November 2006 Greetings Friends: Thank you to those who participated in the September Wellness Event on Saturday, September 30th either by walking or pledging money. Six walkers participated in the Alzheimer’s Memory Walk, which was held at Marathon Park. We received pledges totaling $275.00 which will go toward researching a cure for this disease. Our Wellness Event for November will take place on Wednesday, November 8, 2006. Peggy Reno, a certified PACE instructor, will be leading a program on arthritis and movement at 4:30 in room 101. PACE stands for: People with Arthritis Can Exercise. Arthritis refers to the more than 100 different diseases that affect areas in or around joints. According to the Arthritis Foundation, in 2005 there were nearly 66 million adults (that’s almost 1 out of 3) affected to some degree by arthritis. Arthritis is the leading cause of disability for Americans under age 15. Peggy will provide instruction on range of motion, muscle strengthening, body mechanics and relaxation techniques. Common Types of Arthritis Osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease in which the cartilage that covers the ends of bones in the joint deteriorates, causing pain and loss of movement as bone begins to rub against bone. It is the most prevalent form of arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease in which the joint lining becomes inflamed as part of the body’s immune system activity. Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the most serious and disabling types, affecting mostly women. Gout, which affects mostly men. It is usually the result of a defect in body chemistry. This painful condition most often attacks small joints, especially the big toe. Fortunately, gout almost always can be completely controlled with medication and changes in diet. Juvenile arthritis, a general term for all types of arthritis that occur in children. Children may develop juvenile rheumatoid arthritis or childhood forms of lupus, or other types of arthritis. Systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus), a serious disorder that can inflame and damage joints and other connective tissues throughout the body. Fibromyalgia, in which widespread pain affects the muscles and attachments to the bone. It affects mostly women. Additional information about arthritis will be available at the Wellness Event, as well as on the Health Ministries bulletin board. I’ll see you on November 8 at 4:30! Please plan to stay for the Wednesday Night Live meal following the session for further discussion. Rebecca What’s New in Health Ministries?
