The Brooklyn College Foundation Annual Report, 2006–2007
The Brooklyn College Chorale
Dear Friends of Brooklyn College
The funds raised by the Brooklyn College Foundation, chaired by Marge Magner, are of critical importance to the College’s efforts to renew itself and to raise yet further its academic reputation. The 2006–2007 annual report is an occasion to tell you about the Foundation’s support and give you a sense of what it means for us. You know about the investments we are making in the physical plant––the new library, the West Quad Project, and, on the drawing board, a new science building and a center for the performing arts. These form the settings in which faculty members teach and students learn. Forty-two faculty members joined us last fall, bringing new ideas and new energies to classroom and laboratory. Teacher-scholars hired since 2000 now make up half of the full-time faculty––a milestone. Our freshmen, drawn, as they have been for generations, from Brooklyn’s top high schools, generally rank in the top 25 percent of their class. About half of the two thousand undergraduates who were awarded degrees last June went on to further study; sixty-seven of them were inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest and most esteemed honor society in the country. Our successes are the result of the engagement and effort of students, faculty, staff, and administration; of unstintingly loyal and generous alumni; of friends of the College; and of supportive elected officials of the city and the state of New York. The Brooklyn College Foundation is an unfailing source of support, and we are deeply grateful. I thank you for your steadfast commitment to our mission, and I look forward to continuing our work together.
Christoph M. Kimmich President
Dear Alumni and Friends
--Once again it is my pleasure to present the Brooklyn College Foundation Annual Report, which describes the impact of the Foundation’s activities over the period July 2006 through June 2007. Chairing the Foundation has been a deeply satisfying experience for me for several reasons. As someone whose life was changed by the opportunities that were opened to me because of my Brooklyn College education, it is gratifying to see that the lives of today’s students are being similarly transformed—and to know that each of us can materially contribute to advancing this mission. Also, I feel fortunate to be working with such a capable and engaged board of trustees. Their experience, wisdom, and financial capacity are a phenomenal source of strength. I am grateful to all of my colleagues on the board for their shared sense of purpose, energy, and enthusiasm for our work together. In addition, President Kimmich and his team continue to provide strong, steady leadership for the College, and the success of the Foundation is due in large measure to the confidence the board feels in this leadership. Finally, the Foundation is in a period of exciting growth; we have completed our five-year $75 million campaign and are now actively considering the size and scope of a new campaign. I am certain we will surpass the campaign just concluded, as we spread the compelling message of how Brooklyn College continues to transform lives. I encourage you to learn more about our mission to provide affordable quality higher education to successive generations of Brooklyn College students. As you will see in this report, gifts to the Foundation provide scholarships, help to attract and retain outstanding faculty, maintain our beautiful campus, and prepare our students for a successful career and life. Please join us!
Marjorie Magner, ’69 Chair Brooklyn College Foundation
is a graduating senior with a near-perfect grade point average of 3.957. She says the scholarship she received from the Brooklyn College Foundation has allowed her to choose internships that best serve her academic interests without having to consider whether they are remunerated. She also enjoyed more time to pursue extracurricular activities, such as tutoring in the Brooklyn College Learning Center and singing in the Hillel Choir. A business, management, and finance major, Sanders plans to pursue an academic career as a finance professor. Sanders—a poet, a singer, and a brown belt in karate—was president of her high school honor society. She was also on the debating team and won the Speaker’s Trophy in the Inter-Yeshiva competition, an experience that led her to consider a teaching career: “It’s a field that requires excellent communication skills,” she observes.
