You probably have lots of questions – mainly, “How will the Phi Theta Kappa Experience benefit me?” Opportunities for Recognition • Golden Key Membership Pin • Membership Certificate • Membership ID Card • Diploma Seal . • One of the most visible symbols of Phi Theta Kappa membership is the Golden Key Membership Pin. Members receive the Golden Key Membership Pin and wear it proudly as an emblem of their academic achievement. • Members also receive a gold-embossed Membership Certificate and Identification Card. The certificate is suitable for framing. . • The Membership ID Card can be presented to college officials or potential employers as verification of your membership in Phi Theta Kappa. • The gold embossed Diploma Seal is placed on the associate degree diploma of Phi Theta Kappa members. Phi Theta Kappa Scholarships Associate Degree Scholarships • Up to $30,000 awarded annually • $1,000 scholarships Baccalaureate Degree Scholarships • Nearly $150,000 awarded annually • $5,000-$7,500 scholarships . • Phi Theta Kappa offers both merit-based and need-based scholarships for associate degree course work, and completion of baccalaureate degrees. • There are a number of scholarship programs, and award amounts vary from $1,000 to $7,500 depending on the program. Phi Theta Kappa Scholarships Discipline Specific Scholarships • For students majoring in Business, Nursing, Respiratory Care, Emergency Medical Services, and other majors • $1,000 scholarships . There are also discipline-specific scholarships of $1,000 available for several different majors, as well as scholarship resources for minorities and women. Corporate Sponsored Scholarships All-USA Academic Team and Coca-Cola All-State Community College Academic Teams • Sponsored by USA Today, Coca-Cola, and the American Association of Community Colleges • Nearly $500,000 Awarded Annually • Special recognition in USA TODAY newspaper . • The Society works to develop scholarship initiatives with corporate partners and foundations to increase scholarship opportunities for members. The All-USA Community College Academic Team, the Coca-Cola All- State Community College Academic Team, and the New Century Scholars Program are examples of such initiatives. • The All-USA Academic Team is jointly sponsored by the American Association of Community Colleges, Phi Theta Kappa and USA TODAY. Each year team members receive coverage in USA TODAY. • The Coca-Cola All-State Community College Academic Team program seeks to honor up to 300 community college students. Scholarship First • Membership is based on academic achievement • Participation in activities is NOT required, but expands your opportunities and experience . • Scholarship is first in Phi Theta Kappa. This means that membership eligibility and membership maintenance are based entirely on academic performance. • The Society offers an array of personal development opportunities; however, participation is not required. • Members quickly learn that the more they become involved in Phi Theta Kappa, the greater their return will be. Involvement will help you develop skills that employers are looking for, contribute service to the community and broaden your academic horizons. Honors In Action • Honors Study Topic • Honors in Action • Honors Seminars • Honors Institute Members of Alpha Chi Zeta, Seattle Central Community College, & Pi Iota, Shoreline Community College , Whidbey Island ferry, Seattle . • Across the Society, chapters unite in exploring the same theme for Honors in Action. This year our study theme, known as the Honors Study Topic, is about The Democratization of Information. • Chapters and members are encouraged to explore the Honors Study Topic, then develop projects that incorporate the Society’s Hallmarks of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Fellowship for their college and community. . • To complement the study, Phi Theta Kappa produces Honors Seminars, which are broadcast each fall. The seminars feature experts on the Honors Study Topic and provide opportunities for discussion across the nation and abroad. • Phi Theta Kappa also offers you the opportunity to attend the Society’s premier scholarly event – the International Honors Institute. As a participant, you will engage in a week of in-depth study and discussion of the Honors Study Topic while networking with members throughout the Society. The Honors Institute is held at a different university each June. Other Opportunities Nota Bene Honors Anthology • Nationally circulated community college academic journal • Professional publishing opportunity for members • $3,000 awarded annually . • Nota Bene is Phi Theta Kappa’s annual literary anthology which recognizes the outstanding writing of members and demonstrates to the literary public the academic excellence found at community colleges. • Each year Phi Theta Kappa selects approximately 30 literary works for publication in Nota Bene. Authors of manuscripts judged most outstanding are awarded scholarships totaling $3,000. • In addition to the opportunities for scholarships, Nota Bene provides Phi Theta Kappa members with the experience of being published in an academic journal that is distributed to more than 2,000 college libraries. Other Opportunities USA TODAY Case Study Challenge • Scholarly research • Four Case Studies published on the USA TODAY Collegiate Website • $2,000 awarded annually . • The Case Study Challenge gives you an opportunity to gain valuable experience in academic research using USA TODAY newspapers. • The Challenge awards $2,000 in stipends annually. Authors of the top four case studies receive stipends of $500 each, presented during Phi Theta Kappa’s Annual Convention, and their case studies are published on the USA TODAY collegiate academic website. Accept the Invitation www.ptk.org Members of Alpha Kappa Xi, Santa Fe Community College, overlooking the Rio Grande River, White Rock, New Mexico Eligibility Requirements • 3.5 Cumulative GPA • 12 Hours of Associate Degree Coursework . • Generally, members must achieve a 3.5 cumulative grade point average, and have completed at least 12 hours of associate degree coursework. • Part-time and online students are eligible. • Students are not required to be United States citizens to accept membership. As long as the student possesses all rights of citizenship in his or her country, the student would meet the citizenship requirement for membership eligibility. Making Membership Official • One-Time Membership Fee of $65.00 • Induction Ceremony TBA Members of Alpha Kappa Xi, Santa Fe Community College, St. Francis Cathedral, Santa Fe . • Membership requires a one-time membership fee consisting of an International Fee -$45, Regional Fee - $6, and Local Fee - $14. • Cash , credit cards and checks are accepted. • Checks for the total one-time membership fee of $65.00 should be made payable to National Park Community College and submitted to the NPCC Business Office by 3:00 p.m., Monday, 27 April 2010. • No applications or fees will be accepted after this date. . • The Induction Ceremony publicly recognizes the academic achievement of members.
