                                          The Cecil Rhodes Connection
                                                           James 4:4

“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity
with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”

The fact that Cecil Rhodes and Ghandi thought the embracement of John G. Lake’s teachings
to be wonderful should be an indication that this was neither good nor the true gospel. People
who reject the gospel of Jesus Christ will not evaluate its advancement in this manner. Cecil
Rhodes, of the Rhodes/Milner Roundtable, had an ambitious goal for the extension of British
dominion, control and increased wealth, not obedience to the Word of God.

In his "Confession of Faith", Cecil Rhodes defined the nature of the group he envisioned
would circumvent the current political system to carry out his dream, as described by Milner:

"Men of ability and enthusiasm who find no suitable way to serve their country under
the current political system; able youth recruited from the schools and universities; men
of wealth with no aim in life; younger sons with high thoughts and great aspirations but
without opportunity; rich men whose careers are blighted by some great disappointment.
All must be men of ability and character. . . Rhodes envisages a group of the ablest and
the best, bound together by common unselfish ideals of service to what seems to him
the greatest cause in the world. There is no mention of material rewards. This is to be a
kind of religious brotherhood like the Jesuits, 'a church for the extension of the
                     British Empire.'" 25

Cecil Rhodes was not only a British elitist, but a Freemason.

“A wealthy young man, Cecil Rhodes, like John Ruskin believed that only the British
elite could and should rule the world to the benefit and happiness of mankind. Shortly
after arriving at Oxford, Rhodes was initiated into Freemasonry at the Apollo University
lodge No. 357. On April 17, 1877, he was raised a Master Mason in the same lodge. Page 1 of 10

Rhodes also joined a Scottish Rite Lodge at Oxford called Prince Rose Croix Lodge No.

“Rhodes was, a critic of English Freemasonry - of its impotence and incompetence in
advancing British race interest. After being raised to Master Mason on April 17, 1877,
Rhodes drafted a program for world dominion by the British race patriots. To guarantee
the funding from his vast wealth of his world vision for the British empire, Rhodes
wrote in 1877 the first of seven wills that he composed over his lifetime. The first will
called for the formation of a "secret society" whose primary function would be focused
on returning England to her former glory. He viewed English Freemasonry and its
conspiracy as impotent and in effect defunct in this regard. Ironically, when the society
Rhodes had envisioned was finally organized after his death, its membership consisted
only of English Freemasons. "The Round Table," as it was known, soon became the
most powerful appendage of the British Brotherhood.” 26

The racism exhibited by Rhodes and many of his colleagues was an attitude “bred” into the
upper and middle-upper classes of Britain. They believed they were a ‘master race’ and other
races should accept and be glad of their leadership. In “The Fall of the British Empire,” a
book published in Britain, author Colin Cross explained these beliefs.

"... How far there was a racialist concept in the British Empire of 1918 is difficult to
define. In most British people of the time there lay a deep-rooted belief that they were
the best nationality in the world. It was held that particular mixture of English with
Scots, Welsh and Irish had produced a ' race' peculiarly suitable for administering the
affairs of others, less fortunate, peoples. It might be described as a ' master race'
concept, modified to a greater or lesser extent by a desire to be of service. " 27

"British racialism was not, strictly, a color racialism. The British believed they were
superior to other Europeans as well as to Asians and Africans. Kipling, possibly,
expressed the attitude when he wrote of ' the Gentiles' and of ' lesser breeds without the
law'. By ' Gentiles', presumably, he meant Europeans outside the British chosen race.
The ' lesser breeds' were the races actually subject to the British. There actually
flourished a religious sect, the British Israelites, which believed that the British were the
lost tribes of Israel and so called by God for high authority. Color racialism flow from
this emotional kind of attitude rather than from such attempts at a scientific definition as
was later to become characteristic of South Africa. As a working assumption, many
British people assumed that a man's worth was likely to be in proportion to the
                  whiteness of his skin..." 28

"Whether the Empire was supposed to exist just for the enrichment and glorification of
the British or whether it represented mainly a trusteeship on behalf of less fortunate
peoples was none too clear. The Prince of Wales, calling on his father, King George V,
to open the 1924 British Empire Exhibition at Wembley, said:' I hope, sir, that the result
of this exhibition will be to impress vividly upon all the peoples of your Empire the Page 2 of 10

advice that you have given them on more than one occasion, that they should be fully
awake to their responsibilities as heirs to so glorious a heritage; then they should in no
wise be slothful stewards, but that they should work unitedly and energetically to
develop the resources of the Empire for the benefit of the British race, for the benefit of
those of other races would have accepted our guardianship over their destinies, and for
the benefit of mankind generally. ' The Prince's order of priorities- first the ' British
race', second the subject races and third mankind generally- aroused no particular
comment. Indeed it was a platitude." 29

