The average laser pointer ranges from 5mW to 100mW laser pointer options. Everyday lasers use about
5mW (milliwatts) and are safe for public use. However there are some precautions one should take before
using a laser of any kind.

Lasers are not seen from the side, but can sometimes be viewed from the side if the laser is very strong, the environment is very
dusty or dark. Otherwise, the laser will be visible only at the source and on a solid, hard surface that interrupts the laser?s path.

For this reason, lasers are generally used to draw attention to a board or screen during a presentation or demonstration. A low
powered laser is a very useful tool in pointing out hot spots or areas that a speaker would like to highlight during a presentation. It can
be helpful to the audience as they can follow along and quickly identify where the speaker is pointing to.

Presenters would have no need for something as powerful as a 100mW laser pointer so using an inexpensive, low grade red laser
would serve just fine during a demonstration.

College professors may use lasers during a lecture or class. However, students are generally prohibited from using lasers of any kind
in the classroom. While there are no laws against lasers, a university is well within its power to restrict the use of them on campus.

One of the major hazard concerns with small lasers and especially powerful lasers above the 100mW laser pointer range is the
potential damage to the retina in the eye. While permanent retina damage is not very likely, there are immediate side effects of having
been exposed to viewing the beam of a laser directly. One who has been exposed directly to the beam may experience temporary
flashes of lights, seeing spots, glare or blurred vision. The temporary side effects may last for several minutes, but should subside and
vision should return to normal. In very rare cases, some people have reported that these side effects can last several days.

Although the direct effect of a laser beam on the retina is not permanently disabling, the time when one is impaired by it can not only
be inconvenient but hazardous. If you are driving or operating machinery, you may be distracted or unable to see and have an
accident.

For these reasons, if you are going to purchase a laser pointer, and especially one as powerful as a 100mW laser pointer , then there
are a few simple safety guidelines you should take into consideration.

First of all, you should never look directly into the beam and likewise, you should never point a laser beam at another person or at the
general eye level of where a person might intercept the laser. Also, you should not point a laser directly into the eyes of an animal
such as a cat or dog.

Lasers will bounce off of reflective surfaces, so you should be careful not to shine your laser onto surfaces that might bounce the
beam onto an unintended surface or person.

Owning a laser can be useful and even fun for practical jokes and tricks, but you should take the responsibility seriously Whether you
buy a low beam laser of powerful 100mW laser pointer to enjoy, you should treat them equally as carefully as you wield them.
