Heriot-Watt’s Careers Advisory Service hosts an annual careers fair giving students the opportunity
to talk to representatives from a wide range of companies, professional organisations, voluntary
groups and educational establishments. The 2009 careers fair was attended by many actuarial firms
and financial institutions, including Deloitte, Ernst & Young, PricewaterhouseCoopers, J P Morgan
Chase, KPMG, and Standard Life. The Careers Service works closely with employers throughout the
year to provide you with the most up to date information on vacancies and selection procedures as
well as arranging ad hoc company recruitment presentations.

                                       Networking with Actuaries!

Heriot-Watt has its own very successful Student Actuarial Society (SAS) run by the students for the
students. The Society is very high profile and organises social and careers events for both
undergraduate and postgraduate students See: www.hwsas.org/

Our students are also entitled to become affiliated members of the Faculty of Actuaries Students’
Society (FASS) without needing to be full student members of the Faculty of Actuaries. FASS meets
several times each year for discussion of papers covering a variety of topical actuarial issues. They
also run a number of social events, such as wine-tasting, football tournaments and pub quizzes,
providing the opportunity to meet other actuarial trainees in Edinburgh. See:

Don’t Want to Commit to Full-Time Study?

You don’t have to! It is possible to take the Diploma on a part-time basis. Teaching is organised as
much as possible in a "blocked" system so that each Diploma module is presented over one or two days
only (the same each week). Part-time students may choose to spread their studies over a period of up
to four years. Any number of modules between one and seven may be taken in a year.

Part-time students can cover the modules required for subjects CT1 to CT8 in only two years (the
minimum period of part-time study), or can choose to spread their studies over a longer period if
desired. We recommend that international students should check visa requirements before applying
for part-time study.
