Councilman Smith and other City and Valley business leaders pushed to have SCAG gather statistical data for the San Fernando Valley as a separate region to recognize its size, its economic and cultural contributions and its distinct identity. "This will give the Valley a seat at the table so that we can make the interests and views of Valley residents heard," Councilman Smith said. This will also enable businesses, government agencies and academics to get data on traffic, air quality and growth specifically for the Valley. SCAG deals with planning for issues important to the Valley that cut across regions, such as transportation, growth, waste management and air quality.
