From The Assistant Principal - Mr. Paul Pistulka
“As this Lenten season comes closer, I pray that each of us can prepare better and make Lent the forefront of our lives. “ I have deliberated on what to write about this month. The obvious answer is Lent, but what could I write about that people have not already heard? As that thought was in my mind, I could not help but be side-tracked by my own selfish thoughts of “I wonder how the Packers will play this weekend?” or “when (if) they make it to the Super Bowl, where will I watch the game?” Then I realized I should think about Lent this way. Many times in our world today we put so much time and effort into events that, in the long run, really give us no benefit other than instant gratification. Examples would be birthday parties, vacations, weekend plans, etc. All of those occasions are great and need to be planned for, but when it comes to the season of Lent, we often let it sneak up on us. Before we know it, we are thinking of the easiest thing we can do or give up for God. I am glad I had to write this because as early as Lent is this year, I know it would have happened to me. As we come into the month of February, on the brink of the Lenten season, let us take some time with our families to prepare for the season. Find time to talk to your family or reflect on your own about “what the Lord thinks needs to be changed in your life.” Then, take time to listen. Maybe God is asking you to be more reflective during Lent and to be more aware of your behaviors and desires. Maybe God is asking for more time for prayer in your life, or to fast during every Friday during Lent, not just Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Maybe God is asking for your gift of generosity to the poor. Is this an opportunity for you to write the check for a needy cause first before your own wants are satisfied? Maybe God is asking for you to practice penance to help heal your heart. Anyone can stop a behavior for a while, but without practicing penance and without asking “what's missing for me, that I need to fill it with this desire?” one will struggle to succeed in the change of heart that must occur to really change a behavior. Lent is indeed how God draws us home, as individuals. But, it is also a very communal journey. We never journey alone; no matter how "lonely" we may feel. We are always journeying together. Share your sacrifice with someone who is a close friend, or spouse, or family member. This allows us to enjoy and share the support and environment that allows grace to flourish. As this Lenten season comes closer, I pray that each of us can prepare better and make Lent the forefront of our lives. Ask God to help us prepare for and think about Lent as much as we do for those other trivial things in our lives. Whatever it is that you come up with after you take the time to listen, may God bless you in that endeavor. Let us pray for each other on this journey, especially those who need and desire a change of heart on this pilgrimage to Easter joy. Paul Pistulka, Assistant Principal

Ben Kotopka Receives AP Honors And Scholarship
After being named as a College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar with Honor last fall, Pius X High School student Ben Kotopka was named as Nebraska’s 2007-08 male state winner of the Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement. With this award he will receive a $2,000 college scholarship from the Siemens Foundation. Kotopka was selected for this award based on his exceptional performance in AP math and science. He is the son of Dr. Mike and Ann Kotopka and is currently a junior at Pius X. In addition to this award, Ben recently received a perfect score on the ACT college entrance examination. For the second year in a row he also placed in the top 50 among more than 1,400 of his peers at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Math Day competition, where he was awarded fourth place overall earning a scholarship to UNL. The Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement began in 1998 to support math and science education while expanding the pool of technology talent needed for continued growth of business and industry in the United States. The awards are given to students from each of the 50 states (potentially one male and one female) who have earned the greatest number of scores of five in nine determined AP courses. The Siemens Foundation, in partnership with the College Board, awards over $300,000 each year to AP students, teachers and schools. Two national winners, one male and one female from the state winners, will be awarded a $5,000 college scholarship. The winners of the 2007-08 Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement will be listed in a full-page advertisement in the USA Today and on the Siemens Foundation website at www.siemens-foundation.org in late February 2008.

