Guidance on assessment and evidence requirements
This units aims to develop candidates’ knowledge and understanding of the nature of outdoor education, the activities it incorporates and the administration and operation of the outdoor recreation industry throughout the UK. This unit has links with Unit 6: Health and safety in sport. Tutors should underpin the theoretical sessions with a range of practical activities. For example, candidates could practically investigate the outdoor education industry by making regular site visits and engaging in outdoor activities. Centres could use the expertise of both national organisations (eg Plas y Brenin, Holmes Pierrepont) and local organisations (eg country parks). By participating in outdoor activities candidates could experience the potential benefits (Assessment Objective 3) first-hand. In addition, candidates could identify legislation and health and safety issues (Assessment Objective 4) and analyse operational issues (Assessment Objective 5) in a real setting. Outdoor activity/education managers could be interviewed in order to provide in-depth information about all of the key issues.
