Research Excellence
T
he EMD Serono Research Institute in Rockland, MA and the EMD Serono Research Center in Billerica, MA are focused on developing new targeted medicines in the therapeutic areas of oncology and reproductive health. With expertise in small molecule chemistry, antibody technologies and proprietary proteinengineering platforms, combined with an understanding of the biology behind disease, the US Research group is well positioned to continue building a strong innovative pipeline. More than 150 researchers at the Rockland and Billerica sites, including chemists, biologists, pharmacologists and informaticians, are committed to the development of both orally bio-available and protein therapeutics to meet serious unmet medical needs. The goals of the US Research group are three-fold:
Oncology
EMD Serono has made a major investment in developing anti-cancer therapies at both US research sites. Building upon established strengths in cancer biology, signal transduction and small molecule inhibitors, along with molecular modeling, antibody technology and protein engineering, EMD Serono is focusing on meeting the urgent need for new efficacious drugs that treat a range of cancers, including lung, breast, pancreatic, lymphoma, multiple myeloma and more.
Fertility
Infertility and reproductive health are historical strengths of EMD Serono’s research teams and remain areas of focus. In addition to developing new biotherapeutics within the traditional areas of ovulation induction and assisted reproduction, the EMD Serono Research Institute is also exploring new technologies to increase the success rates of in vitro fertilization treatments.
• Discovering and developing innovative new molecules as well as line extensions to build on EMD Serono’s therapeutic portfolio in infertility—an existing core disease area • Pursuing drug discovery efforts to create innovative targeted therapies in oncology, a new and important disease area with high unmet medical needs • Also in the oncology area, the development of new immuno-therapeutic approaches for elimination of tumor cells.

Global Partnerships and Alliances
While EMD Serono has fully integrated R&D capabilities in-house, the company also understands the business potential of strategic relationships and alliances with other biotech companies, clinical research organizations and academic groups. As a global partner of choice, EMD Serono’s worldwide business development deals have included partnerships with leading companies worldwide, such as Amgen, Genentech, OSI, INDex, ZymoGenetics, Micromet, NovImmune, BioMarin, Genmab, and Rigel Pharmaceuticals. These partnerships give EMD Serono a solid foundation for growth in the area of oncology, with particular focus on lung, breast and prostate cancer; multiple myeloma; T-cell lymphomas; and B-cell malignancies.
EMD Serono Biotech Center, Inc.
The EMD Serono Biotech Center is dedicated to producing high purity drugs in a reproducible and efficient manner while maintaining superior quality standards consistent with current Good Manufacturing Practices. This 24,300 sq. ft. facility produces investigational protein therapies for use in development programs, toxicology studies and early phase clinical trials. Features of this leadingedge facility include two segregated suites, dedicated water- and air-handling systems to ensure purity and sterility, and multiple systems for documenting and controlling quality of all aspects of the manufacturing process. The focus of the EMD Serono Biotech Center team is to oversee process transfer and scale-up, protein production and product release with an unwavering commitment to quality, never forgetting that the patient is the ultimate customer.

Planned Expansion of Research in Billercia
EMD Serono recently announced a planned expansion of its research operations in the US with an anticipated investment of $50 million at its Billerica facility northwest of Boston, Massachusetts. The investment will support the construction of a center of excellence in discovery, creating critical mass in research with a common goal of finding new treatments for unmet medical needs.
Once complete, the EMD Serono Research Institute will accommodate approximately 200 scientists with expertise in cancer biology, cancer immunotherapy, oncogene signaling, manufacturing cell lines, medicinal chemistry, molecular modeling, protein engineering, and therapeutic antibodies, across the research areas of cancer and fertility, as well as approximately 50 employees in Technical Operations who specialize in process development and protein production. The company’s protein production facility in Billerica—the EMD Serono Biotech Center, Inc.—which manufactures products for early stage clinical testing, is a significant reason why the site was selected for expansion; the close proximity of protein production to research drives collaborative interactions and supports the rapid transition from research to manufacturing.
