Jeffrey M. DeFrain received a B.S. (1999) and M.S. (2001) in animal science from Kansas State University and then obtained a Ph.D. under Dr. Arnold Hippen at South Dakota State University. During his Ph.D. program, Jeff conducted a series of experiments to evaluate the effects of diets formulated to increase the supply of ketones or ketone precursors on the carbohydrate status of transition dairy cows. This research contributed to a better understanding of the interactions between diet formulation, rumen epithelial ketogenesis, glycemic status, and animal productivity of transition dairy cows. Jeff received his Ph.D. in animal science in December 2004, and is currently employed by Hubbard Dairy Services as a dairy technical consultant.

Kenneth Stalder is a native of Iowa. He received an Associate degree in farm operations and a B.S. in animal science from Iowa State in 1985 and 1987, respectively. Dr. Stalder worked as Livestock Production Specialist for a large cooperative in Northeast Iowa before embarking on his graduate degrees. He received his M.S. in agriculture at Western Kentucky in 1992. Dr. Stalder received his Ph.D. from Iowa State University in animal breeding and genetics in 1995. He served as Extension Swine Specialist at the University of Tennessee from 1995 to 2003. He joined the Department of Animal Science staff at Iowa State University in 2003 as Extension Swine Specialist. Dr. Stalder is married to Cheryl, and they have three children, Lauren, Sam, and Will.

2005 National Pork Board—Education Award Sponsor: National Pork Board
Dr. Jodi Sterle is an associate professor and Extension swine specialist, and as such, is responsible for swine education programs throughout Texas, from large operations in the Texas panhandle to the more than 26,000 youth involved in the show pig industry. Sterle’s program focuses on quality assurance and reproductive management. Sterle received a B.S. from Michigan State University and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Missouri. Sterle is one of four academic advisors for 750 undergraduates, teaches the honors section of Introductory Animal Science, and has developed a course embracing the history and heritage of livestock through various forms of art. Sterle also coaches the Meat Animal Evaluation team and advises the Saddle and Sirloin Club.

Nathaniel David Fastinger was raised on a 125sow farrow-to-finish swine farm in Northwest Ohio. He was active in 4-H and FFA, where he received his American Farmer Degree in 1993. Nathan graduated in 1997 with a B.S. degree in animal science from The Ohio State University. He then entered graduate school under the direction of Dr. Donald Mahan, focusing on nonruminant nutrition. Nathan earned an M.S. degree in 2000 and is in the final stages of his Ph.D. at Ohio State. His thesis research has focused on developing value-added distillers dried grains with solubles for use in nonruminant animal diets. Nathan’s career goal is to obtain an Assistant Professor position focusing on nonruminant nutrition. County 4-H and Farm Bureau Youth throughout high school. She earned a B.S. degree in animal sciences with a minor in agricultural business and applied economics from The Ohio State University. As an undergraduate, Jill did internships in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and with the Ohio Department of Health. Currently, she is completing a Master’s degree in reproductive physiology at West Virginia University. She recently reported that melengestrol acetate could be used as an alternative method to induce molting in laying hens. She plans to continue in the Ph.D. program in reproductive physiology at West Virginia University.

Second Place
Danyelle M. Dauch grew up working on her family’s hog farm near Bellevue in northwest Ohio. With interests in developing a career in either extension or swine production, Danyelle chose to major in animal sciences at The Ohio State University, where she received her B.S. degree in 2003. She is currently working on her Master’s degree in reproductive physiology at The Ohio State University under the guidance of Drs. Karol Fike and Michael Day. Her thesis work focuses on the effects of divergent selection for insulin-like growth factor-I on endocrine function in beef heifers. After graduation, Danyelle will pursue a career focused on either teaching or extension with the aim of promoting agriculture in Ohio.
