Himalayas in Sanskrit means "the abode of the snow". The Himalayan range
is the youngest and highest mountain range in the world and stretches
across Nepal, China, India, Bhutan, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Gleaming

eight of the world's highest fourteen peaks over 8000m, including the
highest of them all, Mt. Everest and numerous other trekking peaks

Everest, Kanchanjunga, Lhotse etc lie in this region. The mountain region
rises to an altitude of 1000 to 4000m. This region accounts for about 64%
of total land area. Prominent ranges in this region include the
Mahabharat and Churia ranges. The southernmost region is the Terai. The
low-land Terai occupies about 17% of the total land area of the country.
