ST. PATRICK’S CHURCH - DECEMBER 2006

Principal’s Message It is an Alberta Education mandate for all schools across the province to develop, on an annual basis, a School Plan. This plan is also expected to incorporate a three-year period. One of the goals of this annual exercise is to ensure that all schools collaborate with the School Council in working toward a process of continuous improvement. In the Calgary Catholic School District it is also important that the goals of individual schools be closely aligned with district and provincial goals. I have highlighted seven areas, which represent a few of the key aspects of our 2006-2009 Education Plan. To view the complete “Plan” please visit the Our Lady of Peace website at www.cssd.ab.ca.  To provide a Safe and Caring environment for students. o We will work closely with parents, staff, community supports and agencies, Calgary Police Service, and District Support personnel to promote a safe and caring school.  Children at risk have their needs addressed through effective programs and supports. o We will collaborate with all available personnel and agencies to address the needs of students at risk. The school-based AISI project will focus on early intervention.  Enhance and support Catholicity within the school. o We will continue to promote the goals associated with a Catholic Community of Caring. We will initiate a Social Justice Club and adopt a Foster Child.  Students Demonstrate high standards. o Achievement test results will continue to reflect results above the provincial averages in the “acceptable” and “excellence” categories.  Students model the characteristics of active citizenship o The Recycling Club, Social Justice Club, Husky Council, and Catholic Community of Caring Committee will provide opportunities for students to demonstrate active citizenship.  The school supports high quality teaching. o By utilizing effective professional development and building on the opportunities to enhance teaching through technology, teachers will continue to offer quality programs.  The school demonstrates leadership and continuous improvement. o A number of new initiatives will ensure that the school continues to move forward. Student, parent and district surveys will provide feedback as to the extent of success experienced. Mr. T. Makowski Principal DECEMBER NEWSLETTER SAFETY REMINDERS Let’s Make the School Parking Lot a Safe Place For All As you are aware, the snow and ice have created treacherous conditions on city streets and sidewalks. The slippery state of our parking lot means that it is even more important for everyone to obey the signage at the entrance to the parking lot. You are reminded that students are not to be dropped off and picked up in the parking lot. Although we make this request every month it continues to be a daily problem huge success. A big thank-you to all of those volunteers who assisted with this year’s campaign. SPEED LIMIT FOR SCHOOL AND PLAYGROUND ZONES In school zones, the maximum speed allowed unless otherwise posted, in rural Alberta is 30 Km/h on school days only from 8:00 am- 9:30 am; 11:30 am – 1:30 pm; 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm. In urban areas such as Calgary city limits the maximum speed allowed is 30k/h from 8:00am to 5:00 pm. In playground zones, the speed limit in both rural and urban Alberta is 30 km/h (unless otherwise posted) everyday from 8:30 am to one hour after sunset. A playground or school zone ends where a traffic sign indicates a higher speed or a sign indicated the end of the zone. For more information on Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation’s child traffic safety programs, please visit our website www.saferoads.com or contact us at 780/422-8839 (For toll free service outside of Edmonton, dial 310-0000.) KEEP KIDS SAFE-BE ALERT AROUND KID ZONES When coming up to a school bus, drivers must always use caution.  Drivers are required by law to stop before passing a school bus that has the alternately flashing red lights activated This applies both to buses on your side of the road or buses facing you on the other side of the road, except if the bus is on the other side of a highway divided by a median.  Drivers may proceed past a stopped school bus only when the flashing red lights on the bus have stopped.  Remember to keep an eye out for school buses loading and unloading children in urban areas, even if the lights aren’t flashing.  Always watch for children crossing the road. The fine for passing a school bus with its red lights flashing is $402 and six demerit points. We will be holding two Liturgical celebrations on December 4th at 2:15 pm and December 20th at 8:50 am. In addition teachers and students will be raising money for a variety of charitable endeavours. Our School-wide fundraising effort will be the “Change for Change” challenge to benefit the Mustard Seed. CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF CARING The Calgary Catholic School District has begun a new initiative to improve the climate and culture in our schools. Activities previously sponsored by the Catholic Community of Caring are now included in the Climate and Culture committee of our school. The purpose is to improve the overall social atmosphere of our schools. In order to appraise the needs of our school, student, teacher, and parent surveys were conducted with a sample population of our school. We are looking forward to seeing how we can use these results to improve Our Lady of Peace’s, culture and climate! Many thanks go to all those parents and students that have obliged us with their opinions. In November and December, the students are focusing on the virtue of Caring and how people can care for themselves and others, especially those that are in their community and neighbourhood. Mr. Walker’s Class Allan G. Emily B. Victoria D. Antonie H. Brett V. Mr. Moshurchak’s Class Karissa B. “Change for Change” During the next few weeks, OLP will be involved in a local Calgary charity, the “Mustard Seed Street Ministry”, to help those who are in need in our own city. This supports the virtue of Caring that is being promoted until Christmas. The Mustard Seed is sponsoring a “Shine-a-Thon” coin collection campaign with the theme of “Change for Change”. The fundraiser started November 22 and will finish December 6th. Students have collected over 176 pounds of coin for the Mustard Seed. Excitement generated by the giving is quickly spreading throughout the whole school. The staff at the Mustard Seed is impressed by the generosity of your children. Keep those loonies rolling!!! This year’s fundraiser was a huge success because of you! A big thank you must also go to those teachers who volunteered to have a pie thrown at them as one of the rewards for students who brought in subscriptions! For some students this reward alone was motivation to get those subscriptions in. All in fun though! The proceeds raised from this year’s Casino fundraiser that was held on August 3rd and 4th of this past summer was over $82,000!! Please feel free to attend our next council meeting to add your input to the discussion on how these proceeds can contribute to our schools improvement and/or to enhance our students’ learning. Mrs. Tanis Jaras and Mrs. Connie Bourassa School Council Volunteers  Do not handle food if you are vomiting or have diarrhea. These are two of the major symptoms of food borne illness and can easily get into the food. It may only take a few germs to make you sick, so even good hand washing may not stop the germs in their tracks. Clean and sanitize. The clean step gets rid of visible dirt and the sanitize step kills the germs. Sanitizing can be done in the dishwasher or with household bleach at strength of 15 ml per 4 litres of water or one tablespoon per gallon of water. Stay home if you are ill with vomiting or diarrhea.   OFFICE PHONES Office phones are for student use in EMERGENCIES only. Please ensure that your student has a telephone card or change to use the payphone in non-emergency situations. Do not forget to follow food safety rules with your food over the holiday season as well. Cook it well. Keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot. Separate cooked and raw. If in doubt, throw it out. If you have any questions feel free to phone Public Health Inspection at 943-8060 or check out our new website at www.calgaryhealthregion.ca/hecomm/envhealth/envhealt h.htm. Please provide the following documents when registering your child: Proof of Residence Birth Certificate Parent Baptismal JANUARY BUS PASSES January bus passes will be available to qualified students starting 8th January to the 10th January. A MESSAGE FROM THE NURSE As the holidays approach, the Environmental Health Department wants to remind families of some key ways to stay well. More visitors, more events to attend and more food means increased opportunity for germs to spread. Here are some simple ways to prevent spreading those germs:  Wash, wash, wash your hands. It is a simple thing, yet it stops the spread of colds, flu’s, diarrheas and other germs. Wash after going to the bathroom, before handling food and before eating. Warm water and soap are still the most effective way to wash your hands DECEMBER NEWSLETTER Is it influenza, a cold or “stomach flu”?
