As a general policy, grants are not made to publicly funded educational institutions. However, private organizations or coalitions seeking to improve and broaden access to public education may be considered for grant support. Solutions to the problems of today's world still lie in the values of innovation, practicality, hard work, and compassion. Grants are made annually after an extensive review by the staff and all the directors of the Foundation. Application for grants are considered in the following areas:   The William Randolph Hearst Foundation The two Foundations (The Hearst Foundation, and William Randolph Hearst Foundation are administered out of the headquarters in New York City, which reviews all proposals from organizations located east of the Mississippi River. Requests from organizations located west of the Mississippi are reviewed by our office in San Francisco. The charitable goals of the two Foundations are essentially the same, and reflect the philanthropic interests of William Randolph Hearst -- Education, Health, Social Service and Culture. Within these four areas, the Foundations assist institutions in providing opportunities to underserved and underrepresented populations. Draw up a long-range plan that projects goals at least five years ahead.  Research potential funders thoroughly. A cursory look through a foundation directory isn’t enough. Then, apply what you’ve learned to your proposal. Don’t ignore a funder’s guidelines in the hopes of “fitting” your proposal into their niche.  It’s worth reviewing successful application from other grantseekers only if their project is similar to yours. You'll not only get some good ideas, but an understanding of the competition, too.  Having verified available funding, divide your efforts into three further phases: Writing the proposal, marketing and management.  Don't spend too much time writing: It should take about 40% of your efforts. Try to get program officials to review a 35 page summary of your plan to make sure you're on the right track.  Basic rules of proposal writing: Don't ask for more than you need; take your time writing the proposal; never lie; never use the same application twice; be upfront about asking for money; and don't waste time getting to the point.  Don't fall into the trap of overlooking marketing. It should take at least 10% of your time. This means ensuring that you have the right image for the funder. Make sure you look professional, and involve key community figures in your work where possible.  Management is vital. You must be able to demonstrate in your proposal that you have the management skills/experience that can deliver success.  Know the funder. It's been estimated that chances for success go up as much as 300% when the grantee establishes close contact with the funder before and during the actual proposal writing process. Don't ask for hidden agendas, but do find out about general trends or new ideas the funder is currently interested in.  Always work to a timetable. Make sure you have enough time to complete your application so it meets the funder's deadlines. If you don't have time to do it properly, don't compete for the grant at all.  Give thought to the idea of "cooperation." Many funders, particularly federal agencies, like applications where more than one organization is involved. But if you submit a cooperative proposal, remember to make sure that there is both an informal and formal relationship between grantees. -2- Funding Watch  When dealing with any funder, but especially federal agencies, remember to read the instructions before applying for support. It sounds simple, but federal competitions live by two rules: 1. The agency is always right, and 2. When in doubt, refer to rule 1.  Don't just tell the funder about the existence of the problem you intend to solve.  Prove it, with statistics, case studies, testimony, and any other measurable data that's available.  Know your budget. It’s probably the first thing a funder will look at in your proposal.  It needs to be realistic, and give credibility to your entire proposal. Write the budget separately from the rest of the application, make sure that the figures are correct, and that they reflect the value of your application. Keep a record of how you arrived at your costs. Federal Business Opportunities Website The Integrated Acquisition Environment (IAE) and the FedBizOpps support team would like to introduce a new feature allowing you to perform a "Quick Search" directly from the homepage - (http://www.fbo.gov or http://www.fedbizopps.gov). The quick search feature is located near the top left hand corner of the homepage. This allows you to make keyword searches for words or phrases that relate to your business. Please use double quotation marks to enclose phrases and solicitation numbers. Click the [go] button to produce a listing of all the documents that match the keyword(s) you entered. Click the Advanced Search [go] button to utilize a variety of other search options. These fields include searching by procurement classification codes, NAICS codes, solicitation number, specified date ranges, place of performance, set-aside codes, and agencies. We recommend you only use a few of the search options; do not use all of them or you will narrow the search too far. Click "Start Search" and your results will be displayed.  A few other writing hints: 1. Avoid filling your proposals with jargon. 2. Begin each section with a strong, clear sentence. 3. Don't go overboard, but do try to make your proposal interesting to read. 4. Check with the funder to see if there's a preferred format, typestyle, etc. Communications On [increasing] Research Efforts (CORE) Initiative – Series Two Upcoming OSPR Workshop: April 11, 2007 – Find Funding – RH100 – 11:30am – 1:00pm April 25, 2007 – Appendices – ARC 201 – 1:00pm – 3:00pm Monthly Discussion Series Topics of Interest to USP Faculty And Students March, 29, 2007 Laura Pontiggia A cooperative game theory approach to classification analysis -3- Funding Watch Agency American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR) Title AFAR Research Grants http://www.afar.org/grants. html Deadline Dec 15, 2007 Description AFAR funds research projects concerned with understanding the basic mechanisms of aging. Projects investigating age-related diseases are also supported, especially if approached from the point of view of how basic aging processes may lead to these outcomes. Projects concerning mechanisms underlying common geriatric functional disorders are also encouraged, as long as these include connections to fundamental problems in the biology of aging. Projects that deal strictly with clinical problems such as the diagnosis and treatment of disease, health outcomes, or the social context of aging are not eligible. Research subjects appropriate for support by the March of Dimes include basic biological processes governing development, genetics, clinical studies, studies of reproductive health, environmental toxicology, and social and behavioral studies. In the area of social and behavioral sciences, the March of Dimes is interested in applications proposing research that advances the understanding of - and therefore the ability to prevent - the cognitive and behavioral risks that affect outcomes of pregnancy, the perinatal period, and subsequent child development. The proposed research should focus on one or more of the following health disparities research areas: 1. Further identifying and assessing sources of racial and ethnic disparities to illuminate how and why healthcare disparities occur 2. Increasing awareness about racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare among the general public and key stakeholders 3. Researching ethical issues and other barriers to eliminate disparities in healthcare 4. Developing methods for eliminating racial and ethnic disparities 5. Evaluating the effectiveness of intervention strategies March of Dimes Request for Proposals April 30, 2007 http://www.marchofdim es.com/professionals/6 91_14434.asp Pfizer, Inc.
