The GOE policy aims at securing comprehensive health care to all citizens to ensure a healthy psychological and physical environment that would enable them to work, produce and attain development goals and enjoy better standard of living. In this context and in conformity with the presidential platform, LE 2.7 billion has been invested in the health sector during FY 2006/2007, of which LE 1.3 billion were public investments and the rest has been undertaken by the private sector. from 840 to 920. • Increasing the number of beds by 15 thousands (from 170 thousands in FY 2005/2006 to 185 thousands in FY 2006/2007).

• Number of schools went up to 40.9 thousands in FY 2006/2007 compared with 39.9 thousands in FY 2005/2006. It should be stressed, however, that given the importance of eradicating illiteracy, there is a pressing need to effectuate the efforts of current programs targeting the reduction of illiteracy; as a result, GOE has succeeded in eradicating the illiteracy of about 500 thousand individuals during FY 2006/2007.

The developments that took place in the health sector have contributed to further health improvements as illustrated by the following indicators: • Decline in birth rate from 25.49 per thousand in FY 2005/2006 to 25.18 per thousand in FY 31

Focusing on the children who are suffering from cancer, the Children’s Cancer Hospital Egypt 57357 stands as a source of light and hope for the children and families. It provides services to children of Egypt, the Middle East and the entire world who struggle with that disease. • Increase in bed coefficient from one bed for 419 persons in FY 2005/2006 to one bed for 392.9 persons in FY 2006/2007. • Number of citizens for each doctor decreased to reach 443.3 person/doctor in FY 2006/2007, compared to 452 person/doctor in FY 2002/2003. • Decrease in the number of the population served by nursing staff from 356 person per nurse during FY 2005/2006 to 352.9 person per nurse during FY 2006/2007.
Recently, a formal letter was received by Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, president of the board of trustees of the foundation of the Children’s Cancer Hospital Egypt informing her that the executive board of the World Health Organization (WHO) awarded the Chil32

In 2007 Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak launched the national campaign to detect breast cancer; as such campaign included 8000 women with LE 20 million cost. The year 2007 has also witnessed the launch of a wide-scope campaign to create awareness on Hepatitis C virus to eliminate the spread of such virus on one hand, and activating preventive vaccination programs on the other. Within the framework of the State’s commitment to provide health services and medicine to all citizens, especially the unprivileged categories, the health sector has made major achievements in this respect, as the state works on ensuring that all citizens get equal access to the integrated health care services. To this end, the year 2007 witnessed the inauguration of an array of hospitals equipped with the most sophisticated technologies in the field.