"The ' British race' consisted of English, Scots, and Welsh …To them were attached the
Irish as an influential but rebellious satellite. Except for the Irish, the British were an
unusually united people with much intermarriage between the different strains of
descent…An Englishman's social ' class' counted for much more than his regional origin
and the class system was a dynamic one with opportunities for rising from one class to
another. The two top classes, upper and upper- middle, formed a category...still in 1918
regarded as being especially capable of carrying responsibility... it was largely members
of the upper and upper-middle classes who administered the empire..." 30

"The unifying force between... classes was a group of about 150 boys' boarding
schools, known now as ' public schools'. They were the places where ' gentlemen' were
trained...They had developed a common form of organization, curriculum and attitude to
life...In 1918 only one-third of the Conservative Members of Parliament had received a
public-school education; by 1935 the proportion had reached two-thirds ... The public-
schools took boys at the age of 13 and kept them until 18, consciously attempting to
mould them to a standard model. The headmasters were mostly clerics of the Church of
England, although by 1918 laymen were getting more and more of the posts, and the
boys learned in the school chapel a creed commonly described as ' muscular
Christianity... Virtue, headmasters taught, was not to be acquired by passive
contemplation of the mysteries of eternity but by vigorous action in the physical world.
                  " 31

Carroll Quigley wrote of the influence that Cecil Rhodes and the Milner Round Table had on
        Lloyd George.

". . .one of the chief methods by which this Group works has been through
propaganda. It plotted the Jameson Raid of 1895; it caused the Boer War of
1899-1902; it set and controls the Rhodes Trust; it created the Union of South
Africa in 1906-1910; it established the South African periodical The State in
1908; it founded the British Empire periodical The Round Table in 1910, and
this remains the mouthpiece of the Group; it has been the most powerful single
influence in All Souls, Ballios, and New Colleges at Oxford for more than a
generation; it has controlled The Times for more than fifty years. . .it publicized
the idea of and the name 'British Commonwealth of Nations' in the period 1908-
1918; it was the chief influence in Lloyd George's war administration in Page 3 of 10

1917-1919 and dominated the British delegation to the Peace Conference of
1919; it had a great deal to do with the League of Nations and of the system of
mandates; it founded the Royal Institute of International Affairs in 1919 and still
controls it; it was one of the chief influences on British policy toward Ireland,
Palestine, and India in the period 1917-1945; it was a very important influence on
the policy of appeasement of Germany during the years 1920-40; and it controlled
and still controls, to a very considerable extent, the sources and the writing of the
history of British and Imperial and foreign policy since the Boer War." 32

In The Anglo-American Establishment, Carroll Quigley credited the Cecil Bloc with use of
power and wealth for expansion of the British Empire, and related the control it exerted in
South Africa and in various other issues.

"'The Toynbee group' was a group of political intellectuals. . .dominated by Arnold
Toynbee and Milner himself. . .The Cecil Bloc was a nexus of political and social power
formed by Lord Salisbury and extending from the great sphere of politics into the fields
of education and publicity. . .The 'Rhodes secret society' was a group of imperial
federalists, formed in the period after 1889 and using the economic resources of South
Africa to extend and perpetuate the British Empire. It is doubtful if Milner could have
formed his group without assistance from all three of these sources. . .

"One of the enduring creations of the Cecil Bloc is the Society for Psychical Research,
which holds a position in the history of the Cecil Bloc similar to that held by the Royal
Institute of International Affairs in the Milner Group. The Society was founded in 1882
by the Balfour family and their in-laws, Lord Rayleigh and Professor Sidgwick. In the
twentieth century it was dominated by those members of the Cecil Bloc who became
most readily members of the Milner Group." 33

“The Cecil Bloc became an increasingly powerful political force and among them, Sir
Edward Grey and Haldane, who were Fabian Coefficients, also "were strong imperialists
. . . supported the Boer War, grew increasingly anti-German, supported the World War
in 1914 and were close to the Milner Group politically, intellectually and socially." 34

Author David Lamb recounted in The Africans, the tragedy and oppression of Africa and
validates the instigation of the Boer wars. The Afrikaners were originally Dutch, French and
German pioneers, who spoke a Dutch –based language and who first immigrated to Cape
Town. They followed a fundamentalist form of Calvinism, were fiercely nationalistic and not
only confronted the British, but the black Africans and any else that stood in the way of their
        quest for land and peace.

