A Dog Travel Crate
For Comfy Travel Accommodations
By Lacey Waters
A dog travel crate is a hard-sided carrier that allows you to comfortably take
your dog along with you when you travel. Airlines have requirements that
you must adhere to but you do have some flexibility in what you choose.
The term "crate" can refer to the smaller truly portable dog crates or the
larger dog travel cages. And your choices will depend on the size of your dog
and how he will be traveling in the plane.
If you have a smaller dog, you will want to
choose an airline approved dog crate such as
the ones marketed under the name of
Petmate. These are made of hard plastic and
have a carrying handle on the top.
There are plenty of air holes for your dog to
breathe and the wire ventilation gives your
dog good visibility which will lessen the
stress of traveling.
For large dogs, you can choose from either a
large hard plastic kennel (such as the Petmate ones,) a wire cage, or even a
wooden cage. Since these will be in the cargo bay, they need to be sturdy
enough to protect your dog as well as give him a sense of security. They also

need to be very well labeled on the top and you will need to include some
type of water container.
Regardless of the size dog you have or the type of airline dog crate you end
up getting, the comfort of your pet must be your first consideration. The crate
should be large enough for your dog to be able to stand up and turn around.
The airlines require this as well as does general common sense and courtesy
for your dog.
You'll also need to provide some type of
bedding on the floor of the crate. For smaller
dogs that will be with you constantly, a soft
towel or blanket are perfect.
For larger dogs that will be traveling in the
cargo bay and be away from you for several
hours, a lining of newspaper is a better idea
in case your dog should have an accident or
his water bowl gets spilled.
Be sure to include a favorite toy or
something that will help make your dog feel more secure while traveling.
Your dog's stress level will likely be elevated due to unfamiliar sights and
sounds so anything you can do to help ease the stress will be greatly
appreciated by your dog.
And while getting the right dog travel crate is extremely important, you also
need to know about travel safety for your dog. Stop by
