How to Send and Receive a Fax by Email How do you go about sending a fax by email? Is it possible to receive a fax by email? Let's try to answer both of these questions. Firstly, you will be aware that there are now online services which combine normal faxing with email, so that you don't need a fax machine, and can send and receive faxes by email even when you are away from the office, or away from home. The faxes are sent, or received, as email attachments. If you know how to send an attachment, or know how to open one, you can use a service like this. Sending a fax by email To send a fax, you sign up with an online service (we recommend one below) and then prepare the document you want to send. The document can be a Microsoft Word file, a PDF, a spreadsheet, an image file - most document formats are supported. Then, you send an email message (with the attachment) to the fax by email service. The address you send the message to will incorporate the recipient's fax number. The message (and its attachment) is sent off. It arrives in the recipient's fax machine as a normal paper fax. Receiving a fax by email To receive a fax, you sign up with a fax to email service, and choose the location for a toll-free or a local fax number. When someone faxes you using this number, the message is send to your email address, and you read the fax by opening the attachment. You just click on it to read it. There are several advantages in using an email fax system like this. You don't need a fax machine to send or receive messages. You messages can all be saved just like your other email. All incoming faxes can be automatically forwarded to other people, just like normal emails. Even if you already have a fax number, the number can be call-forwarded to the email system. The toll-free number system is available in the USA, Canada and most European countries. Messages are sent, and arrive, within five minutes. Best of all, you will never run out of toner! Many of the top services offer a free on-month trial, so you can test out the system and see how it works for you, with no risk at all.
