FAREWELL 2006 Another year has passed and we have had to say goodbye to some good friends who have given us many hours of reading enjoyment. This year we have included those actors and directors who have provided entertainment on Descriptive Video. Below are the names of the authors and actors or directors who have died in the last year. We have included the latest of their books or movies, although some have written many. To see all of the books and movies available, contact your Talking Book Center. Edward Albert BUTTERFLIES ARE FREE Leonard Gershe RC 56808 Play about twenty-year-old Don Baker, born blind, who moves into his own apartment in New York City. He begins a relationship with his carefree actress neighbor, nineteen-year-old divorcée Jill Tanner. When Don's overprotective mother arrives for a surprise visit, she immediately disapproves of his new friend. This book contains some strong language. Mr. Albert starred in the movie. The author highlights architecture, museums, ballparks, performing arts centers, and other cultural points of interest. He briefly mentions hotels and restaurants. Paul Avrich ANARCHIST PORTRAITS RC 33641 This book contains essays written over a 20-year period focusing primarily on the Soviet Union and the United States. The author describes the anarchist movement through the lives of participants, pointing out their hatred of injustice and tyranny and their warnings against concentrated power. Peter Benchley WHITE SHARK RC 38851 Ernst Kruger has a mission to complete for the Fuehrer, which involves the bronze box on board a submarine. When the sub has to make a sudden dive, it implodes and all is lost except for the bronze box. The bronze box has been opened. Simon Chase, of the Osprey Island Marine Institute soon knows that there is a dangerous creature out there in the sea. This book contains violence and strong language. Peter Boyle MONSTER’S BALL DV 00421 Soon after he retires, a southern corrections officer is drawn into an unlikely relationship with a young black woman desperately in need of assistance. Billy Bob Thornton and Halle Berry (Oscar for best actress) star in this powerful drama of love and redemption. This movie contains violence, sex, nudity and coarse language. Richard P. Brickner MY SECOND TWENTY YEARS: AN UNEXPECTED LIFE RC 10674 This book is an honest and unsparing autobiographical account of the aftermath of an accident that left the author paralyzed. Brown describes his childhood in the segregated south, personal life, legal troubles, and career in the music business. Assesses his impact on American culture during the 1960s civil rights movement. The introduction is by Marc Eliot. This book contains some strong language. Frederick Busch DON'T TELL ANYONE RC 53322 This book is a collection of short stories and a novella concerning families and betrayal. In "Heads" a widowed mother watches her daughter, a law school student who was raped fall apart. In "Still the Same Old Story," a teenage daughter suffers as a result of her parents' infidelities. This book contains explicit descriptions of sex and strong language. Octavia E. Butler PARABLE OF THE SOWER RC 39777 In 2024, most well to do families live in walled enclaves to protect themselves from the roaming drug addicts who live in squalor and are prone to stealing, rape, and murder. Lauren Olamina, eighteen, suffers from hyperempathy, which means that she feels not only her own pain but also that of others. When the addicts overrun Lauren's community, she and others are forced to seek refuge outside the walls. This book contains strong language and violence. Bebe Moore Campbell SEVENTY-TWO-HOUR HOLD RC 60518 African American divorced mom Keri struggles to help her bipolar daughter Trina, who's heading to Brown University in the fall. After traditional treatments don't benefit Trina, Keri turns to a radical group who eschews psychiatric methods and models itself after the Underground Railroad. Strong language. 2005. Ernestine Gilbreth Carey BELLS ON THEIR TOES Ernestine Gilbreth Carey and Frank Gilbreth RC 26310 This story continues the saga of the Gilbreth family in the years following Mr. Gilbreth's sudden death. Mrs. Gilbreth takes over the business and struggles to keep the family together. Her buoyant spirits see them through one crisis after another, as the children grow up, attend school, and begin families of their own. It is the sequel to "Cheaper by the Dozen", RC 23282. We also have the movie Cheaper by the Dozen, DV 407. Oleg Cassini IN MY OWN FASHION: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY RC 26609 The author says that he understood clothes, appreciated fine fabrics, and loved girls. So what else could Oleg Cassini become besides a top fashion designer and great lover? Born into the Russian aristocracy in 1913, Cassini has led a life brimming with glamour, all related here in juicy detail. The trail of dropped names includes Gene Tierney, Grace Kelly, and Jackie Kennedy. Betty Comden OFF STAGE RC 44458 Comden and her collaborator, Adolph Green, composed the music for many Broadway and movie musicals. Here she reminisces about her personal life from her Brooklyn childhood in the 1920s through her long marriage, widowhood, and the