Brandon Schlautman Named Coca-Cola SemiFinalist
Brandon Schlautman has been selected as a semifinalist in the 20th anniversary class of the Coca-Cola Scholars Program. With the 2008 class, more than 4,000 young scholars nationwide will have benefited from just over $35 million that the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation has provided. The program recognizes a diverse group of extraordinary high school seniors who have demonstrated academic and civic excellence in their schools and communities. Brandon ranks with approximately 2,000 high school seniors who are in the running for $3 million in college scholarships that the CocaCola Scholars Foundation will award in spring 2008. Students are selected to advance to this next phase based on the level of academic excellence, leadership and achievement demonstrated in school and community activities. The Class of 2008 Coca-Cola Scholars will mark the 20th anniversary that the Foundation has awarded these scholarships. “The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation received more than 79,000 applications this year, and the semifinalists are truly some of the brightest students in the country,” said Mark Davis, President of the Foundation. “We’re delighted to have such a bright and talented pool of students to consider for our 20th anniversary class.” As semifinalists, students must submit additional information that will be reviewed in February 2008 by a committee comprised of 30 educators from high schools and universities throughout the United States. If advanced, Brandon will be among a total of 250 finalists who will travel to Atlanta April 24-27, 2008, to attend the Coca-Cola Scholars Weekend. During their visit they will attend a final interview process that will determine whether they are designated as either a National or Regional Scholar. The 50 National Scholars will each receive a $20,000 scholarship award, while the 200 Regional Scholars will receive a $10,000 scholarship. The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation was created in 1986 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Coca-Cola and to establish a legacy for the education of tomorrow’s leaders through college scholarships.

Youth Leadership Lincoln
Each year Pius X has a number of sophomores who apply for membership in Youth Leadership Lincoln. As part of their commitment, they meet once each month with teens from other schools and learn about leadership and civic issues in Lincoln, as well as collaborate on various service projects. This is a fantastic program and our students who have been accepted each year can sure be proud of this honor. This year Pius X is represented by Sean Flattery, Chad Gibney, Andrew Larsen, Victoria Tran and Aaron Wurster.
Speech Team
By Carroll Segrist, Assistant Coach Speech season is up and running, and students have been working hard in many events. At the recent Ashland-Greenwood Meet, several students placed in Finals. Liz Huzman placed 4th in Poetry; Diedre and Jessica Richard, affectionately known as the “Sisters Richard”, placed 4th in Duet. And Diedre Richard also placed 3rd in Interpretation of Humorous Prose. We have a young, growing team, and students Regina Merrill, Dominic Dongilli, and Liz Huzman have stepped up to do Extemporaneous. They are proving to be very capable competitors. In addition to Mr. Logsdon, the Head Coach, we also are very blessed to have competent and reliable help from Mr. Nolan Dewispelare, and from Dr. Karen Lee, from the Speech Communications Department at UN-L. We feel very grateful to have their generous and capable assistance. Coming up are a meet in Syracuse, and a lunch and movie outing as a team. “Restore All Things In Christ”. In the January parent newsletter, we reported that Pius X re- Academic All-State ceived a grant of $45,000 from The Dillon Foundation. The Tennis (Boys)- Garrett Sutton and Andy Rice mobile computer lab carts and laptop computers have arrived! The Science Department is the pilot for use of the mobile comHappenings At Pius X puter carts and laptops. Science teachers were trained on these * Photos courtesy of Yearbook * new labs in mid January and now will begin using these in the classrooms. The Development Office applied for this grant in the summer of 2007 and received the good news at Thanksgiving. Grant money received was used to purchase two mobile computer lab carts, 30 laptop computers, two access points and two printers for Pius X Science students. Currently, Pius X is fortunate to have two computer labs. However, these labs are heavily scheduled and are not always readily available to teachers. The new “classrooms on wheels” (COWS) will provide two additional, re-locatable, computer labs which provide more flexibility among faculty for periodic use by students. Each mobile cart houses 15 notebook computers and a printer. Also, each notebook computer is equipped with a wireless network interface card. Having access to 2 mobile computer labs, teachers will be able to instruct a class of 30 students without moving the class from the originating classroom to another computer lab. The new equipment was ordered on December 7, 2007, and was received the first part of January 2008. Adam Bauman, Pius’ Network Administrator and Technology Coordinator, has been instrumental in installing and training users on the new equipment. Pius X is very grateful to the Dillon Foundation for this extraordinary opportunity which will have an important long-term effect on our students! Band Department Christmas Concert

Rube Goldberg Machine Contest SMART Investment In The BOLT Lottery!
