124. Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch Resort (Tucson)

Suggested Retail Value: $188
Guaranteed Maximum Purchase Price: $150

Enjoy a one-night stay in this three-star resort located in the Saguaro National Park. Built in 1929 as a finishing school for girls, this
property was at one time a guest ranch that attracted stars such as Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy. After riding several furlongs on
its reputation, this traditional Santa Fe-style resort was ready for pasture when new owners brought a second wind to the old pony.
They wisely left its austere desert character intact. They also added the amenities of a boutique-hotel, most notably fine dining.
Bougainvillea, cacti and palms illuminate the courtyards, bright paint adorns walls and windows, and religious regional folk art
captures the attention of arrivals. In fact, the resort almost has the feel of an ancient cloister, with carved wooden benches and a
fountain with a statue of St. Francis. Tranquility is a given. The lobby boasts a fireplace and carved beams, and the library next to it
is cozy with period furniture and stocked bookshelves. Breakfast service is offered for hotel guests only. A lounge faces a charming
courtyard with a fireplace, cactus garden and large fountain, and a cozy bar serves up drinks. A gulch-side pool, hot tub, massage
room, croquet, horseshoes and shuffleboard are recreational options. Stables offer trail rides in the winter months. Nature walks are
popular, with guests often espying javelinas, snakes, tarantulas and even bobcats. (A sign warns, "Leave Them Alone and They Will
Return the Favor.") Guest rooms show bold Mexican colors and Spanish colonial decor, with cheerful prints, antiques, and painted
furniture from across the border. Most are large, and each is uniquely decorated with handwoven rugs. Some rooms have a cattle-
rustler theme, and all provide TVs, dual-line phones, coffeemakers, high-speed Internet access, and irons and ironing boards. This
unique hotel is one of the best in Tucson thanks to its fine dining, enthusiastic, energetic staff and historic Sonoran architecture.
Valid through October 30, 2005.

circular koa coffee tables with mission overtones. Reception is friendly and efficient, and long lines are a rarity. The main terrace
dining beside the pool area hosts all meals amid Polynesian styling. More formal and expensive dining is near the beach, where the
subtle sounds of steak knives and surf merge harmoniously. There are two bars, one with nightly entertainment. Each night, a torch-
lighting ceremony coincides with sunset, followed by voluptuous Hawaiian dancers. The three-story accommodation wings cup the
lush and elaborate pool area, where small waterfalls spill off a grotto into three lagoon-style sections. This chlorinated pond is safer
than the beach, especially during the winter months when signs warn: "Sharp Coral, Strong Currents, High Surf, Dangerous
Shorebreak." Surprisingly, summer invites snorkeling. Of the four tennis courts, two are lighted. Guests receive preferential
treatment at nearby Wailua Golf Course, and the tour desk has good connections. Free valet parking adds a dash of luxury,
particularly since the parking area lies some distance from the front door. This is one of the best gathering places on the island.

The Gila River Indian Community has woven championship golf with its rich cultural heritage to create Whirlwind Golf Club.
Whirlwind Golf Club currently offers 36 holes of championship golf including the 7017-yard Devil's Claw course. Gary Panks has
designed a masterpiece that will challenge players of all levels while maintaining a sense of fairness and playability. The Devil's
Claw course reflects the plant palette indigenous to the Gila River - Mesquite, Saguaro, Palo Verde, and Cottonwood blend with
native grasses to recreate the Gila River as it was when the waters still flowed on the reservation.

The Cattail Course opened in the fall of 2002 and complements the Devil's Claw but lends a whole new flavor to championship golf
at Whirlwind. While the Devil's Claw features high mounding and significant fairways elevation changes, its sister course, the
Cattail derives its design challenges in the opposite direction, as deep canyons and pristine lakes dictate the design. This course will
host the Nationwide Gila River Classic, a PGA Tour Event in the years 2003 and 2004.

orchards and, as its name suggests, sheep pastures (carneros is the Spanish word for ram). The winery blossomed from Francis
Mahoney's desire to grow and produce Pinot Noir which would evoke in him the same passion he felt when visiting Burgundy,
France and enjoying that appellation's wines. Francis recognized that by vinifying the Pinot Noir clones in separate small lots and
then blending these clonal selections in different ways, he could create several styles of Pinot Noir all of which were stylistically
unique representatives of the varietal. The combination of the most modern technology and viticultural research along with a
reverence for Old World methods, insures the success of Carneros Creek as a leading producer of New World Pinot Noir.

Enjoy a tour and tasting for (8) including a gift bag filled with estate-grown lavender products. Elegance, complexity, balance and
consistency are words used to describe the wines of Matanzas Creek Winery. This is a reflection on holding quality as its first
concern as the winery quickly established its reputation producing Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. Later, the rare
Journey bottlings added to Matanzas Creek's mystique. The original winery, a converted dairy barn, gave way in 1985 to a modern,
state-of-the-art winemaking facility and, over the years, the estate vineyards have doubled in size. Plantings of Syrah were added
and first wines released with the 1994 vintage. Gently sloping pastureland was sculpted into the winery's famed gardens and
lavender field.

For history, one would be hard pressed to compete with the five million year old Grand Canyon. Each train engine, both steam and
diesel, and each train car, from Coach to First Class, has been painstakingly restored to its original state by a staff of mechanics who
see their work as more a labor of love than a job. On the train, your crew is no less enthusiastic. Each is bursting with local and
Grand Canyon folklore and history, as well as Grand Canyon Railway knowledge. Strolling musicians catch you up with what was
hot way back when. And there's even fun recreations of an old fashioned shoot out and a train robbery. The Grand Canyon - the
most magnificent of the seven natural wonders. An inexplicable urge to get acquainted with Mother Nature's crown jewel. A
lifelong desire to come face to face with the world's deepest chasm. Of all that may pull you to the Grand Canyon, nothing is more
powerful than Grand Canyon Railway's fleet of vintage locomotives.

ranch of Perkinsville and back into Arizona's other grand canyon is an unforgettable experience. Home to America's national
symbol, the majestic bald eagle, Verde Canyon is accessible only by rail. The historic route is nestled between two national forests
and adjacent to a designated wilderness area. This unique geological wonderland features rugged, high desert rock faces and
spectacular panoramic views. This distinctive confluence of desert and wetland is populated by a variety of wildlife, which thrives
among the indigenous trees, shrubs, cactuses and wildflowers.

Passengers on this popular excursion train are enthralled as the eagle-decorated vintage engines roll past towering, crimson cliffs,
near ancient Indian ruins, over old-fashioned trestles and through a 680-foot manmade tunnel on a four-hour round trip to deserted
Perkinsville Ranch and back. Expert narration and guides leave passengers with a sense of history, archaeology, geology, wildlife
and the Indian lore of the Verde Canyon. Original music also is an integral part of the excursion that takes passengers through