Melissa Sanders
Lynchy Lezeau
received the Barer Family
Scholarship, an endowed scholarship that supports high-achieving students, particularly those from difficult family situations. When Lezeau was eleven, his mother went off to work one day in his native Haiti and, in his words, “simply never came back. She just dropped dead.” Lezeau is not sure how his mother died, but he’s certain that if she had had access to better medical care, she would have survived. “Instead of hating the whole medical system, I decided I would try to change it,” says Lezeau, a sophomore with a double major in French and chemistry who plans to become a cardiologist or an obstetrician: “I want to focus on health issues for women and babies,” he says. The financial support Lezeau receives means he has been able to immerse himself full time in his schoolwork and in noteworthy cocurricular activities. “I grew up in a community where we always helped each other out,” says Lezeau, who has volunteered in homeless shelters, prisons, and nursing homes, and at the New York Medical Center and the Central Park Conservancy since coming to this country five years ago. , a Brooklyn College senior and a member of the William E. Macaulay Honors College, has a similar outlook. During an internship with Brooklyn Congressman Edolphus Towns, Pennisi worked in constituent services and was “struck by how many immigrants needed help but were unaware of what services were available to them.” So Pennisi, working with Brooklyn College alumnus Ryan Merola, ’07, a winner of both a prestigious Truman Scholarship and a New York City Urban Fellowship, cofounded the nonprofit Coalition for Government and Community Resources, which hosts a series of workshops whereby government officials and representatives from grassroots organizations inform immigrant students about available services. It also sponsors a volunteer program in which students from the Brooklyn College Honors Academy tutor ESL students.
Mary Pennisi
“I come from a family of Italian immigrants,” says Pennisi. “I grew up in a household that had a different cultural perspective from the mainstream. That gave me an understanding of the hardships immigrants face.” Majoring in political science and philosophy of law, Pennisi plans to become an immigration lawyer. Melissa, Lynchy, and Mary are three of the nearly one thousand students supported by the Brooklyn College Foundation in the 2006–2007 academic year with some $2 million in scholarship money—a rise from 910 students who received nearly $1.8 million in support in the 2005–2006 academic year. This funding makes a critical difference in the lives of students with diverse ambitions—whether they aspire to become college teachers or business entrepreneurs. Some students received scholarships to compensate for low-paying internships. Others are sponsored for study-abroad and research trips through such programs as the Tow Student Travel Stipend and the Furman Fellows program. Those funds enabled students to travel to Thailand, Israel, India, and a dozen other countries to work on projects that have included helping health care workers in low-income communities, studying art or a new language, and participating in an archaeological excavation.
The synergy of motivated students and a distinguished faculty equals a superior education. The Brooklyn College Foundation acknowledges and rewards excellence in teaching and the scholarly endeavors of our faculty. Broeklundian professorships provide $10,000 annually to underwrite faculty research and creativity for a five-year period. Over the last three years, the funding for this program has grown to $100,000 annually. Thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends of the College, the board of trustees approved a budget increase for the coming year that will support three additional Broeklundian professorships. This year the Foundation also provided funds to allow professors to spend time out of the classroom to pursue groundbreaking research.
Broeklundian Professor Viraht Sahni
has been working for more than thirty-five years with graduate students and colleagues to develop Quantal Density Functional Theory, (QDFT), an innovative approach to predicting the structure of atoms from the density of the electron cloud surrounding them. “The more I studied traditional Density Functional Theory, the more I realized that it was a crapshoot,” says Sahni, a native of India who received his Ph.D. from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1972. “The conventional approach was like throwing darts at a dartboard to get your answers.” So Sahni looked in a new direction—outside the box, as it were. His fresh insights were published in 1987 in a paper written collaboratively with a Brooklyn College graduate student, Manoj Harbola. More than sixty papers on the subject of Quantal Density Functional Theory have followed. Sahni’s first book on QDFT appeared in 2004, and he is now conducting research for a second volume. “People have a perception of physics as abstract, cold, and inaccessible,” Sahni says. “But really, this is poetry—sheer poetry. It’s just breathtaking.”
