Moxi Takes Top Honors Again at the 2006 AWC National

merican and Canadian Champion Brushwood Moxi of Endeavor won Best of Breed at the American Whippet Club’s National Specialty Show for the second time in three years, impressing breeder Judge Bo Bengtson with her smooth, curvy outline and flawless movement. “She is one of the best whippets I have ever seen anywhere, fully worthy of everything she has won and then some,’’ said Ojai, California-based Bengtson of Bohem Whippets and author of “The Whippet.” “She has a beautifully balanced outline with long sweeping curves, an easy, flowing, powerful stride, and was in excellent condition.’’ Co-owner Angie Diehl of Nysa Hill Whippets in Los Angeles said she believes Moxi not only shines from a conformation standpoint and moves like a dream, but her charisma and personality are the ‘x’ factors that win her many fans. “Out of the ring, Moxi loves to run day and night, and is a consistently playful dervish who can make anyone laugh at her very clever, but lovable, antics,’’ Diehl said. “Most of all, she’s appreciated for her wonderful spirit and temperament. We hope to nurture her remarkable qualities for generations to come.’’ The Best of Breed trophy isn’t new to the almost 4-year-old Moxi. Carolina. At the 2005 Specialty in Arizona, she went Best of Opposite under Judge Anne Rogers Clark. She also won the Top 20 competition in 2005. Moxi was sired by American Champion Rhode Paved with Gold, Register of Merit Excellent, and is out of Riverchase A Tempo.
She is owned by Diehl, Dennis Sumara of Brushwood Whippets in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and Linda Stewart of Endeavor Whippets of Atascadero, California. Moxi is handled by Mandy Clevenger, a protégé of show handler Mary Dukes of Delacreme Whippets.

Moxie Wins Again
Moxi was bred by Sumara, Stewart and Raymond Yurick of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Sumara and Stewart co-own Moxi’s mother, and Yurick handled Moxi to her Canadian wins and through her BOS win at the 2005 Specialty in Arizona. Moxi won the Whippet Club of Canada’s National Specialty in 2003 from the puppy class under Judge Joan Goldstein of Gold Dust Whippets. Moxi has gone Best in Show 28 times in Canada, and has multiple group wins and a Best in Show win to her credit in the U.S. as well. Born in California in August 2002, Moxi was the last of a litter of eight and showed her spunk from the start. “I didn’t think she was going to make it because she was upside down and breach,’’ Stewart said. “I had to revive her, but after the first day, she bounced back. That’s how she got her name, Moxi. She was a fighter right from the beginning. “I told a friend, ‘This one is a little ‘Mighty Mouse.’ I knew she was special as far as the attitude,’’ Stewart said. Sumara has said that it wasn’t until she was eight months old that they realized just how special Moxi was. That was when, according to Stewart, her clear flowing lines and effortless movement began to really show. Bengtson agreed with Sumara’s assessment in choosing Moxi over hundreds of other Whippets he judged throughout the week in Danvers, Massachusetts. “She … has a lovely head, a long gorgeous neck, the best front assembly possible with a clean, sloping shoulder and a long upper arm, beautiful bone and feet, an excellent topline and strong hindquarters,’’ Bengtson said. “I wouldn’t change her anywhere.’’ Moxi was bred last year to her father, whelping eight puppies in June. The two boys are already pointed in the show ring, one earning a major. Some of the girls are just starting in the show ring. As for Moxi, her owners say that for the immediate future, she will continue her show career as well.