death of her son. Interspersed are essays about such topics as aging and following fashion and tributes to her friends. Nellie Connally FROM LOVE FIELD: OUR FINAL HOURS WITH PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY RC 57621 The widow of former Texas governor John Connally recalls the fateful Dallas ride in the presidential limousine on November 22, 1963, when JFK was fatally shot and the governor severely wounded. Nellie Connally describes the chaos of the scene, her husband's long recovery, and the assassination's effect on her and her three children. Curtis Cate MY ROAD TO OPERA: THE RECOLLECTIONS OF BORIS GOLDOVSKY With BORIS GOLDOVSKY RC 15100 This book is an anecdotal memoir by the man known to American opera lovers as Mr. Opera. Goldovsky, who began his musical life as a despiser of opera, is the lively and omniscient commentator on intermission features of the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts. Maureen Daly SEVENTEENTH SUMMER RC 25758 A woman recalls her 17th summer when she lived in a small Wisconsin town in the leisurely days before World War I and fell in love for the first time. Theodore Draper VERY THIN LINE: THE IRAN-CONTRA AFFAIRS RC 34336 Historian Draper pored over 50,000 pages of testimony, private depositions, reports, and personal notes of key figures to compile his explanation of what really happened in the Iran-Contra affairs. The title refers to "the thin line that separates the legitimate exercise from the illegitimate exercise of power in our government." Mike Douglas I'LL BE RIGHT BACK: MEMORIES OF TV'S GREATEST TALK SHOW RC 51370 The host of the former long running Mike Douglas Show considers himself "the world's luckiest fan." He provides highlights from over two decades of chatting with celebrities, including Ray Charles, Princess Grace, John Wayne, Fred Astaire, and John Lennon. His only bitter note is how Westinghouse replaced him in 1981. Katherine Dunham TOUCH OF INNOCENCE: MEMOIRS OF CHILDHOOD RC 42992 This book is the third-person autobiographical account of the noted dancer and anthropologist covering only the first eighteen years of her life. Dunham describes growing up in a Midwest interracial family in the early twentieth century. She endures a difficult childhood at the hands of her angry and abusive father. Oriana Fallaci INSHALLAH RC 38484 Set in Lebanon of Fall 1983, this is a story in three acts about the civil war in Beirut. Act one: the French and American barracks are bombed, killing more than 400 men. Act two: the Italian peacekeepers await the bomb that will destroy their barracks; in the meantime, they do their best to keep order in the divided city. Act three: a brutal battle breaks out and the Italian forces must face a group of militant fundamentalists. This book contains strong language and violence. Gerald R. Ford A TIME TO HEAL: THE AUROBIOGRAPHY OF GERALD R. Glenn Ford THE CASABLANCA EXPRESS DV 380 When Nazi commandos hijack a train carrying Winston Churchill to a secret meeting in North Africa, three Allied agents attempt a rescue. This move is a heart-hammering suspense and lethal nonstop action with Glenn Ford, Donald Pleasance, Jason Connery and Francisco Quinn. Reuven Frank OUT OF THIN AIR: THE BRIEF WONDERFUL LIFE OF NETWORK NEWS RC 34374 Frank joined NBC TV in 1950 as a writer and rose to the rank of network president not once, but twice. His history of television news uses political conventions as the framework. As Frank details how television news has changed since the networks began on May 1, 1948, he also describes his rise to the top. He includes stories about well-known news figures and TV shows. Betty Friedan THE FEMININE MYSTIQUE RC 53797 1960's feminist discusses problems of American women. Considers a distorted image of femininity to have arrested women's intellectual growth, hampered their sexual fulfillment, threatened their marriages, and become their barrier to selfrealization. Milton Friedman TWO LUCKY PEOPLE: MEMOIRS RC 47418 Nobel Prize winner Milton Friedman and his wife, Rose, describe their passion for economics and their involvement with presidents and other world leaders. A section by Milton Friedman explains their free-market philosophy, its eventual acceptance, and its impact on important events of the twentieth century. John Kenneth Galbraith THE ESSENTIAL GALBRAITH RC 54085 This book contains key selections from five decades of writing on economic topics. In introductions written in 2001, the author places the essays in historical context and comments on their continued relevance. The last entry is Galbraith's speech "The Unfinished Business of the Century," given at the London School of Economics in 1999. Clifford Geertz WORKS AND LIVES: THE ANTHROPOLOGIST AS AUTHOR RC 29773 The author addresses the problems faced by anthropologists who attempt to write authentic descriptions of their experiences and discoveries. He examines the works of such anthropologists as Claude Levi-Strauss, Ruth Benedict, Bronislaw Malinowski, and Edward Evan Evans-Pritchard to determine if they are unable to achieve the goal of writing convincingly. Michael Gilbert SMALLBONE DECEASED RC 44345 The elder Horniman of the firm of Horniman, Birley, and Craine, has died