                                Overview of EU Grants

Definition
The Commission awards money in the form of grants in order to implement projects or
activities in relation to European Union policies. These grants may be awarded within fields
as diverse as research, education, health, consumer protection, protection of the environment,
humanitarian aid, etc.

        Culture 2007: should replace Culture 2000
         Aims: promoting transnational mobility, both for artists and works, and encouraging intercultural
         dialogue, by supplementing action by the Member States. A little over 400 million euro will be devoted
         to the programme.

        YOUTH in Action: should replace YOUTH (action 1 to 5 and International
         cooperation)
         With a budget of 915 million euro, the programme will be accessible to young people aged
         between 13 and 30 in the Member States and third countries. “Youth in action” will group together a
         variety of actions such as youth exchanges (objective: 35 000 projects by 2013), “European Voluntary
         Service” (objective: 10 000 volunteers/year) and “Youth for the world” aimed at developing projects
         with third countries.

        Action Programme for education and lifelong learning:
         With a budget of 13 600 million euro over seven years, the new programme will provide the Union
         with an instrument to help improve the quality of education and training systems. The programme will
         comprise four sectoral programmes concentrating on school education (Comenius), higher education
         (Erasmus), vocational training (Leonardo Da Vinci) and adult education (Grundtvig).

         ‘Citizens for Europe’: should replace the Community Action Programme to
         support bodies working in the field of Active European Citizenship (town
         twinning, support civil society organization, support events and information tools
         about Europe)

         the work of actors working on energy efficiency and renewable energies at the local and
         regional level. The main tools are training workshops and online events. Additionally
         information is provided on case studies, good practice, European legislation and programmes.