“Britain seized the cape in1795…the Afrikaner was denied land rights and fined
for such offences as allowing his cattle to stray. He was excluded from jury duty
because of his language and forced to accept English-speaking ministers for his
churches…The British returned the cape to the Dutch in 1803, then took it back Page 4 of 10
The Cecil Rhodes Connection 7/29/08 5:47 PM

again in 1806 because of the need to protect their sea routes to India during the
Napoleonic Wars. The Dutch settlers, who called themselves Boers (farmers), felt
threatened. And in 1835, rifle and Bible in hand, they began moving north in small
groups to escape the British and to secure land of their own…Over the next eight
years [Boers]…headed…for the high veld of Natal and Transvaal provinces, firmly
convinced that God had chosen them to implant a new nation in Africa…’ 35

The Boer trek was reportedly perilous, bloody and fraught with misplaced beliefs about the
Boer and British “right” to take and control Africa.

“…In the bloodiest battle of the trek, 12,000 Zulu warriors attacked…The 500 Boers…
annihilated them, and keeping the vow they had made to God…built a church to
commemorate the victory. The day of that victory, December 16, is celebrated today as
a national holiday, the Day of the Covenant, and the Ncome in Natal province is now
known as Blood River. (The Zulus remained a formidable force…until 1879, when the
British destroyed them militarily and occupied Zululand.) “

“ In the early 1850’s the Boers established two independent republics, one known as
the South African Republic in the Transvaal, the other as the Orange Free State.
They made alliances with the local chiefdoms…Britain was uneasy with this
maverick white tribe and it annexed both the Transvaal and Natal. In 1886 one of
the richest gold deposits was found in the Witwatersrand (the “Ridge of White
Waters”) region of the Transvaal, where Johannesburg is now located. English-
speaking immigrants and British investment poured into South Africa. Again the
Boers felt threatened. Only this time, instead of trekking north, they stood and
fought. It was Africa’s first war of independence and the only one that pitted whites
                against whites.”

“The two Anglo-Boer wars (1880-1881 and 1899-1902) were among the bloodiest
Africa has ever witnessed, and they divided the British population…Lord Herbert
Kitchener, the British commander in chief, responded with a scorched- earth policy…
destroying the farms of both the Afrikaners and the black Africans…Boer farmers were
put in concentration camps…In May 1902 the defeated Boers accepted the loss of their
independence and signed the peace of Vereeniging treaty. (later, in 1901, the former
Boer republics and the two British colonies, Natal and the Cape, were joined to form the
Union of South Africa, a dominion of the British Empire. The union became a
sovereign state with the empire in 1934. South Africa left the British Commonwealth in
                  1961 and became a republic.” 36

The Boer wars had caused the Afrikaners to become second-class citizens in “… what he had
considered his own country.” “…He took refuge in his church and secret societies such as the
Broederbond (literally, association of brothers) and he waited for the political power which
would enable him to build a nation, where everyone was of the same mind, the same color, the
        same faith.” 37 Page 5 of 10

In 1948, through Jan Smut’s United Party, the Boers saw their chance to gain control of South

“Believing that integration would lead to the ultimate destruction of the whites, the
Afrikaner government moved quickly to enact a web of racial laws and to
strengthen its system of self-preservation known as apartheid. It is worth noting …
apartheid did not create racial discrimination; it only institutionalized it. Back in
1909, for instance, the British withdrew the rights of nonwhites to sit in the South
                African parliament. …” 38.

“In Afrikaans, apartheid means “apartness” or “separateness”… According to the
doctrine, every race has a unique destiny and a unique cultural contribution to
make; therefore the races must be kept separate to develop along their own lines.
But however one rationalizes it, the real intent of the system is the retention of
baaskap (white supremacy). Apartheid still means racial purity, the subjugation of
the nonwhite majority for the benefit of the all-white minority. It is the instrument
that officially transformed the oppressed into the oppressor.”

