing for and participating in regular meetings of the Pilot Schools Steering
         Committee, the district-wide body that oversees the Belmont Pilot Schools
 Work with Los Angeles print, radio, and TV media to generate media and public spotlight on
    the Belmont Pilot Schools

Capacity Building
 Help build the capacity of the Los Angeles Small Schools Collective to gain the technical
   capacity and knowledge to become the lead intermediary organization in serving the Belmont
   Pilot Schools within three years

School Support
 Assist in the process of Pilot School design selection
 Help plan and facilitate training for design teams and newly selected schools
 Work with the LAUSD Belmont Pilot Schools Director to ensure that selected design teams
   get facilities that match their approved design
 Provide coaching and professional development to individual Pilot Schools
 Assist in planning and conducting Belmont Pilot Schools network-wide professional
   development, including sharing practice, leadership development, professional development
   days, summer institutes, and school visits
 Assist in coordinating the Pilot School Quality Review process

Community Engagement
 Interface with the Belmont Education Collaborative, a coalition of 20-25 community
   organizations that support the Belmont Pilot Schools,, to maintain strong advocacy ties with
   the Belmont Pilot Schools
 Assist in building community awareness and family interest in the Pilot Schools

CCE Responsibilities
 Work collaboratively as a member of the Center staff to support all Center programs and to
  contribute positively to the CCE organizational culture
 Assist in coordinating the documentation and research efforts of CCE and UCLA
 Coordinate Center special projects, as assigned by the executive director

Qualifications
The successful candidate for the position of Los Angeles Field Director should have the following
qualifications:
     Bachelors and advanced degrees in education or a related field
     Experience working in public schools, either in a teaching capacity or other professional
        role
     Experience leading a small schools reform effort, either as a staff person or as an outside
        facilitator
     Knowledge and understanding of theory and practice of school reform and instruction,
        curriculum, and assessment
     Familiarity with the Coalition of Essential Schools philosophy, principles, and practice
     Strong facilitation and teaming skills
     Good writing skills
     Fluency in Spanish is a plus