and his son Bob has just taken his place. Bob is now cotrusteeing with a Mr. Smallbone on one of the firm's large accounts. When Horniman is unsuccessful in contacting Smallbone to discuss the account, he opens the deed box himself and finds Mr. Smallbone's body. Gerald Green KARPOV’S BRAIN RC 19747 This book pits a vicious KGB agent against a Jewish dissident with a profound desire to join his beloved wife in Israel. With the case almost sealed, the agent begins to suffer severe epileptic seizures. Radical brain surgery at the hand of a former lover transforms the soul of the man so he is driven to save his former victim. This book contains some strong language and some descriptions of sex. Ian Hamilton IN SEARCH OF J D SALINGER RC 28385 When Hamilton first wrote an unauthorized biography of Salinger, the noted author had its publication banned. Hamilton then wrote this new version, casting himself as a sleuth in search of information on a writer. He describes the parallel between Salinger's fiction and his personal life. He also discusses the success of "Catcher in the Rye." Bruce Hart & Carole Hart SOONER OR LATER RC 21002 Jessie falls in love with Michael, a local rock star, the very first time she sees him. And Michael is obviously interested in her. The only problem is that Michael is seventeen and Jessie is thirteen. This book was written for junior and senior high readers. Barnard Hughes SISTER ACT II: BACK IN THE HABIT DV 00092 Whoopi Goldberg goes undercover as Sister Mary Clarence at a troubled inner-city school. It continues by interweaving Hussein's life story with the history of Iraq and concludes with an account of Desert Storm. This book was written for junior and senior high and older readers. Jane Jacobs THE DEATH AND LIFE OF GREAT AMERICAN CITIES RC 14752 This book discusses the plight of American cities, attacks current city planning, and sets forth new planning principles designed to improve the deplorable living and working conditions of the cities. Patricia Kennedy Lawford SYMPTOMS OF WITHDRAWAL: A MEMOIR OF SNAPSHOTS AND REDEMPTION Christopher Kennedy Lawford RC 61158 Lawford recounts his life as the son of Patricia Kennedy and movie actor Peter Lawford. He describes experiences with drugs, alcohol, and debauchery followed by twenty years of sobriety. He also details his own acting career and relates competitiveness with his Kennedy cousins. This book contains strong language and some explicit descriptions of sex. Coretta Scott King CORETTA SCOTT KING Rhodes, Lisa Renee RC 53335 This book is a biography of Coretta Scott King, political activist and widow of Martin Luther King Jr., the slain civil rights leader. It discusses her childhood in rural Alabama, her marriage, and her crusade to keep her husband's message of peace and equality alive after his murder in 1968. This book was written for grades 6-9. Bruno Kirby GOOD MORNING VIETNAM DV 186 Rated R. Robin Williams plays a fast talking, funny disc jockey on Armed Forces radio during the Vietnam War whose barrage of irreverent humor scores with G.I.'s but flops with the top brass like Second Lt. Kunhardt THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT RC 49738 This book is the companion to a PBS television series, a survey of U.S. Presidents using a thematic, rather than chronological, approach. In ten chapters, the chief executives are grouped by campaign style, challenges faced, or other circumstances that shaped their public image. Different historical periods are represented in each category. O'Day, Anita HIGH TIMES, HARD TIMES RC 17649 This autobiography of famous singer Anita O'Day tells how she started singing at the age of twelve for coins thrown on the dance floor. She became a band singer in the 1940s, suffered through two bad marriages and a fifteen-year bout with heroin addiction, and finally became recognized as one of the world's great jazz singers. This book includes discography. Elisabeth Ogilvie AN ANSWER IN THE TIDE: BENNETT'S ISLAND SAGA RC 59373 This book is set in Bennett's Island, Maine. Lobsterman Sorensen's son, Jamie, falls in love with an attractive married newcomer. His affair, out of sync with local values, strains his relations with family and community, proves dangerous for Jamie himself, and nearly leads to a lobster war. Quiet and reserved, he has an easy smile and time for 8-year-old Joey, who soon comes to idolize him. When he helps the settlers against the cattle rancher intent on driving them from the valley, the rancher hires a black-hatted, black-hearted gunfighter. Floyd Patterson ONCE THEY HEARD THE CHEERS W. C. Heinz RC 14371 The author takes a look at the sports heroes of yesterday as they are after their sports careers. The stories includes boxers Floyd Patterson, Willie Pep, Sugar Ray Robinson; broncobusters Jim Teacher and Freckles Brown; baseball's Joe Page and Pete Reiser; and football's Willie Davis. The happiest story is that of boxer Rocky Graziano, a TV celebrity and a millionaire, while the saddest tale is that of fighter Beau Jack, who shines shoes for a living. Gordon Parks THE LEARNING TREE RC 33832 In this portrait of a black family in a small Southern town before World War II, the center of interest is the adolescent boy Newt.
