Who is the course for ?
DIPLOMA in Hair and Beauty Studies
The 14-19 Diploma offers a unique blend of general and applied learning. Applied Learning - acquiring knowledge and skills through tasks or contexts that have many of the characteristics of real work - is at the heart of the 14-19 Diploma. It is designed principally for 14 to 19 year-olds and agreed by the Secretary of State, will recognise achievement at Levels 1, 2 and 3 and will be available for 14 employment sectors with Hair and Beauty as of them.
What are the entry requirements ?
You will need to demonstrate at interview that you have a desire to work in the industry and that have an aptitude for this vocational qualification. You should be able to communicate with people and be able to visit work places. You need to have a good reference from your school or college with a good record of attendance and behavior. No formal qualifications required but you will be interviewed to see if this course is right for you.
How is the course structured (What will I study) ?
The structure of the Diploma The Diploma at Level 1 requires 600 guided learning hours and is broadly comparable, in terms of average length of study, to 4-5 GCSEs. The Diploma at Level 2 requires 800 guided learning hours and is broadly comparable, in terms of average length of study, to 5-6 GCSEs. The Diploma at Level 3 requires 1080 guided learning hours and is broadly comparable, in terms of average length of study, to 3 GCE A levels. Principal learning- information and experiences relating to the sector you have chosen. Functional skills- English, Maths and Information Technology Work and life skills-you will develop your skills in creative thinking, independent enquiry, management and team work Work experience- a minimum of 10 days work experience Individual project- you will complete a student project which will give you the opportunity to apply what you have learnt in a practical context Additional and specialist learning-an opportunity to learn a different subject from what is within the diploma
How will I be supported in my studies ?
You will have a personal tutor and a tutorial session in order to guide and advise you through your programme of study. This may be on a one to one basis or as a group tutorial. If you have a special educational need that you would like us to know about in order that we may support you through your programme then let us know at your earliest convenience. There will also be a period of work experience to enhance your understanding of the industry.
What can I do on achieving my qualification ?
There are six industries: hairdressing, barbering, beauty therapy, nail services, African-type hairdressing/barbering and spa therapy. Career pathways from hair and beauty into related industries allow learners to explore links with fashion, health and fitness, wellbeing, retailing, paramedical treatments, film and TV, complementary and alternative medicine, care and creative industries
