FACT SHEET Christian County Ground Water Superfund Site Christian County, Missouri September 2001 INFORMATION SESSION EPA will hold an information session on the Christian County Groundwater site. The session will be held: Wednesday, October 10, 2001 5:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. City Hall Council Chambers 715 West Mount Vernon Nixa, Missouri 65714 EPA will be available to answer questions, regarding construction of water main and related service connections to affected residents located near Nixa, Missouri. Belinda Young Environmental Protection Agency Office of External Programs 901 N. 5th Street Kansas City, Kansas 66101 Fax (913) 551-7066 young.belinda@epa.gov INTRODUCTION Drinking water wells at several residences located just south of the Nixa City limits have consistently shown elevated concentrations of the solvent trichloroethylene (TCE). Since 1992, EPA has provided whole-house filtration systems at homes where TCE has been found in well water. EPA is now in the process of designing and constructing a water main extension that will allow these residences to connect to the city water system, thereby, eliminating the need for the whole-house filtration systems. BACKGROUND The Christian County Groundwater Superfund site is in rural Christian County, Missouri, south of Nixa, Missouri. The Missouri Department of Health (MDOH) sampled private water wells in May 1990. MDOH found levels of trichloroethylene (TCE) above the safe drinking water standards in one private water well. Numerous drinking water well sampling events at residences located throughout the site area have occurred since 1990. Since 1992, only three drinking water wells have shown the presence of TCE above health-based levels. These three wells service four separate residences. EPA has provided carbon filtration systems to all four of these residences since 1992, providing safe, clean water to these residences. For a brief period of time in 1992, two additional water wells in the area showed the presence of TCE at trace levels. These two additional wells have not shown TCE contamination since 1992. EPA has determined that the best option for continuing the provision of clean water to affected residents in the area, is to connect these residences to the city water system. In order to do this, construction of approximately 1 mile of water main will need to occur, as well as installation of service lines and associated hardware to the individual residences. Design of the system is expected to be complete by fall 2001. Construction of the system is expected to occur either in late 2001 or in 2002.
