Time to start collecting things for our annual Peninsula Peddlers day! Sponsored by the Peninsula Area Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Emporium Antiques. We have lots of silk-screens ready for sale – for any donation – what do you have? While on your way to visit the gallery at PAA, stop by Countryside Farmers' Market in Peninsula - The market is open from 9am to noon every Saturday through October 7th. Local farmers, bakers, and artisans bring you wonderful crafts, and the freshest food possible. Located at Heritage Farms, 6050 Riverview Road in Peninsula (south of the Rt. 303 & Riverview Road intersection). Or, if you can’t wait till Saturday – Szalay’s is open! (pronounced zla's) a few miles south on Riverview Road. Have you always wished you could draw? Learn to draw and have fun doing it! Basic drawing: value study, shading, perspective: with pencil and charcoal. Students will work from still life arrangements, set up by the instructor. Work at your own level, with individual instruction. Photoshop Techniques with Jerry Jividen: July 15, 2006, 9:30 till 4pm Learn the secrets of working with Adobe Photoshop, any version or platform (pc or Mac). Jerry will take you through the steps of how to shoot, transfer, organize, Photoshop (used as a verb), and print your pictures. This first class is for those of you who do not know very much about this stuff but really want to learn! Bring your laptop were wireless! Oil Painting Basics with Diane Keske Talmadge: July 15 thru August 19, 2006. Saturdays, from 10 am till 1pm. Paint a still life in Oil! Learn to “See” differently and paint lights and darks to make your painting come to life. We will be learning color mixing from the color wheel, composition, and how much fun it is to work with oils on canvas! Knowledge of basic drawing helpful. Students will need to bring their own materials – please contact instructor for the list - 330-686-0095, dktalmadge@sbcglobal.net This 6-week workshop is $135 or $120 for PAA members. Painting on Watercolor Canvas with Mary Ann Boysen: She has been traveling in Europe teaching this method, and in Trinidad and South Africa – and at PAA on July 22 and 23, from 10-3 on Saturday and 1-5pm on Sunday. This workshop will introduce the student to the new watercolor canvas surface and demonstrate its amazing qualities. It’s a very forgiving surface and allows the student to change his/her mind mid-stream. Corrections are easy to make. It's a new and exciting surface for watercolorists, and the finished pieces need not be framed under glass. $130.00 or $120.00 for PAA members. Students will need to bring their own materials – ask for the list! Lauhala Bracelets with Jennie Hutchings: Saturday, August 5 2006. The program will run from 1 until 4pm. This workshop will teach you how to make traditional Hawaiian bracelets out of native materials, in a process similar to basketry. Students will use materials supplied by the instructor for this workshop. Teens welcome! Class size is minimum 5 to maximum 12 students. 1-day workshop is $40 or $35 for PAA members. New! Photoshop 7 - Using Computers to Create Great Works of Art with Jerry Jividen, August 19, 2006, from 9:30 am until 4:00 pm. This is the next session of a series of workshops held on Saturdays. Join us for Photoshop 6! See Jerry’s work at www.jjividen.com Considerable experience with Adobe Photoshop is required, any version or platform (pc or Mac). $60, or $40 for PAA members. This is an advanced, creative class. Bring your laptop – we’re wireless! Natural Dye Workshop with Cris Welch, Saturday, August 19 , 2006. from 10 am until 3 pm. We will explore the fascinating world of getting dyes from natural materials. Each person will end up with a rainbow of skeins. Come see how to get yellows, blues, reds, and more colors from ordinary plant – and, in one case, insect! sources. Students will need to bring rubber gloves, (heat-resistant, if you have them) plastic bags to carry home the wet, dyed skeins, scissors, a permanent marker, like a Sharpie, and a sack lunch. Also, well-rinsed milk jugs, in case you want to take home any leftover dye, to try on your own! We will supply wool yarn, and dye materials. This one-day workshop is $55 or $45 for PAA members Fiber Cafe’ meetings: The July meeting is a field-trip to Focus Fiber 2006. We will meet at the art academy at 11 Am Saturday, July 22 and take several cars to Artists rd Archives of the Western Reserve, 1834 East 123 St, Cleveland 44106. They open at 12PM and we should return around 3PM. There are 54 works by 34 artists from 7 Midwest states -all fiber arts- in this show. Carol is working on getting us a private tour. Peninsula Art Academy’s Fiber Café is pleased to announce its third annual Juried Fiber Arts Show