Distinguished Professor Edwin Burrows
is another faculty member receiving Foundation support. In 1999 Burrows won a Pulitzer Prize for his book Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898, which he coauthored with CUNY Graduate Center Distinguished Professor Michael Wallace. Burrows, a Broeklundian professor from 2001 to 2006, is currently one of nine faculty members whose work is being funded by the Foundation’s Unsponsored Research Program, which underwrites released time from teaching responsibilities. “New York is a place where people come to start over,” says Burrows. “Consequently, there has been not much focus on local history.” In contrast, Burrows has devoted much of his scholarly research to the history of the city. His forthcoming book, The Prisoners of New York: Memories of Captivity in the American Revolution, is a study of the 20,000 Americans taken prisoner during the Revolutionary War, many of whom were detained in and around New York City and died of malnutrition, disease, and physical abuse. Their stories, Burrows says, “offer a wealth of
detail about how ordinary people experienced the Revolution. They also provide revealing insights into how the Revolution would be remembered in years to come.” Burrows, who has won several awards for his teaching, often shares his discoveries with his students as he is especially interested in the response of a group that, for the most part, has grown up in the city he writes so much about. “I have learned as much from the savvy and tenacity and dreams of my students as they have learned from me,” he says. Having worked on this book for more than five years, Burrows says the Foundation’s grant was timely. “The generosity of the Brooklyn College Foundation is one of the reasons that our faculty continues to excel in so many fields,” he says. “The support of the Foundation has been crucial to my continuing research on more than one occasion.”
A state-of-the-art training facility for students
As the West Quad Project nears completion, the Foundation has been at work raising $75 million in public and private money for a new performing arts center on the east side of campus.
Prologue
Brooklyn College has a long and distinguished history of vibrant and highly regarded programs in music, theater, television and radio, and film. In recent years, however, our performing arts facilities have become technically outdated, inefficient, and unattractive. They have to be rebuilt if the College is to remain competitive in music and theater, with facilities equal to our reputation for excellence. Furthermore, a new facility will be a tremendous asset to the borough of Brooklyn, which has a paucity of first-class performance venues for small-scale, community-based productions that capitalize on the borough’s diversity and unique energy. Thus, the first priority is to create a modern training platform for the College’s students, the second, to
consolidate and deepen the College’s standing as a primary cultural and intellectual resource for the borough. The need and urgency were apparent, but the challenge of funding such an ambitious project seemed daunting, especially at a time when the College was undertaking its largest capital program in more than forty years— construction of the West Quad.
Act 1
A conversation in 2003 with President Christoph M. Kimmich sparked the interest of Leonard Tow, ’50, and his wife, Claire, ’52, dedicated alumni with a deep interest in and love for the performing arts. Together with President Kimmich, they developed a vision for a new performing arts center—one that would ultimately call for an unprecedented commitment from many of the College’s other loyal alumni as well as from the Brooklyn College Foundation. That vision was further articulated in 2004, when the
Tows offered a gift of $10 million toward the design and construction of a center for the performing arts. Their pledge was contingent on the Brooklyn College Foundation’s securing an additional $15 million and financial commitments to supplement construction costs.
The most advanced performance space in the borough of Brooklyn
The Leonard and Claire Tow Center for the Performing Arts will provide state-of-the-art training facilities for our talented and diverse student body. It will house a versatile modular theater of 250 seats, technologically the most advanced performance space in the borough of Brooklyn, and a smaller recital hall of two hundred seats for musical performances.
Act II
In the three years that have passed since that proposal, the vision for a performing arts center has matured and expanded. Recently, a working committee of performing arts faculty and architect consultants produced the broad outline of a plan for a new performing arts building and the renovation and modernization of the College’s outdated performance facilities. While details remain to be finalized, the plan calls for the demolition of Gershwin Hall and construction of the Leonard and Claire Tow Center for the Performing Arts on ground now occupied by Gershwin Hall and a portion of the open space adjacent to the Whitman Auditorium.
