       Toyota Stadium
Kisho Kurokawa Architect and Associates
          Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan

                                              3

Designed next to the Toyota Bridge, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of municipalization
of the city of Toyota, Toyota Stadium was designed to be one of the 12 sites for the FIFA World
                            1
Cup held in Japan in 2002.
                                                                        4

                                                                                            5

Originally designed to hold 60,000 soccer fans, the stadium’s seating was reduced to 45,000 when
Japan decided to share tournament locations with Korea. Toyota was removed from the list of host
cities but continued with construction of the stadium.2
     6 7

                                 8

The stadium is designed with large overhangs to cover the seating areas on the sides of the stadium.
There are no columns supporting these large roof structures.3
                                                                                       9

The roof structures are suspended over head by four large masts. These large masts taper to the
                                                                                             4
point ninety three meters above the ground to support the trusses covering the seating areas.
                                                                                            11

In between these two suspended roof structures is another unique structure, a folding retractible

roof.

                                                                 13

                                  14

This roof is a fabric structure with individual, inflatable “bags”. These bags can be inflated individ-
ually to close the roof over the natural playing surface.6
                                                                                             17

   16

The overall design of the roofing system was a compromise to offer sunlight to the natural surface,
while providing shade to the spectators.7
                                                                         19

The retractable roof structure is reminicent of a japanese folding fan.8
                                             21

                                                                                         22

                        20
                                                                                          23

The main seating structure of the stadium was constructed of steel and precast fire proof concrete.9
                                        24 25

                                                27 26

This design dramatically reduced the weight of the overall structure, but great care and attention to
detail was needed because strong winds could have blown away the entire structure.10
