Board Meeting, October 23, 2006 The Johnston Community School District Board of Education met on October 23, 2006 in the boardroom at the Administrative Resource Center. President Chris Sonner called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. with Board members Ralph Young, Jill Morrill, Julie Summa, Alan Sprinkle, Dean Gillaspey, and Karen Coaldrake present. Also present were Superintendent Clay Guthmiller, Associate Superintendent of Human Services Dr. James Casey, Executive Director of Academic Services Dr. Bruce Amendt, Executive Director of Business Services Mark Klett, and Board Secretary Beverly Lyons. Hearing no objections, President Sonner declared the agenda approved. Terry Jacob, Suzie Pearson, Donald Henry, Sharon Zinselmeier, Don & Maribeth Miller, Lori McAllister, Deb Joens, Barb Allen, Marilyn Whitney, Anna Lampe, Eric Toot, Cathy Kerr, Cindy Judas, Tracey Orman, Ann Koopal, Chris Schmitt, Anne Elm, Ann & Bob Wiley, Gerrad Clausen, Tracy Smalley, Amy Tallman, Julie Williams, Vicki Selinger, Rod Roshek, Janet Classon, Lisa & Mark Cooper, Kersten Gebard, Georgette Longnecker, Michelle Idleman, Debbie Wych, Steve Halterman, Danelle Knopf, Nicole Nichols, Kaycee Schippers, and Vickie Cronin were present as guests. Commendations 1. Congratulations to Ann Wiley who received the 2006 Iowa Technology State Leadership Award (ITEC). An excerpt from the presentation of the award read as follows: “Her enthusiasm and passion for the integration of technology in classrooms is contagious! Ann Wiley is a true technology leader who excels in her position and is most deserving of the 2006 ITEC State Leadership Award." Congratulations to 8th graders Matt Gulleen (alto sax), Anna Wells (Bass Clarinet), Kara Huen (trumpet), Emily Linscheid (clarinet), Kevin Han (clarinet), Noah Reece (oboe), Stephanie Thimmesch (flute), Kyle Naig (percussion), Mike Shi (alto sax) and Rachel Swanson (oboe) on their selection to the South Central Iowa Bandmasters District Honor Band. Each of the approximately 70 schools in the south central Iowa band district may audition up to 10 students for this ensemble - Johnston is proud to have had all 10 of our students selected. The yearbook, the Dragon, earned third place in the state at the state journalism convention held recently. The book earned 19 individual awards. This is the fifth straight year a Johnston photographer has earned the honor. Two of the five photographers of the year are now professionals working in the field, one for the Associated Press. 2. 3. 1 Board Meeting, October 23, 2006 The following earned awards in the on-the-spot contests held on site at the convention: First place Susan Clausen, 2006 - news writing Abby Weaver, 2006 - digital photography Second place Larissa French, 2006 - news writing Third place Torey Robinson, 2006 - sports writing Consent Agenda Motion Gillaspey; second Sprinkle, to approve the consent agenda. Motion carried 7-0. Special Interest Committee Reports: Academic Affairs – Project Lead the Way at the High School; all-day versus half-day kindergarten; moving book from 7th grade to 9th Literacy Circle. Finance – enrollment and allowable growth data; financial indicators report. October 2, 2006 Certified Enrollment (Mark Klett) – students served increased 238 students; certified enrollment increased by 210.7 students. Action Motion Gillaspey; second Morrill, to approve At Risk Allowable Growth of $194,507. Motion carried 7-0. Motion Young; second Morrill, to approve the SBRC application for increased enrollment of $1,080,470 and ESL of $171,655. Motion carried 7-0. Motion Gillaspey; second Sprinkle, to approve the Resolution for Final Acceptance and Closing Final Project Costs for the Public Improvement Contract with Corell Contractor Inc. for the Transportation Parking Expansion; approve the Resolution for Final Acceptance and Closing Final Project Costs for the Public Improvement Contract with Poindexter Flooring for the carpet replacement at Beaver Creek; approve the Resolution for Final Acceptance and Closing Final Project Costs for the Public Improvement Contract with Des Moines Asphalt and Paving Company for the High School Parking expansion. Motion carried 7-0. Motion Gillaspey; second Morrill, to approve a change order for McAnnich Corporation, $16,310. Motion carried 7-0. Discussion Project Lead the Way Pre-engineering Proposal (Dr. Amendt) – information about a pre-engineering course. Elementary Boundaries (Superintendent Guthmiller)-members of audience present for comments on elementary boundary plans.