“…the Afrikaner…dismisses the black as being incompetent, unmotivated and
inarticulate. “It’s the K factor,” he will say…meaning that blacks are inherently inferior.
The K stands for “kaffir” (the Kaffirs being one of the South African aboriginals), a
pejorative whose meaning and use is similar to the word “nigger.”” 39.

“The centerpiece of apartheid is the Land Resettlement Act of 1936, which…was the
result of international pressure on South Africa, exerted by the League of Nations in an
attempt to improve the blacks’ lot. The plan called for resettling of the blacks, who
comprise 67 percent of the population, into ten separate Bantustans, or “homelands”,
that represent 13.7 of the country’s total area—and hold almost none of its natural
wealth…BY 1982 four homelands, each representing a particular tribe, had been
declared independent states in Preotria…no government in the world other than South
                  Africa’s extends them diplomatic recognition.”

“South Africa claims that the Batustans are designed to give all peoples equal
opportunities, but the obvious purpose is simply to segregate the four main racial
groups—white, colored, Asian and Bantu—into separate national communities, thus
maintaining the whiteness of the Afrikaners without disturbing their access to cheap
                  labor…” 40

Just as the church was the path to education and jobs and was a matter of expediency for
some, so too Africa and the use of “Christianity” was a means to an end for power and wealth.
Dr. Livingstone echoed Cecil Rhodes in the expansion of the British Empire while speaking,
“…at Cambridge, England, in 1857…I go back to Africa to make an open path for
        commerce and Christianity.” ’ 41 Page 6 of 10
The Cecil Rhodes Connection 7/29/08 5:47 PM

That there was clear racism towards Africans was evidenced by such attitudes as Dr Albert
Schweitzer, a French Protestant and Nobel Peace Prize winner, who wrote in 1921 of his views
of Negroes in Africa. “The Negro is a child…and with children nothing can be done without
        the use of authority…” 42

Segregation and racism in churches in Africa was common in colonial days and is found still

“The church did not play a role in supporting the Africans’ struggle for
independence, largely because white clergy in Africa were racist in attitude and
approach…The church has also failed to follow its own doctrine in South Africa,
where many of the Ten Commandments are ignored as part of national policy.” 43

“No group nurtured this confusion and uncertainty than the white missionaries. They
came to Africa as the soldiers of the Holy Gospel, bringing Christianity and culture to a
pagan people, and the revolutionary doctrine they preached ultimately changed the
character of the entire continent. The message of the missionaries who arrived by the
handful in the mid-1800’s and by the thousands a few decades later was that the
European and his ways were superior to anything the empty heritage of Africa had to
offer. Civilization, they contended, was possible only through assimilation.” 44

“…today, despite great obstacles erected by repressive presidents and Marxist
governments, the Christian church is probably the most powerful institution that is
influenced by the West but is, at its core, indigenous. Almost every president in Africa
is the product of a missionary education, and many remain closely associated with the
                  church…” 45.

As stated previously, Christianity isn’t necessarily the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Knowing that
the Charismatic movement was merely a vehicle to have people from all denominations
become accustomed to Pentecostal manifestations, gives us a view of what the goal really is.
        [See: Shepherds in Disguise]

Many, who might not willingly accept any manifestations, are seduced into accepting the less
offensive and “more conservative” Pentecostal stream as the alternative to the full-fledged
manifestations in the Charismatic movement. Many so-called discernment ministries, many of
which are Pentecostal with full acceptance of tongues and other manifestations, declare the
evils of the Charismatic movement while quietly pushing the “conservative” manifestations.

The promotion of Pentecostal and Charismatic theology is merely a matter of expansion of
mysticism with the same manifestations found in witchcraft, voodoo and sorcery. This is not
said lightly or with intent to put down those who have followed leadership into those
teachings. These facts are discussed in the articles in this series. The truth is, a heart that
earnestly seeks Jesus Christ will be delivered from deception. God promises that the Holy
Spirit will lead us into all truth. Page 7 of 10

                1 John 2:26-27

“These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. But the
anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any
man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth,
and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.”

Jesus said a wicked generation seeks a sign, in Matthew 12:39-40. We are reminded that
we, as believers, need no manifestations, signs or wonders in order to live for our Lord
Jesus Christ and believe all that the Word of God has to say.

                Romans 1: 17

"For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is
written, The just shall live by faith."

2 Corinthians 5:7 "(For we walk by faith, not by sight.)"
