Saturday, December 16th, 2006 Welcome and Enjoy the Day! Dear Scribes and Friends, Thank you for joining us this day. We hope you will have a wonderful time and many happy memories to share. Today is a day of networking and fun. Learn a new skill or teach a skill. Take one of the focus classes or lecture. Make a new friend or just chat with other scribes. Have a backlog you need to finish? Bring it. The goal is to have fun and enjoy the day. In Service, Lady Akiko (Shire of Rokkehealden) and Dame Ellen of the Scholars (Shire of Baile na Scolairi) 9 : 0 0 a m Troll-Please remember to bring proof of membership. Library Area We are asking and encouraging scribes to bring some of their favorite books for other scribes to see. Make sure you put your name inside the book so we know who it belongs to. Lord Aidan from the Shire of Rokkehealden will the keeper of the library for the day. No food or dink will be allowed in the book area. You will be allowed to copy down titles but not allowed to trace out of the book. Scribal Displays We are asking and encouraging all the Midlands Scribes to bring their portfolios or projects and them for other scribes to see. We will have someone watching the area to protect your work. No food or drink will be allowed near the display area. Scribal Blank Challenge. Can you and a scribe you've never worked with before create a scribal blank in under an hour? Sure you can. If you have supplies please bring them. If not that's ok, just let me know and we will make sure you have what you need. Please sign up in advance if you're interested. Send an email to Lady Akiko. Lunch by the Scolari Cooks Chilled sliced roast of Titivillus (turkey and venison). Carrot quills, celery styli, and other assorted fresh vegetables. Bread – or erasers as the need arises. A colorful palette of Seasonal Fruit. Hard boiled eggs unsuitable for glair. Or and Argent Cheeses. Haslett – a subtlety of fruit resembling the entrails of the last scribe to mis-spell the Queen’s name. Spiced nuts – walnut hulls not included. See Lady Akiko if you want to work on this project. CalligraphyIllumination Gilding No more excuses! Bring your backlogs and commissions. Work among friends and finish up that project. This is for scribes of all levels. Come ask your questions. Teach someone a new skill. Relax and have fun. Network. 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm Scribal Tea and sweet delights by the Rokkehealden Scriptorium This will be a perfect time to network; share emails’s and talk about what you learned. Or maybe you still want to learn more. We’re hoping to pair calligraphers and illuminators. Class Descriptions: Calligraphy in an Arabic Style – Learn to write English in an Arabic style hand. For beginners through advanced. Number of Students: 10 Cost: 0.00 Bring paper, pen and ink if you have them (any type will do). I will supply materials to those who do not have them. Working with Parchment – Hands on discussion of parchment use—how it differs from paper and pergamenta, how to prepare it for writing and fix problem area (bleeding, oiliness,, wrinkles, etc._> Plus a run down of how to make your own parchment from rawhide chews (less intensive and smelly working from raw skins). Cost: 0.00 a small amount of parchment will be available for purchase. Ink Making Workshop – This workshop will meet twice during the day. The first session will focus on methods and material preparation for making 2 kinds of period ink: Oak Gall and Walnut ink. In the second session, we will finish the ink making process and bottle up our results. How to make a Scroll Case - This will be on going through-out the day. Just tell THL Austin you want to make one*** Bring the following materials: 1 ft. of ribbon for ties (optional), 1 yard of material, 2 pieces of heavy duty card-board (not card stock), Minimum size 10 x 12, Maximum size 18 x 16 Introduction to Knotwork- How to draw simple knotwork patterns. Please bring a pencil and eraser; no cost. Lectures: Tree Sap: Why not use epoxy or PVA as a gold ground? Tree Sap a look at organic binders and their properties. Peter the Goldsmith talks about the tree saps and organic binders and their origins and sources. Are we there, yet? it's a long way from Java to Europe Projects: Thank you cards project request! This can be a great way to practice your calligraphy or simple bar and ivy. I need to complete roughly 30. If you’re interested please see Lady Akiko for details. I will have the card stock with me. Bring paint and whatever else you might use. Scribal Blank Challenge – see above for description. Backlog Deputy will also be on hand to hopefully find lost owners of awarded scrolls.
