Document audience: School Administrators/Teachers Note: Parents/Guardians may also follow these directions to install and configure Lexia Reading for home use, although some information will not pertain to them. Document Contents: “System Requirements” on page 1 “Installing Lexia Reading Student Software on Windows” on page 2 “Installing Lexia Reading Student Software on Macintosh” on page 5 “Configuring Lexia Reading” on page 7 System Requirements Lexia Reading student software must be installed and configured on each student machine and not run off a central server due to the large number of graphic and sound files. Lexia provides download instructions and the client code (required to configure the student software) via an email confirmation when the product is delivered. Component System Requirement Operating System Windows XP (SP3), Vista, Windows 7 Mac OS X 10.4 or higher Memory 256 MB of RAM (or better) Disk Space 500 MB of hard drive space (or better) Sound Speakers or headset (headset recommended) Graphics 32 MB acccelarated video graphics card (or better) Screen Minimum screen resolution of 800x600 Internet Connection A persistent internet connection is required. Lexia Reading student software uses minimal bandwidth to com‐ municate with the server. Firewall/Proxy Schools that use a firewall/proxy must “whitelist” access to Content‐filtering software student.mylexia.com and update.lexialearning.com. Download the Windows version of the student software to the Windows machine on which you want to install Lexia Reading. 2. During the download, when prompted whether to Run or Save, choose Save and select a des‐ tination (such as your Desktop.) 3. Double‐click on the downloaded Lexia Reading.exe to start the installation. 4. Click the Run button to launch the installation program. Note: You may receive a warning message from Windows, saying the publisher of the soft‐ ware is unknown. This is normal, and it is safe to click OK to continue with the install. 5. The Setup Installation wizard displays. Click Next. 6. Read the terms of the license agreement, and click I accept the agreement. If you do not accept the license agreement, the installation will not proceed. Click Next. Installing and Configuring Page 2 of 8 Lexia Reading Student Software LIDOC V2010.06.09 7. Lexia Reading will be installed into C:\Program Files\Lexia (or C:\Program Files\Lexia Reading UK) by default. It is strongly recommended that you do not change the default installation directory. (If you wish to select a different location click the folder and select a different loca‐ tion. Click the OK button to select this location.) Click Next. 8. Enter your customer code (this was emailed by the Lexia Order Department to the main Lexia contact for your school or district). Select the configuration options you wish on the screen. If you selected to use a proxy server, you are prompted to enter your proxy server informa‐ tion. For information, see “Configuring Lexia Reading” on page 7. Click Next. 10. Setup is now ready to install Lexia Reading student software on the machine. Click Next to proceed with the installation. Lexia Reading will create a program group and desktop shortcuts for the application. 11. When you see a message that installation is complete, select the box labeled “Do you want to launch Lexia Reading now?” and click Finish. 12. To configure the Lexia Reading student software, see “Configuring Lexia Reading” on page 7. You must configure the installation prior to distributing it to other student machines. Installing Lexia Reading Student Software on Macintosh 1. Download the Macintosh version of the student software to the Macintosh machine on which you want to install Lexia Reading. 2. Read the terms of the license agreement and click Agree. If you do not accept the license agreement, the installation will not proceed. A window will open on the screen. Simply drag and drop the Lexia Reading (or Lexia Reading UK for international versions) icon from the left to the Applications folder on the right of the window. This will install the Lexia Reading student software as Lexia Reading (Lexia Reading UK for international versions) under Applications. 5. To configure the Lexia Reading student software, see “Configuring Lexia Reading” on page 7. You must configure the installation prior to distributing the installation to other student machines. Installing and Configuring Page 6 of 8 Lexia Reading Student Software LIDOC V2010.06.09 Configuring Lexia Reading You will need your unique customer code in order to configure the software prior to initial use. Note: You must configure Lexia Reading prior to distributing the Lexia Reading stu‐ dent software to other machines. 1. Double‐click on the Lexia Reading icon to launch the product. 2. If Lexia Reading is not yet configured, the settings screen will display. If the screen doesn’t display, or if you need to view this screen at a later date to change any of the settings, hold down the A and S keys immediately after launching Lexia Reading. Note: Proxy users who require a proxy username/password prompt will be required to login to the proxy server immediately after launching Lexia Reading. 3. Make changes to the Settings screen if needed, and click Save. Installing and Configuring Page 7 of 8 Lexia Reading Student Software LIDOC V2010.06.09 General Settings Customer Code: Enter your customer code into the space provided. Install Updates: This button will be clickable if any updates are available. Advanced Settings Server URL: This should not be changed (https://student.mylexia.com) Full Screen (800 x 600): Select if you want to change your screen resolution to 800 x 600. Oth‐ erwise, Lexia Reading will use your default screen resolution and put a black border around the application to hide the desktop. Check for Updates: Select if you want the software to check for updates. Hide Password: The default setting is for the student password to be displayed during entry; select this option if you want to obscure the password during entry. Network Request Timeout (Seconds): Leave at 120 seconds unless the student software is displaying timeout messages while running on your network. Proxy Settings Use these settings only if your school accesses the Internet through a proxy server. If your school uses a proxy server, you must configure the required proxy settings or you will receive an error when you try to run the Lexia Reading student software. Proxy Address (required): IP address of your school proxy server. Proxy Port (required): Port used to access the proxy server. Prompt for Proxy Username and Password (optional): Select this option in order to prompt the user for a proxy username and password each time Lexia Reading is launched. The user must enter the proxy information in order to use Lexia Reading. Proxy User (optional): The username requested by the proxy server. Proxy Password (optional): The password for the username. Note: Windows Vista Ultimate users may need to reconfigure their configuration settings to overcome old settings being saved in shadow files. The best way to do this is make sure the server URL is: https://student.mylexia.com on the configura‐ tion screen. Save your changes. 4.