Epilogue
The Brooklyn College Foundation so far has raised, along with the Tows’ initial $10 million leadership gift, $18.5 million in private campaign support and $17 million in public support and has received commitments from the City University of New York for the remainder of the funds. The new integrated and flexible performing arts complex will bring added luster to the east end of the campus architecturally, balance the transformation now taking place at the west end of the Quad, and bear testimony to the Foundation’s vital role in supporting the College in this exciting period of unparalleled renewal—and in the many years to come.
Dénouement
The plan has won acclaim from Foundation board members, donors—in particular from the Tows, who expressed their delight at the architectural scheme—and faculty members who praised the scope of instructional features and the potential for creative opportunities that should ensure an extraordinary education in the arts for our students.
Individual Donors
Thank You!
The Trustees of the Brooklyn College Foundation are pleased to acknowledge the following donors, whose gifts made between July 1, 2006, and June 30, 2007, enabled the Foundation to make notable contributions to the College. Your generous gifts play a major role in transforming our campus into a state-of-the-art, twenty-first century community. They support new technologies in the classroom, improved facilities on campus, faculty awards for groundbreaking research, and academic scholarships for deserving students. We are delighted to acknowledge the growing number of alumni and friends who support the Foundation in furthering Brooklyn College’s mission of providing affordable, highquality education for extraordinary students.

The Executive Committee considers key recommendations from the board committees listed below, and sets the agenda for the full board meeting.
solicitation, and stewardship. Notable accomplishments during the past year include: • A successful transition from an outside consultancy to an onsite professional development team, which now has twelve fulltime staff members. • Expanding efforts to include major gifts, planned giving, and research services. • Increasing fundraising by 72 percent. • Surpassing the $75 million campaign target set in 2001.
Audit and Finance Committee Chair: Barry Feirstein
The Audit and Finance Committee selects and works with the Foundation’s auditors, currently Loeb & Troper, to ensure that the Foundation continues to meet nationally accepted auditing standards. In addition to reviewing the annual financial statements and budget, the committee examines employee policies and procedures to ensure Foundation compliance with CUNY best practices. This spring two such policies were recommended and adopted by the full board: the Whistleblower and Code of Ethics policies.
• Increasing the number of gifts by 45 percent (restricted and unrestricted).
Investment Committee Chair: Martin Sass
The Investment Committee is charged with prudently building the Foundation’s endowment fund to secure the long-term future of Brooklyn College. Committee members are responsible for the development and periodic review of the fund’s Investment Policies and Guidelines and for asset allocation to various investment strategies to achieve appropriate diversification of the fund’s investments based on its needs and objectives. The Committee selects, meets with, and manages a variety of outside professional investment managers (in consultation with an outside adviser and monitoring firm). In FY07 the wise stewardship of the Investment Committee resulted in an increase of 18.1 percent in the fund’s investment portfolio.
Development Committee Chair: Howard Wohl
The Development Committee provides oversight of the fundraising activities of the Foundation, including monitoring the staffing and goal-setting of the Development Office. Members provide critical advice on alumni research, cultivation,
Governance and Nominating Committee Chair: Myron Kandel
The Governance and Nominating Committee is charged with ensuring best-practice governance of the Foundation and continued development of the Foundation’s board of trustees. Responsibilities include directing research for prospective board members and providing recommendations for new board candidates, for officers of the Foundation, and for honorary governors. In FY07 the Foundation welcomed three trustees: Sol Barer, Chairman and CEO, Celgene Corporation; Florence Cohen Rosen, President, Rosen Associates Management Corporation; and Richard Wilpon, Partner, Sterling Equities. Stanley Goldstein, Morton Topfer, Jerry Della Femina, Saul Katz, and Jim Fantaci, were nominated and elected as honorary governors. The committee did significant work in establishing a memorandum of understanding between the College and the Foundation.
Planned Giving Committee Chair: Sam Beller
Planned Giving Committee members provide guidance and technical expertise on planned gifts and the solicitation of such gifts. In FY07 this committee spearheaded the development and implementation of a new planned giving program, including expanded outreach and marketing efforts. Notable achievements included the approval and launch of a charitable gift annuity program and an expanded bequest marketing program, which resulted in nearly $2 million in new revenue.
