The main aim of this report was to enhance Eagle’s current market position to competitive position.
As most of multi and local firms were trying to expand their business island wide once the civil war
came to end. I hoped that, that was right time to enhance Eagle’s position by this report.

However, Eagle was trying to capture the customers’ Purchasing Power as one of the Insurance
Company; hence, there were several firms in the financial sector were also trying to capture the
same customers’ Spending Power.

Therefore, corporate management should have clear understanding regard, where Eagle has to go
for, and with whom actually Eagle was competing with; then only you can draw the perfect
blueprint for our business.

Actually, Eagle’s competition not only with your competitive Insurance Companies, Mostly with

               Banks,
               Financial Companies,
               Leasing Companies, and
               Insurance Companies.


Therefore, this report was prepared to highlight the areas of which Eagle should adjust and make
investment in the form of money and effort in order to achieve competitive advantage not only
within Insurance market also in overall Financial Sector.

             1. New Customer Base through New Products and Services
In earlier days, the insurance products were seemed as core products to support to customers’ life
and premises. However in nowadays, the insurance products are become as by-products for
supporting to other core products. For an instance, in earlier days if a person bought a new car, then
who will be searching for appropriate insurance service provider to insure his or her property.

As financial sector triggered by aggressive competition, Eagle has the responsibility to expand
scope just from Insurance products.

This means that, Eagle has to modify your existing products and services and also Eagle should
focus on expanding product depth, as this helps to earn additional income and profit from both
existing and new products.

Suppose for example, if Eagle opened at least one branch in each district in Sri Lanka, Eagle has to
face single fixed cost for administrating such branches. However, our business performance will be
depends on staffs’ performance and staff and Management have to face high competition to
promote your brand among already insured customers. I think that, it will be very difficult to covert
other companies’ customers into our products as experience of High switching cost in this
insurance products. Because, if a customer had already taken a policy from other insurance
company, it will be impossible to convert him.

However, it is very easy to capture other companies’ customers through Eagle’s attractive and
alternative product package, promotional strategies, pricing and proper planning and son on.

Meanwhile, if Eagle wants to expand and to achieve the competitive advantage, Eagle has to
liberalize or decentralize our products.

For an example, the following are the most basic competition pattern in the real practise for Eagle
Insurance

  i.   Competition consisting only of those companies offering a similar product or service to the
       target market, utilizing a similar technology, and exhibiting similar degree of vertical
       integration
               E.g. Eagle with Janashakthi
 ii.   Competition consisting of all companies operating in the same product or service category
               E.g. Ceylinco with HNB Assurance

 iii.      Competition consisting of all companies manufacturing or supplying products that deliver
           the same service
                  E.g. Loan mobilizer of a bank is a threaten to Eagle Insurance

                  E.g. Our Insurance has to compete with Banks, Leasing Companies, Finance Companies




I hope that you got my point now.

Sir, Eagle should not only focus on already existing insurance products, also Eagle has to focus on
other financial products. Because Eagle is going to focus more on middle-class families.

While we encounter with middle-class families, there both husband and wife will be working. They
may not be willing on future returns from their present investment from Insurance companies. At
the time, if leasing company attract them by present and visible assets (future return), their monthly
installment (monthly premium for Insurance companies and monthly saving for Banks) will be
forwarded to leasing company. At the time, the customer’s contribution over our products will be
reduced even though if Eagle have attractive product and promotional strategies, and again they
will search for a lest cost policy provider for their leased vehicle.

Therefore, it is better to invest on Leasing Business in order to reduce Eagle risk in the financial
industry sector and insurance market.



           Way of Doing Leasing:
There are two ways for doing this leasing business, those are

          Eagle may invest on Leasing Business similar to Insurance products (High Profit can retain,
           but High risk), or
          Can make any agreement with high scale leasing company in Sri Lanka to sell their
           products in Eagle’ branches (less commission can earn, but less risk).
          Will have the MOU with most famous vehicle assemblers and distributors for enhancing
           their sales via Eagle’s leasing while they are selling their products directly or indirectly to
           leasing (lending) customers (form their own outlets).