This year’s BOLT lottery is really going to be a SMART investment! That’s because the winner of the Grand Prize will get the keys to one of the most talked about vehicles to be sold in the United States -- the Smart Car. The sale of the Smart Car, which began in the U.S. in January, 2008, has created a buzz and a big demand. As a result, availability is limited. But Performance Auto Group’s Performance Chrysler Jeep Dodge Dealership in LaVista -- the only Nebraska dealer to sell Smart Cars -- has agreed to work with BOLT to make a Smart Car available. The Grand Prize winner of this year’s BOLT will be able to take ownership of the 2008 Smart Car For Two Pure. The Smart Car, a member of the Mercedes Car Group, a Damiler AG Company, gets outstanding gas mileage of 40 miles per gallon highway and 33 miles per gallon in city. Its nifty design and green attributes have made it an icon in Europe. Features and options of the models may be viewed at www.smartusa.com. The Grand Prize winner of this year’s BOLT can choose between the Smart Car and the traditional cash payout of $10,000. If the Grand Prize winner wishes to upgrade from the For Two Pure to a higher-priced model, he or she can do so through the dealer at his or her own expense. In addition to the Grand Prize, the BOLT lottery offers the second place winner $2,500; third place, $1,500; and fourth place, $1,000. All are awarded the night of BOLT, Saturday, April 26, 2008. Winners do not need to be present. This year, proceeds from BOLT will be used to retire the debt on the catering kitchen and to buy student lockers. To make BOLT a success, we need your help. Lottery tickets, which went on sale January 26, 2008, will be distributed to all Pius X students in mid-February. Tickets are sold for $100 each. If every student at Pius X sold one ticket, BOLT could raise $100,000!
On Wednesday, March 12, 2008, students in AP Physics and PACE will be participating in the 15th annual Pius X Rube Goldberg Machine Contest. Rube Goldberg was a Pulitzer Prize winner whose cartoons depicted complicated machines that performed simple tasks. In this spirit, teams of students are building machines that will, in at least 20 different steps, assemble a hamburger. The contest is a fun way for students to express their creativity as they attempt to solve a problem. The teams will be judged on their ingenuity and on whether their machine successfully completes the task. Everyone is invited to this year’s contest, which will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the new gym.
4th Annual Alumni Basketball Tournament
Mark your calendars to be a part of the Fourth Annual Thunderbolt Alumni Basketball Tournament, “March M ad ne s s - T hu nd er b o lt Style.” The tourney will be held Friday, March 14, 2008, and Saturday, March 15, 2008, in the Pius X gyms. Start forming your team now! Remember, classes can have more than one team and you need not have played basketball in high school to play in this tournament; you just need to be a Pius X graduate.
More information is available on the website http://www.piusx.net/alumnibasketball/AlumniBBHome.htm. If you would like to sell or purchase lottery tickets, you may call Deb Schulte at Pius X at 488-0931 or the Lottery Chairs, Paul and Michelle Hassler at 421-7670. To register to be a contact person (captain) for your graduation year, to be a part of the planning committee, or if you would like more information, please contact Greg Lesiak at alumnibasketball@piusx.net or at 402-488-0931. Please join us for the best year ever! The 2007 Alumni Basketball Tournament included over 240 players which made up 32 teams in 4 divisions. The winning teams included: Forycki Division- 2001A; Seib Division- 2000B; Anderson Division1980; and Kelley Division- 1975. Pictured above are the 2001A - Forycki Division Champs.
