Sicomin Red L 3125
CAS number EINECS number Index number, nomenclature Colour Index Chemical nature 12656-85-8 235-759-9 082-010-00-5, lead chromate molybdate sulfate red Pigment Red 104 / 77 605 Sicomin® Red L 3125 consists of mixed crystals consisting of lead chromate, lead sulfate and lead molybdate. Its general formula is Pb(Cr,S,Mo)O4. It is not a mixture of lead chromate molybdate and lead sulfate and is, for stabilization purposes, coated with silicate and antimony compounds. Due to its LD50 value of > 5000 mg/kg, Sicomin® Red L 3125 is not considered acutely toxic. Tests to determine the acute irritation of skin and mucous membranes have not revealed an irritant effect. It is partly soluble in gastric acid in which case lead fraction may accumulate in the body. Long-term ingestion may, among other effects, inhibit the hemoglobin biosynthesis. In studies on embryo toxicity, high lead exposure showed positive results (RE, harmful to development, category 1). Very high exposure to lead (lead levels in blood > 500 µg/liter) may possibly influence the reproductive capacity (RF, harmful to fertility, category 3). In experiments on animals, lead chromate had no carcinogenic effect. Nevertheless, the EU has classified lead chromates as carcinogenic substances of category 3 owing to their chromate content. Sicomin® Red L 3125 is hardly soluble in water. It can be removed from effluents by mechanical means. Heavy metal fractions may be washed out in wastewater containing acids or alkalis; they must be removed by precipitation. Sicomin® Red L 3125 does not have an acute toxic effect on aquatic organisms. The classification “dangerous to the environment” is based on the group classification of lead compounds. No relevant amounts of dissolved heavy metals are released into the seepage water of controlled dump sites. When pigmented articles are incinerated, lead fractions are mobilized and released into the flue gas. Modern flue gas treatment facilities remove more than 99.5 % of the mobilized lead. Labeling

Labeling according to the German Ordinance on Dangerous Substances or corresponding EU directives: T N R 33 R 40 R 61 R 62 R 50/53 toxic dangerous for the environment danger of cumulative effects limited evidence of a carcinogenic effect may cause harm to the unborn child possible risk of impaired fertility very toxic to aquatic organisms, may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment “only for the professional user”

additional note

Paints with more than 0.15 % total lead content (DIN ISO 6503) must, in accordance with the EU Directive Classification, packaging and labelling of dangerous substances, be labeled “Contains lead. Not to be used for painting articles that may be chewed or sucked by children.”. Paints containing more than 0.5 % total lead must be labeled like the pure lead chromate pigments. Hazard classification In accordance with the regulations on the transport of dangerous goods, Sicomin® Red L 3125 with its acid-soluble lead content of > 5 % is classified as class 6.1, UN number 2291, packaging group III. Sicomin® Red L 3125 must not be sold to private end-users. Professional users must employ a person knowledgeable on the subject (Germany). Many countries impose restrictions on the employment of juveniles and females to handle materials that are carcinogenic or harmful to reproduction. National regulations must be observed. The acid-soluble lead contents listed in the table below were determined by the method described in DIN ISO 6713 (0.07 M HCl, 1 : 1,000 ratio), the total lead content was determined according to DIN ISO 6503. lead, total content lead, acid-soluble chromium, total content antimony, total content Halogen content TA-Luft MAK value TRK value 60 % 7.5 % 12 % 1.5 %