to be held at the Peninsula Library from July 29 through August 26, 2006 . Artists are invited to enter their work in the show, open to all area fiber artists. Welcoming variety, there will be categories for both functional and nonfunctional works. Prizes will be awarded. There is a $25 entry fee for members ($30 for non-members) for up to three works per artist. Entry fees need to be received no later than July 26, 2006 to: Peninsula Art Academy; PO Box 171, Peninsula, OH 44264 Art works should be delivered to The Peninsula Library between the hours of 10 AM and 7 PM beginning July 19. For information and an Entry Form call: 330-657-2681. An open house reception will be held from 2-5 PM on Sat. July 29. Aug 26 - Sat - take down the art show - this is also the monthly weaving center meeting th th, Ongoing classes: Wheel Spinning with Becky Monegan: “Crosspatch, draw the latch, sit by the fire and spin. Take a cup, drink it up, and let the neighbors in.” Remember this old nursery rhyme? There is a reason why this is good advice for a cranky mood! Find out why, and in the process, produce yarn for many uses. Becky Monegan will teach th beginning spinning the 4 Tuesday of each month, from 7 to 9 pm. This is a repeating class – you can take it once, or as many times as you wish. Materials provided. Class limited to 4. The fee is $35 per week, or $25 for PAA members. Come and learn how to calculate your warp, dress the loom, and weave a sampler, using many different types of 4-harness weaves. From there, the sky is the limit! Spindle Spinning with Cris Welch: Now you can learn to spin. Learn this relaxing, meditative art, and produce yarn to use in knitting, weaving, embroidery, whatever your hobby or passion. Cris Welch will teach beginning th drop spinning the 4 Tuesday of each month, from 7 to 9 pm. This is a repeating class – you can take it once, or as many times as you wish. You will learn the very ancient way of spinning, using only a spindle. Materials provided. Class limited to 4. The fee is $35 per week, or $25 for PAA members. Fiber Art Instruction on a Floor Loom: As always, we are interested in additional “private” or “group” instruction on various weaving techniques, from beginning to advanced, to interested fiber enthusiasts in the Northeast Ohio area. Let us know of your interest. Looms are available for set-up in your home at no rental charge, provided that our educational services (set-up and/or instruction) are purchased at our normal rates starting at 15.00 per hour. Art News From Our Members: Call to artists – deadline July 7 , the University Park Art Fair at Grace Park is a one-day fine art and fine craft show and sale scheduled for Saturday, August 19, 2006, 10am – 6pm - in the heart of the University Park district in downtown Akron, at Perkins/SR 59 and Prospect. Expected to draw more than 75 artists and 1,000 guests, the fair will feature ceramics, glass, wearable art, furniture, drawings & graphics, fiber, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media, painting, photography, sculpture, watercolor, wood art and more. In addition, there will be a large-scale, community participation art project and artist demonstrations. Admission is free. Food, drink and entertainment will be available. Artist registration deadline: July 7, 2006 th Registration is $75/artist and must be submitted by July 7 . Students pay just $40 with valid university ID. Checks, Visa and MasterCard accepted. Peninsula Art Academy volunteer & artist Dixie Albright will be exhibiting her "Organic Xposures" photography in "The Female Figure in Art: Contemporary Northeast Ohio Artists. The show is at Gallery 324 at 1301 East Ninth Street, The Galleria, Cleveland. There will be an opening reception August 5, 2006, with light refreshments. The show runs through August 26. There are openings available in this show – contact Marcus Bales,” I’m looking for both straightforward un-ironic celebrations of the female figure, and for interestingly artistic commentary in and by your piece of work about how our culture sees the female figure. I have room for approximately 50-60 wall works of from approximately 16 x 20 to 48 x 60, and for about a dozen floor-sized sculptures from tabletop to life-sized. I hope you'll get inspired by the notion of the female figure in art and come up with something even you didn't expect yourself to do.” Please send images of the work you would like to have displayed. Please indicate how big each piece is, and each piece’s medium, in either the text of your email or as part of the JPG, whichever is easier. There will be an opening reception August 5, 2006, with light refreshments. The last day of the show will be August 26, so you can pick up unsold work on August 27 and from August 29 - 31.
