Introduction
Citrix® XenServer® is server virtualization that makes datacenters more agile and efficient through faster
application delivery, higher levels of availability and improved utilization of IT resources. It’s an enterprise-
ready virtualization platform that contains all the capabilities required to create and manage a virtual
infrastructure and deliver cost-effective server consolidation and business continuity. It reduces datacenter
costs by transforming static and complex datacenter environments into more dynamic, easy to manage
"delivery centers" by including features such as live migration, shared storage support, centralized multi-node
management and resource pooling.

Citrix XenServer is a complete, managed server virtualization platform built on the powerful Xen®
hypervisor. Xen technology is widely acknowledged as the fastest and most secure virtualization software
in the industry. XenServer is designed for efficient management of Windows® and Linux® virtual servers
and delivers cost-effective server consolidation and business continuity

Citrix XenCenter is the Windows-native graphical user interface for managing Citrix XenServer, there is no
Linux version. Full feature include: full virtual machine installation, configuration and lifecycle
management; Access to VM consoles: VNC for installation-time, Xvnc for graphical displays on Linux, and
Remote Desktop for Windows and many more.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server Edition: Lean, fast and powerful – Ubuntu Server delivers services reliably,
predictably and economically - and easily integrates with your existing infrastructure. It has almost 100
open-source and proprietary application providers certifying their programs on Ubuntu Server Edition.
Ubuntu 10.04 includes Alfresco, Ingres, IBM, VMware, Yahoo and Zimbra. It also includes improved
installation and management tools for Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC) and Amazon EC2.

Hands-on Labs Session
In this hands-on lab you will learn how to deploy Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx on Citrix XenServer using Citrix
XenCenter. You’ll learn how to prepare Ubuntu template which you then use to install & configure Ubuntu
10.04 Lucid Lynx virtual machine that you can use to deploy applications. You’ll also learn how to use
XenServer 5.6 OVF Appliance Wizards to archive your VM. Finally, you’ll learn how to create SAMBA on
another VM to store our distribution ISOs and how to add the share to XenServer using XenCenter. Upon
completion of this hands-on lab session you should have gained a competency and skills necessary to
install Citrix XenServer and Citrix XenCenter with multiple guest machines to build a complete network
infrastructure: DNS server, messaging server etc.

Assumption
Its assumed that you know how to install and configure Citrix XenServer and XenCenter. If not, then you
can check out our excellent hands-on lab manual entitled “Step-By-Step Build & Deploy Citrix XenServer
and XenCenter v1.2”

Part 1: Install Citrix Xen Server
1. It’s assumed that have already installed Citrix XenServer. You XenServer Configuration screen should
look like shown in Fig. 1.

2. It’s assumed that have already installed Citrix XenCenter manager. Your XenCenter manager screen
should look like shown in Fig. 2.

                                                                                                             3

1. Now connect and login into your respective XenServer and fully connected to the Host XenServer,
   should look like Fig. 3.

                                                                                                             4

2. You can now explore your XenCenter features. At the top you have toolbar with: Add New Server,
New Pool, New Storage, New VM, Shut Down and System Alert. You also have tabs, which we are
   going to explore

3. You’re done with this section.

Part 2: Install Linux Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx VM and XenServer Tools

Step 1: Deploy Ubuntu 1004 Lucid Lynx Template
By default Citrix XenServer does not include Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx Template, and therefore, before we
can install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, we need to download and install a suitable Template. This requires that the
XenServer and the guest network have access to the internet; this is required because this is actually a
network install and no CD ISO is required.

To install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS template, perform the following procedures:

                                                                                                             5
