It is practically insoluble; the heavy metal oxides are firmly incorporated into the spinel lattice whereby they loose their chemical, physical and physiological properties. In animal studies, Sicopal® Green K 9710 did not display acute toxicity. No acute irritant effect was shown in tests to determine the acute irritation of skin and mucous membranes. Due to its insolubility it can be considered non-bioavailable. Soluble cobalt compounds as well as cobalt metal may have a sensitizing effect. However, none have been reported during our experience of many years of handling cobalt green pigments. Since Sicopal® Green K 9710 is practically insoluble in water, it does not pose a hazard for the environment. On controled dumpsites, no dissolved heavy metals are released into the seepage water. During incineration of articles colored with it, Sicopal® Green K 9710 is recovered in its original form in the residual ash. Heavy metal contents

No lead, cadmium, hexavalent chromium or mercury have intentionally been added to Sicopal® Green K 9710. Analyses of representative standard samples have shown that the sum of the total content of these elements is less than 100 mg/kg and thus below the limit laid down in the EU Directive on packaging and packaging waste, 94/62/EC, and the American CONEG model. The requirements of the EU Directive on electronic devices, 2002/95/EC, and the EU Directive on end-of-live vehicles, 2000/53/EC, are met. On average, Sicopal® Green K 9710 contains 12–13 % of cobalt, 23– 24 % of nickel and 13–14 % of zinc. Sicopal® Green K 9710 does not fall under the provisions of the Agreement on Chemical Weapons and does not contain any substances that are mentioned in the German Ordinance on the Prohibition of Certain Chemicals (ChemVerbotsV). It is produced without using substances that destroy ozone (Montreal Protocol on Ozone Depleting Substances).
