IMPAC Annual Report – 2005-2006 Food Science - Science II Cluster Kara Caldwell-Freeman, Lead Discipline Faculty, CSU Pomona Summary of Identified Issues During the 2005-2006 year, Nutrition and Food Science faculty met for regional IMPAC meetings in Los Angeles on November 19, 2005 and on January 21, 2006, and at the California Dietetic association Annual Meeting May 5, 2006. The following issues were identified: 1. The duplication of effort by the LDTP group and the fact that the Dietetics pattern developed by IMPAC was more specific. 2. The status of Dietetic Education at both the 2-year and 4-year institutions. 3. The American Dietetic Association Education Task Force Report. Identified Trends/Future Directions The field of Dietetics continues to grow and job opportunities, especially in clinical dietetics continue to increase in California are abundant in California. There is an increased number of students entering Dietetics education programs in the state. Trends identified at Regional and Statewide meetings include the following:    There continues to be an increase in students applying and graduating from Didactic Programs in Dietetics. Many of these students are either second degree or post-baccalaureate students who are looking at a career change. There is an increased interest in programs such as Culinology-the combination of science and culinary arts. The final American Dietetic Education Task Force Report has not been released as this time, but will impact the direction of Dietetic Education. Comments from Statewide Meetings and the General Field A number of accomplishments by the discipline have been identified:  A spreadsheet was developed to assist programs in community colleges in aiding students transferring to the four-year colleges and u universities.  A nutrition letter was developed that was sent to two and four year programs in California  Courses have bee n developed or modified to meet the transfer package.  Schools and colleges have not just talked, but have implemented changes to facilitate transfer from he two year to the four-year programs.  Participants developed course outlines and student learning objectives for courses that would transfer. 1  New degree programs such as culinology were discussed Recommendations for the Discipline  Food Science and Nutrition should continue to meet to discuss common problems and issues Topics for Further Discussion  None at this time Recommendations Forwarded /to be forwarded to: CAN – None at this time.
