The annual shopping experience benefiting local wellness programs that get breast cancer survivors back in the swing of life! Dear Merchant: We are delighted to invite you to participate in the Fourth Annual Kansas City Back in the Swing Retail Therapy Event, October 11-October 15th, 2006. Created in 2003, this premier marketing promotion generates retail sales and serves as a fundraiser for The Breast Cancer Prevention Center and Cancer Action, two local non-profit organizations dedicated to the health and well-being of breast cancer survivors. Participating stores will benefit from over $375,000 of concentrated media exposure for 30 days, including TV, radio, print outdoor and web! Merchant participation has increased from 85 stores located in 3 shopping centers in 2004… to over 550 stores at 19 major shopping centers across the metropolitan area in 2005. Last year, Kansas City’s finest stores, in partnership with Back in the Swing, helped raise over $140,000, resulting in over 5600 Back in the Swing shoppers. This joint effort generated increased retail sales and new customers for participating merchants while raising much needed funds for survivors. Here’s a sampling of the 2005 Back in the Swing stores: Ann Taylor, Ann Taylor Loft, Anthropologie, Aveda, Betsey Johnson, Borders Books, BCBG Max Azria, Crabtree & Evelyn, Dean & Deluca, Discovery Channel Store, Eddie Bauer, Function Junction, Gap, Guess?, Halls ,Hallmark, Harold’s, Harry & David, J.Jill, Jos. A. Bank Clothier, Mark Shale, Nine West, Restoration Hardware, Scandia Down, Starbuck’s, Talbot’s, White House/Black Market, and ZGallerie. The Back in the Swing Retail Therapy Shopping Card formula is simple. Here’s how it works: • A card buyer purchases a Shopping Card for $25.00 from a friend, direct mail or a card-selling store. • Participating merchants offer up to 20% discount to card holders for the identified week. We are fortunate that so many retailers recognize the benefits of participating in this promotion and have requested to be included this year. We hope you will join the long list of Kansas City retailers who are united in an effort to help local breast cancer survivors. This is a wonderful way to be involved in National Breast Cancer Month and to demonstrate your company’s commitment to the local community and women’s health. Our name is our mission! Since 2000, thousands of fun-loving, caring Kansas Citians have helped breast cancer survivors and their families get back in the swing of life after treatment for breast cancer by participating in the annual shopping experience, Back in the Swing “Retail Therapy”. WHAT IS BACK IN THE SWING? Back in the Swing is an experiential fundraising event where participants purchase a $25 shopping card worth up to 20% in discounts at over 500 participating merchants in over 25 shopping centers throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area. Back in the Swing Retail Therapy is an experiential fundraising event that: Improves the health and well-being of participants through their three-fold experience of saving money while shopping, making a difference in others’ lives through philanthropy, and learning to appreciate the simple gifts of life; • Contributes to the community’s economic stability by encouraging participants to experience 5 days of shopping at local merchants; • Educates the community through the media about the agencies who can help breast cancer survivors and their families get back in the swing after treatment for breast cancer; • Supports "Back in the Swing" breast cancer survivorship programs, (including ground-breaking research studies on diet/exercise, one-of-a- kind group movement therapy for survivors, exercise programs geared to the needs of breast cancer survivors, massage therapy by trained providers in healing the side-effects of breast cancer, and therapeutic yoga for cancer survivors) through participants’ philanthropic donation of $140,000 (2005) and a goal of $400,000 (2006) • Gives every participant the opportunity to be an integral part of creating Back in the Swing breast cancer survivorship programs she needs for lifelong health and well being. • Back in the Swing Retail Therapy raises money and awareness for breast cancer survivorship education, wellness programs, and research initiatives benefiting those impacted by breast cancer to help them get back in the swing of life after diagnosis and treatment. Just as importantly, those who participate in Back in the Swing events enjoy the simple gifts of life—the joys, friendships, and hope—by participating in a shared activity that makes a healthier today and tomorrow. In giving to others, the giver is also the receiver! Back in the Swing is not only good for the shoppers and the beneficiaries; it also benefits the economic wellbeing of the community as it encourages retail therapy! Our Beneficiaries The beneficiary of Back in the Swing Retail Therapy 2003 and 2004 was Cancer Action, the only independent provider of compassionate, one-on-one supportive care survivorship education; and free direct services, such as nutritional supplements, wigs, and transportation serving the entire Metropolitan Kansas City Area. In 2005, Back in the Swing Retail Therapy supported Cancer Action and The Breast Cancer Prevention Center, offering prevention and risk assessment, along with clinically-based, individual wellness and lifestyle planning, regardless of economic need or geographic location of cancer patients in the Kansas City Metro Area. The two organizations collaborate with every hospital in the Greater Kansas City Metro Area to support the community as a partner in comprehensive care for cancer survivors. Nowhere in Kansas City is the transition from cancer patient to cancer survivor addressed in the form of providing a survivorship care plan in coordination with the medical treatment plan. Back in the Swing funds make it possible for this critical need in services for the health and wellbeing of survivors and their families to be a priority for the healthcare community and survivors themselves. In 2006, Back in the Swing is proud to announce an alliance with The Breast Cancer Prevention Center and the local medical community to create the region’s first Comprehensive Survivorship Center. The Center is a national model for understanding the patient’s point of view during her post-treatment experience, and addressing her physical, psychological, emotional, financial, and spiritual needs. What is the Goal of the Center’s Programs? Get back to work. Get back to play. Get back to well-being. Get comfortably, confidently, and consistently back in the swing of life!
