SEC. lll. DEFERRAL OF LOAN REPAYMENT FOLLOWING ACTIVE DUTY.
Part G of title IV of the Higher Education Act of
4 1965 is amended by inserting after section 484B (20 5 U.S.C. 1091b) the following new section: 6 7 8
‘‘SEC. 484C. DEFERRAL OF LOAN REPAYMENT FOLLOWING ACTIVE DUTY.
‘‘(a) DEFERRAL

LOAN REPAYMENT FOLLOWING
9 ACTIVE DUTY.—In addition to any deferral of repayment 10 of a loan made under this title pursuant to section 11 428(b)(1)(M)(iii), 455(f)(2)(C), or 464(c)(2)(A)(ii), a bor12 rower of a loan under this title who is a member of the 13 National Guard or other reserve component of the Armed 14 Forces of the United States, or a member of such Armed 15 Forces in a retired status, and is called or ordered to ac16 tive duty shall be eligible for a deferment during the 13 17 months following the conclusion of such service, except

2 1 that a deferment under this subsection shall expire upon 2 the borrower’s return to enrolled student status. 3 ‘‘(b) ACTIVE DUTY.—Notwithstanding section
4 481(d), in this section, the term ‘active duty’ has the 5 meaning given such term in section 101(d)(1) of title 10, 6 United States Code, except that such term— 7 8 9 10 ‘‘(1) does not include active duty for training or attendance at a service school; but ‘‘(2) includes, in the case of members of the National Guard, active State duty.’’.
