Dear Parents / Guardians
We hope that the June holiday break has been a restful and rejuvenating one for you
and your family. Term 3 promises to be a busy term with a host of exciting events.
Food and Fun Fair
The much awaited Food and Fun Fair will be taking place this Saturday, 1 July. As of 31
May, the total collection from coupon sales stands at $140 000. Our target is to raise
$200 000. We hope that you will render your support by turning up and spending
generously on 1 July. For safety reasons, the school will be out of bounds to all
vehicles on 1 July. Arrangements have been made for cars to be parked at Hwa
Chong Institution (High School). Parents who need to deliver bulky supplies may unload
at the auditorium lobby. Lessons on Friday, 30 June will be suspended for students to
set up the stalls. Monday, 3 July is Youth Day holiday. We hope the holiday will provide
the girls with the much-deserved rest after the busy weekend.
School Repair and Repainting
The school has commenced its Repair and Repainting (R & R) works at the start of the
mid-year holiday at the end of May. The R & R for the school and boarding school is
expected to be completed by the end of 2006. Some of the work will involve heavy
machinery at certain parts of the school. With the presence of external workers and
painting/repair work going on, students have been reminded to be mindful of safety
issues and of the need to keep their valuables with them.
MOE ExCEL Fest
The annual ExCEL Fest is organised by MOE for teachers to learn and share effective
and innovative teaching approaches. This year's theme is 'Touching Hearts, Engaging
Minds’. The date is 7 July 2006 (afternoon) with concurrent sessions at various venues.
School will end at 12.15pm on 7 July to allow all teachers to attend the concurrent
sessions.
Various programmes, including talks, classroom experience and exhibitions, have been
planned on Saturday, 8 July to cater to parents. A copy of the programme has been
given to all parents on 27 May. You may visit www.moe.gov.sg/excelfest/2006 for more
information. Registration closes on 5 July 2006.
Nanyang Family Concert
The Nanyang family of schools, together with our Alumni Association, has come together
to put up a concert, ‘Nanyang Glitters’ at the Esplanade Concert Hall on Saturday, 22
July 2006. Limited tickets ranging in prices from $15 to $100 are still available and will
be on sale on 1 July during the Fun Fair.
GCE ‘O’ Level Chinese and English Language Oral Examination
The Sec 4 Express students and the Sec 3 ‘O’ Level track students taking Higher
Chinese will sit for the ‘O’ Level Chinese Listening Comprehension Examination on
Monday, 17 July 2006 at 2.30pm. For this group of candidates, their Oral Chinese
1
Examination will be held from 29 June to 14 July. All Sec 4 ‘O’ Level track students will
be taking their Oral English Language Examination from 11 – 24 August.
Students who cannot be present for the oral examinations on the scheduled dates must
inform their respective subject teachers in advance for alternative arrangements to be
made.
Sabbaticals
Our first round of sabbaticals was held in Term 2 for all Sec 1 and 2 students as well as
IP students in Sec 3 and 4. The students enjoyed and learnt from the sabbaticals. The
second round of sabbaticals will be held from 24 to 28 July this term. Students will be
notified to make their options online.
Annual Cross Country
Our annual cross country will be held at 7.30am on Tuesday, 8 August 2006 at the
MacRitchie Reservoir Park in conjunction with our National Day celebrations.
The event is expected to end at 11am and students will be dismissed from MacRitchie
Reservoir.
Talk for Sec 2 Parents
There will be a briefing for parents of all Sec 2 students on Friday, 11 August at 6pm at
Siew May Auditorium. Topics covered will include Sec 3 subject options and
streaming criteria. It is extremely important that all parents attend the session. Please
return the duly completed reply slip to your child’s/ward’s form teacher by Friday, 7 July
2006.
Founders’ Day Celebration
We will be celebrating our 89th Founders’ Day on Tuesday, 15 August 2006. There will
be a dinner at our school premises. Tickets are priced at $20 for students and $35 for
adults. We hope that you will support the event. Tickets can be purchased from the
school’s Accounts Office with cash payment. The school will declare Wednesday, 16
August as a school holiday, our off day in lieu of Polling Day.
Community Involvement Project
All our Sec 1 students will be participating in a Walkathon on Saturday, 28 October in
support of the Concern and Care Society. Their main duty is to provide assistance to
the senior citizens during the event. Collection of donations for the walkathon cards is
optional. More details will be given at a later date.
We look forward to your continued support as we work together to provide an all-round
education for our girls.
Yours faithfully
Mdm Mak Lai Ying
