Pitt Fabricates First Totally Integrated
A team of faculty and students, led by Marlin H.
Mickle, Nickolas A. DeCecco Professor, has designed
the first totally integrated Radio Frequency Identifica-
tion (RFID) tag to sell for literally pennies. The “Peni-
Tag” is destined to replace bar codes in commercial
applications in the future, making container orientation
and visual observation unnecessary. From the grocery
store, to the healthcare setting, to the European cur-
rency market, the possible applications are numerous.
Currently, commercial RFID tags require an antenna
and an electronic chip to be attached together as two separate components in order to produce a functional
tag. This fabrication of the antenna and the assembly of the chip and antenna have contributed to a cost-pro-
hibitive 30-50 cents per tag. Research in the School of Engineering, funded by the Pittsburgh Digital Green-
house, has been investigating design and fabrication of the antenna directly on the Complementary Metallic
Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) chip as a part of the existing CMOS electronics fabrication process. The energy
to operate the tag is provided by a Radio Frequency (RF) source from which the RF energy is converted to
direct current voltage (DC) on the chip in order to power the electronics. The tag responds by transmitting its
information to a receiver using an independent RF source on the chip at a frequency different from the energy
source. Though the antenna is 3.2 inches long, it is fabricated on a silicon chip in a spiral so tight that the
antenna fills a square measuring just 2.2 millimeters on each side. The one-step fabrication eliminates the cost
of a separate antenna and the manufacturing step of connecting the antenna to the chip. The
cost in large volumes: pennies.

                  L  istening as a tour guide confidently explained how one contractor with four trucks
                     poured 50,000 tons of cement to build a concrete bunker during the Cold War,
                         Richard Madden (EE ’56) knew the story couldn’t be true. The feat was impossible.
                  “I reasoned out in my mind that pouring that much concrete with just four trucks probably couldn’t be done
                  in the contractor’s lifetime,” he says, detailing how each truck would need to deliver 12,500 loads of cement.
                  “People say I have an engineering mind. I analyze everything. I try to put brackets around a problem, to see what
                  is possible. I think that’s what happens when you have an engineering background.”
                  Whether it’s his engineering mind or electrical engineering degree, the native Pittsburgher certainly figured out
                  how to put brackets around success after graduating from the University in 1956. Thanks to contacts he made dur-
                  ing his days at Pitt, Madden landed a job with Westinghouse in Pittsburgh after briefly working in upstate New York.
                  At a holiday get-together in Pittsburgh, Madden was reacquainted with a former classmate, Paul Lego (EE ’56, ’58),
                  who later became CEO of Westinghouse. Lego recommended that Madden interview at Westinghouse and, in
                  January of 1957, he was hired. While working in computer design and process control at Westinghouse, he met

Faculty and Parents Gather to Honor December Graduates

On December 9, 2001, Dean Gerald D. Holder welcomed over 230 faculty, par-
ents, and students gathered at the University Club on the Pitt campus to
recognize the December 2001 graduating engineering seniors. The event
began with brunch and was followed by a program that gave individual
recognition to each of the graduating seniors in attendance. The
keynote address was given by graduating senior, Nathan Mit-
terling, from the Department of Chemical and Petroleum
Engineering. Nominated by his peers for this honor, Mitterling
recalled memories of life as a University of Pittsburgh
student and reflected on the future as an alumnus.
