Community News
A Clean Neighborhood Is An Asset On May 21, the LRV and Knettishall communities held their area clean-up. Eleven dumpsters were filled with residents’ bulk trash and trucked away to the landfill. It is difficult to name all the fifteen residents who volunteered to assist with this program. A round of applause goes out to these caring and dedicated helpers who spent Saturday morning running such a smooth operation. Please remember that clean and orderly properties are an asset to the community. If you missed this clean-up, keep reading the Crier for a possible repeat performance this fall.

Recipes To Share With Your Neighbors
Apricot and Peach Fried Pies “Apricot and peach fried pies have the best flavor of any fried pie I’ve ever eaten. My family loves these great pies. My grandmother made this up years ago. I have made this delicious fried pie for over 40 years. Shortening may be used in place of oil.” Original recipe yield: 18 servings. INGREDIENTS: -4 cups all-purpose flour -2 teaspoons salt -1 cup shortening -1 cup milk -8 ounces dried apricots -1 (6 ounce) package dried peaches -3/4 cup white sugar -2 cups vegetable oil for frying DIRECTIONS: 1. To Make Crust: In a large bowl, mix together flour and salt. Cut in shortening until mixture is crumbly. Mix in milk and stir until dough forms a ball. Roll out dough and cut into 18 6-inch circles. Set aside. 2. To Make Filling: In a large saucepan, combine apricots, peaches, and sugar. Add enough water to cover fruit. Cover pan and cook over low heat until fruit is falling apart. Remove lid and continue to cook until water is evaporated. 3. Place oil or shortening in small high-sided skillet. Place over medium heat. Spoon equal amounts of filling into each pastry circle and fold in half. Seal pastry with a fork dipped in cold water. 4. Fry a few pies at a time in hot oil, browning on both sides. Drain pies on paper towels.

The Kiwanis Corner
By: Sandy Benson, Public Relations Chair
May is one of our favorite months at the Kiwanis Club of Loch Raven. Not only do we have an opportunity to meet so many residents of the greater Loch Raven area at the Towsontown Spring Festival, but we also award college scholarships to ten exceptional students and honor three public servants for their service to our community. Our first meeting in May is always Scholarship Night, a highlight of the club’s year. For several weeks prior to this festive evening, applications for the scholarships are studied by the committee members. Financial need is only one criterion; academic achievement and community service tip the scales in favor of particular candidates. Among the college applicants, we are especially interested in supporting nursing students as our way of helping to alleviate the nursing shortage that hospitals face. This year we awarded $6500 in scholarships, three to college students for $1000 each and seven to high school students for $500 each. The recipients were Sam White and Kaitlin Pillion from Towson High, Nora Hickman, Alyssa Rosen, and Ashley Neal from Carver Center, Michelle Fowler and Dayna Cohen from Loch Raven High, Josette Hayes from Villa Julie College, Elizabeth Nimmich from Towson University, and Lauren Meekins from the Baltimore Community College at Essex. Congratulations to all our winners! A more recent May tradition for the Loch Raven Kiwanis Club is honoring a police officer, firefighter, and teacher-of-theyear. The recipients are chosen by their supervisors for their years of unselfish service to the people of this community. This year’s winners were Police Officer Sam Houston from Precinct Six/Towson, Fire Specialist Frank Rehr from the

Kiwanis Continued Hillendale Fire Station, and art teacher Stewart Emmerich from Pleasant Plains Elementary School. As club president Joe Maranto read the letters of nomination for each recipient, one could not help but be moved by the unflagging enthusiasm and dedication of these outstanding men. The greater Loch Raven community is a better place because of them. Anyone wishing to contact the Kiwanis Club of Loch Raven may call and leave a message at 410-252-9311, or write to us at PO Box 9838, Baltimore, MD 21284, or visit our website at http://www.lochravenkiwanis.org.

Loch Raven Village Golf
The 5th annual Loch Raven Village Golf Tournament was held Saturday, June 4th at Pine Ridge Golf Course. The golfers, many bringing friends and family, headed toward the links of Pine Ridge once again to take on one of Baltimore County’s favorite courses. There was a heavy downpour of rain the day prior to the tournament. Many of the players watched and listened for weather reports to see if the storms would continue into Saturday. However, for the 2nd year in a row Mother Nature answered our call. The day was cool and partly cloudy, but not a drop fell while the players were swinging away. Our winners for the contests are all going to enjoy gift certificates to any of the Baltimore Municipal Golf Pro Shops. Hole #5 was a long 567 yard par-5, that was chosen to be the Longest Drive hole. For Bob Bullock, it became a short par-5 as he out drove every other player. Hole #14 was a 169 yard, par-3, which was chosen for the Closest to the Pin award, which this year was won by Patrick Slaughter. The foursome who scored the lowest average as a team, are now Back-toBack Champions. The team of Richard Pragel, Walt Krysiak, Scott Tricket and Boon Yuth shot a two-under score of 70 for the round. Congratulations to all our winners and participants in this, our first LRV Golf Tournament of the year (read on for further details). mulligan (n.) When a player is allowed to reply any one shot (or in this circumstance an entire round). Having as much fun as I did, and getting a very appealing response from the players, the Loch Raven Village Board Members and I have decided to sponsor another tournament this year. Golf Continued Mount Pleasant Golf Course on Hillen Road. I was looking for something a bit different for this tournament. Rather than head to Pine Ridge, we’ll be traveling to our ‘backyard’ course at Mount Pleasant. For those who may or may not know, 4-time Masters Champion Arnold Palmer won the Eastern Open when it was played at Mount Pleasant in 1956. This edition of the Crier will be the last one before the tournament, so don’t wait on getting your foursome together. I look forward to seeing you all again in August. Evan Fishman