Student Life Committee Chair: Zachary Solomon
The Student Life Committee engages Foundation trustees in campus activities and programs that enrich the lives of students. Foundation trustees are joined on this committee by key faculty members, including the Undergraduate Dean, the Dean of Student Affairs, and two students who work with trustees to identify critical student needs. A notable development this past year was the Board Leadership Forum, a speakers’ bureau connecting trustees with students through the Magner Center for Career Development and Internships. This year, the committee recommended support for student volunteerism and a student/faculty advisement symposium. In addition, the committee voted to support the BC Conservatory of Music Chamber Choir Tour of China 2008. The Chamber Choir will perform as part of a salute to the Olympic Games in Beijing based on the Conservatory’s tradition of excellence and the Chamber Choir’s reputation.
Performing Arts Center Committee Chair: Don Buchwald

Legacy Society
We gratefully acknowledge the members of our Legacy Society, a group of generous alumni and friends who have named the Brooklyn College Foundation in their wills, trusts, life-income gifts, insurance policies, or retirement plans. We are truly thankful for their extraordinary commitment to securing the future of the College.
“The education I received at Brooklyn College was outstanding, and I felt compelled to give back. While we paid virtually no tuition fees, today’s students must pay substantial fees, and they deserve the same opportunities we earlier students had. Your planned gift to the College can give hardworking students the chance to attend Brooklyn College and to receive the top-notch education that will lead them to rewarding careers.”

Gifts that Support Brooklyn College
Brooklyn College relies on the generosity of individuals, foundations, and corporations to support our mission of providing a high-quality, affordable education for deserving students. There are many ways that donors can help us achieve our mission.
The Annual Fund
Annual gifts by alumni and friends to the Brooklyn College Foundation underwrite current needs that cannot be funded by state assistance, tuition, or fees. Unrestricted gifts to the Annual Fund support scholarships, facilities, cocurricular student-learning opportunities, equipment for classrooms and laboratories, special seminars, and faculty development initiatives. As public funding dwindles, the College must rely more and more on private contributions. For more information about the Annual Fund please contact Stephanie Ehrlich, Associate Director, Annual Fund, at (718) 951-5074, or sehrlich@brooklyn.cuny.edu.
Establishing a Scholarship, Award, or Prize
The Brooklyn College Foundation offers more than six hundred scholarships and awards—valued at nearly $2 million annually—that help our best and most ambitious students meet the expenses of their education. Within limits, a scholarship, award, or prize may reflect the specific wishes of a donor. Many funds have been established to honor a former student or faculty member or to encourage students in a particular academic area. Establishing a scholarship, award, or prize can also perpetuate the memory of a loved one. For more information about establishing a scholarship, award, or prize, please contact Michelle Arrington, Deputy Director of Development, at (718) 951-5074, or Arrington@brooklyn.cuny.edu.
The Legacy Society: Planned Gifts and Bequests
Members of the Brooklyn College Legacy Society have made a provision for the College in their estate planning. The Brooklyn College Foundation offers several future-oriented investment opportunities for those who want to carry forward the spirit of excellence at Brooklyn College, including lifeincome trust, charitable lead trust, life insurance, and gifts of stock or real estate. Legacy Society members may also make a planned gift in the form of a bequest. For more information about the Legacy Society or making a planned gift, please contact William Healy, Senior Philanthropic Adviser, at (718) 951-5074, or WHealy@brooklyn.cuny.edu.

Matching Gifts: Double the Impact of Your Donation
Every year, more than seven thousand corporations provide matching funds to educational and cultural organizations across the country. If you are affiliated with such a company, you may be eligible to have your gift to the Brooklyn College Foundation matched. Your company’s human resources department or personnel office is the most likely source of specific information. Complete the matching-gift form provided by your employer and send it with your gift. The Foundation will process the company form and notify you when the match is received.