If Eagle starts the Leasing business, you can promote about all of your products by using our same
sales personal and advertisements. This helps to reduce the additional cost incurred for launching of
new products and therefore this also help to develop favorable image on your brand among
customers.

As I stated earlier, if Eagle start this new business, you can utilize your branches to manage and sell
these divers products. This means that, you can increase your profit through divers products within
the same fixed cost for administrating the district office.

       Necessity of Divers Product:
Presently, Eagle insurance trying to expand their market in Northern and Eastern Provinces and
other non-covered areas; anyhow, Eagle’s competitors also have the vision to expand their branches
in those areas and some of competitors have already done so.

Therefore, if you do not have this strengthen platform, it will be difficult to achieve the competitive
advantage even though if you have superior products and promotional strategies, attractive pricing
and high talented employees or sales persons.

Moreover, it is not necessary to invest huge capital on leasing business. Most properly, it may be
small amount. The Procedure -- -- The customer should book their desired vehicle at any of branch
by paying a first installment, then products can import from abroad or buy from respective
company in Sri Lank and deliver to the customer door within one week. Eagle Insurance can reduce
the risk and stocking cost that will involve in this leasing business.



    Any Company should have well defined differentiated products to attract

    more customers and standardized products to retain our existing
    customers.


Hence, we can utilize our district office as our showrooms. In the showrooms, we can sell not only
our both Leasing and Insurance products also other durable goods with installment bases in order to
reach more customers. In addition, through the customers’ information that was generated from
selling of other product in above process, we can send our sales persons to motivate or convert the
customer to Eagle Insurance’s polices.



    2. Gain Market Share through Diverse Insurance Products and Services
The Eagle insurance should have more diverse insurance products and services to meet the different
customers’ requirements.

Each company should has standardized and differentiate products in order to achieve the
competitive position. This means that, Eagle has to have well defined differentiated products to
attract more customers and standardized products to retain our existing customers.

As our nation composed mostly by middleclass families, we should have proper knowledge on their
actual financial situation and their lifestyle in order to develop appropriate products with
appropriate services; otherwise, our resources that were allocated for our operation would be
wasted as it was mostly focused on customers’ non-considering encounters.

Therefore, I recommend the following products features, services and sales promotion strategies.



               1. Eagle can introduce a family package to cover whole members in the family.
The Eagle can introduce a family package rather than introducing separate policies for Husband,
Wife and Children.

This package should cover whole members and offer whole benefits to the each family member. It
means, each family member should have the right to clime for his or her incidence, educational
needs, marriage need, and medical recovery or even for building a house as loan climes. Hence, we
can arrange any loan facility with any leasing company to facilitate the policyholder to purchase
their vehicle from certain company.

The premium can be determined by the number of source of income. If there are both husband and
wife have income source, then we can charge high premium or if there is a single source of income,
then we can charge low amount.

To promote this new products

      We can arrange trip to all Eagle insurance families within Sri Lanka or otherwise we send
       one or some lucky families to abroad.

longer able to provide due to death or injured or ill, comprehensive cover for the home and its
contents against natural disaster, fire and burglary, and Family Hospitalization expenses.

I have mentioned Family Plan as one of the Life Insurance product in the first strategy; however,
we may better to introduce divers and different type of life insurance products to attract more
customers from our competitive sector (Financial) and market (Insurance).

This means that, Eagle has to educate the customers for building the relationship with Eagle for
their Long-term and Short-term investments rather than going for Banks and Finance companies.

Therefore, we should have proper product features and attraction strategy for Parents, young
Couples (same as Yes account in People’s Bank, and 18+ in BoC), Private Sector Employees, and
self-employees . Meanwhile, we should have mostly short-term serving schemes rather than
introducing long-term scheme in order to attract more customers into our brand from banks and FC.

And also, Eagle has to have additional service features to attract the people, it may be arrangement
of Short-term loan for long-term policyholders, housing loan schemes and we can offer free house
or motorbike or car from lottery bases.

