to us a son is given,

“ADULTOLESCENTS”

Christian Smith, professor of sociology at
Notre Dame, wrote in the most recent Books
and Culture a review of six books that deal
with this new phenomenon..
The 6 books reviewed were…
 Jeffrey Jensen Arnett, Emerging Adulthood: The Winding Road from
the Late Teens through the Twenties

 Jeffrey Jensen Arnett and Jennifer Lynn Tanner, eds., Emerging
Adults in America: Coming of Age in the 21st Century

 James L. Heft, SM, ed., Passing on the Faith: Transforming
Traditions for the Next Generation of Jews, Christians, and
    Muslims

 D. Wayne Osgood, E. Michael Foster, Constance Flanagan, and
Gretchen Ruth, eds., On Your Own Without a Net: The Transition to
    Adulthood for Vulnerable Populations

 Richard Settersten, Frank Furstenberg, and Rubén Rumbaut, eds., On
the Frontier of Adulthood: Theory, Research, and Public Policy

 Jean M. Twenge, Generation Me: Why Today's Young Americans
Are More Confident, Assertive, Entitled—and More Miserable Than
    Ever Before
Smith writes…
 What has emerged from this new situation
    has been variously labeled ―extended
    adolescence,‖ ―youthhood,‖ ―adultolescence,‖
    ―young adulthood,‖ the ―twenty-somethings,‖
    and ―emerging adulthood.‖
 One way of describing this group is to
highlight the tendency to delay adulthood or
stay in the youth mindset longer than we
    used to.

 One way of describing this group is to
highlight the tendency to delay adulthood
or stay in the youth mindset longer than
    we used to.
What’s happening here?

 It seems that many of today’s ―emerging
adults‖ are not being prepared for ―full
    development‖!
 In their desire to shelter their children from
the harsh realities of life they end up not
    preparing them for Life.
 If they’re not careful, they may end up stuck
    with them…for life!
What are we preparing them for?
MATURITY is Progressive Growth

 Increasingly ―others-centered‖ instead of
    ―me-centered‖
 Learning to delay personal gratification in the
    pursuit of the greater good
 Learning to think and act decisively under
    pressure

Deuteronomy 32:10-12
10In a desert land he found him,
in a barren and howling waste.
       He shielded him and cared for him;
he guarded him as the apple of his eye,
11 like an eagle that stirs up its nest

       and hovers over its young,
that spreads its wings to catch them
and carries them on its pinions.
12 The LORD alone led him;

no foreign god was with him.

In contrast to the Western model, the Jews have their
Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah

 "Bar Mitzvah" literally means "son of the
    commandment."
 "Bar" is "son" in Aramaic. "Mitzvah" is
    "commandment" in both Hebrew and
    Aramaic.
 Technically, the term refers to the child who
is coming of age, and it is strictly correct to
refer to someone as "becoming a bar (or bat)
    mitzvah."
In contrast… Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah

 A Jewish boy automatically becomes a bar mitzvah
upon reaching the age of 13 years, and a girl (bat
mitzvah) upon reaching the age of 12 years.
 Bar mitzvah is not about being a full adult in every
sense of the word, ready to marry, go out on your
own, earn a living and raise children.
 Bar mitzvah is simply the age when a person is held
responsible for his actions and minimally qualified to
marry. Certainly, a 13-year-old child is capable of
knowing the difference between right and wrong and
of being held responsible for his actions.

Real, maturing believers are

 Those who have come to a truly saving
encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ
 Those who have been made aware of their
sinful condition and have come to the Cross
for their forgiveness and redemption from it.
 Those who are now carefully cultivating an
awareness of what pleases and displeases
the Lord and moves toward the former while
    increasingly shunning the latter.

Leader of the Band – Dan Fogelberg

A lonely child, alone and wild, a cab'net-maker's son
His hands were meant for diff'rent work
And his heart was known to none
He left his home and went his lone
                  and solitary way
And he gave to me a gift I know
                 I never can repay
Leader of the Band – Dan Fogelberg

A quiet man of music denied a simpler fate
He tried to be a soldier once
           but his music wouldn't wait
He earned his love through discipline
            a thund'ring velvet hand
His gentle means of sculpting souls
          took me years to understand
Leader of the Band – Dan Fogelberg
                 CHORUS
The leader of the band is tired
and his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs thru my instrument
and his song is in my soul
My life has been a poor attempt
             to imitate the man
           I'm just a living legacy
to the leader of the band
Leader of the Band – Dan Fogelberg
      My brother's lives were diff'rent
        for they heard another call
          One went to Chicago
and the other to St. Paul
           And I'm in Colorado
when I'm not in some hotel
Living out this life I chose
and grown to know so well
Leader of the Band – Dan Fogelberg
I thank you for the music
and your stories of the road
I thank you for the freedom
when it came my time to go
I thank you for the kindness
and the times when you got tough
      And, Papa, I don't think I've said
         "I love you" near enough
Leader of the Band – Dan Fogelberg
                  CHORUS
The leader of the band is tired
and his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs thru my instrument
and his song is in my soul
