Brian Pulley, Illinois Farm Business Farm Management Field Staff Gary Schnitkey, Department of Agricultural Economics, University of Illinois This program is designed to aid farmers evaluate the economic alternatives of late planting for three options given that a crop has not been planted: 1. Plant corn 2. Plant soybeans 3. Take prevented planting. Prevented planting is available if an Actual Production History (APH), Crop Revenue Coverage (CRC), Income Protection (IP), or Revenue Assurance (RA) policy has been purchased. Prevented planting is not available for Group Risk Plan (GRP) or Group Risk Income Plan (GRIP) policies. Hence, the prevented planting option is not applicable to GRP or GRIP. On the next page, costs yet to be incurred need to be entered for the alternatives. Only enter those costs that will still have to be paid. If fertilizer has been applied, its cost should not be entered as its costs will not vary across the three options. Farmers should consult with crop insurance agents before making decisions. In particular, farmers need to contact crop insurance agents if prevented planting may be taken. Agents will need to determine if the farm is eligible for prevented planting and what crop will be prevented planted. This spreadsheet assumes that no crop has been planted. A different set of options exist if a crop has already been planted This spreadsheet may be modified as time progresses. Check back on farmdoc for later versions of the spreadsheet.