Likewise, Eagle can introduce Investment (regular or one-stop payment) savings schemes to attract
more potential customers from banks and financial companies sites. Where most of Muslims will
also be motivated to have the relationship with Eagle, rather than maintaining a bank account in any
of banks.



             3. Attracting More Customers through Promotional Tools


Now we are going to consider another most important factor for our gaining i.e. promotional Tools.
The promotional tool is the Must for business success whatever the products, personal or financial
backing the firm has.

Its means that, promotional tool seem as the backbone for the firm’s success, attracting and keeping
customers by saying the customers that, what the firm has and offer. We can simply say that,
promotional tool helps to communicate about our product and services.

Nowadays, most firms are made their huge investment on promotional tools to communicate with
the customers about their product and services.

existing brand. At the time, the investment made on such ads would be wasted.

Therefore, I would like to point-out some of most Customers’ attainable promotional activity that
will tiger the customers for switching to our brand.

I kindly recommend the following promotional strategies to handle while you entering into new
market. (Non-cover physical area)

    1. District-wise or Branch-wise sales inducements (sales promotional tools):

We may better to use the district-wise or branch-wise sales inducements strategies while we are
entering into new market rather than using the sales inducements at the national level.

Due to this, we can offer a motorbike once a fortnight for an Eagle Life’s policyholders based on
the lottery system. This will help to tiger the consumers to switch to our new band.

Suppose if we use any advertisement on TV, Newspapers or Radio regard with our new product or
new entrance, then customers will know that we are presented into their area; however if we use
this type of sale inducement strategy, this lead them to convert into our brand.

Just assume sir, you are in the middle-class family. Recently one of the insurance service provider
is entering with this strategy (i.e. offering a motorbike once a fortnight at the branch level), then
your preference would be changed on that newly entering firm. Likewise, whatever the strategies
we are talking that should be implemented at the branch level rather than implementing on national
level.

Meanwhile, during the months of between February to April we should use perfect and
predetermine marketing strategies and promotional strategies to capture whole vehicle insurance, as
most of people vehicle insurance period is limited between into this period.

Moreover, we should use branch-wise sales promotional strategies to capture business entities.
Suppose for example, if we provide a three-wheeler or motorbike once a month or once a fortnight,
this will lead to convert the business’ customers.

However, Eagle has to send our sale personals with appropriate information to each and every
business entity rather than investing on such ads.

Where, we can offer not only the motorbikes or cars; also arrange family trips or something like
innovative and most preferable (on customers’ aspects) inducements.

   2. The Creation of Customer Network Forum:
Generally, each insurance firm use their sales personals to visit customers door whenever it is
possible. Both husband and wife are working in most families; they will have weekends to pass
their leisure time. At the time, if we send our sales personals, definitely people feel inconvenience
on our products and brand even though we have marvelous products. So Eagle has to try differently
than compare with our competitors.

Yeah, Eagle has to induce a customer in a certain workplace through our sales person to introduce
new customers in a specific work place.

Suppose for example, if we have the scheme to offer a Gold Coin to those who are introducing just
new ten customers, this lead and tiger our existing customers to introduce new one. Again, newly
entered customer will search for another new customer. Ultimately, whole people in the specific
workplace would be our customers and they will search for new comers in their neighbor firms and
family.

This strategy is not practice in Sri Lanka here before, you are the first company is going to launch
this innovative strategy.




   3. Offer Visiting Cards to Whole Policyholders:
Another new strategy is to offer 100 or 150 visiting cards to each customers as free of charge.
Yeah, as you think this is the crazy issue. However, this will give us superior return.

Just assume that sir, you are acting as a teacher. During that time, your peer ask your mobile
number, you have to tell your 10 digit number and he/she should dial on his/ her mobile or write
down on piece of paper.

Suppose, Eagle offer you free visiting cards, you will be in the position to give that once (S)he
asked. Likewise, as an insurance company we can advertise our products behind the visiting cards
