Scholarships for Prospective Students Campus Honors Program www.honors.uiuc.edu Entering freshmen with high ACT/SAT scores and exceptional high school records who wish to be considered for admission to the Campus Honors Program (CHP) should be sure to mark the "honors" box 29 on the university application form, complete the required paragraph, and conscientiously provide all other information and written responses asked for in the application. A supplemental CHP application form is available from November 1 to February 1 each year. (The supplemental CHP form is to be used only when students change their mind after filing the Illinois application and wish to be considered for admission to the CHP, or when there is a significant change in the student's academic record, accomplishments, or personal circumstances that the student wishes to report.) Applicants are notified of admission status in early April. Out-of-state students admitted to the CHP may receive a scholarship in the form of a partial (renewable) tuition waiver. Students may apply for summer research and travel grants ($2,000 and up to $1,000 respectively). College of Engineering Scholarships Some departments in the College of Engineering offer merit scholarships to incoming students. In addition, numerous scholarships from corporations and student organizations are available for students who demonstrate academic excellence and leadership skills. Once enrolled, engineering students have many opportunities for scholarships. Scholarships are available through departments, corporations, and special programs, such as the Women in Engineering Program and the Morrill Engineering Program. Student organizations, such as the Society of Women Engineers, also award scholarships each year. Illinois General Assembly Scholarships Illinois law provides for each state legislator to award two scholarships annually to students attending any state-supported university. The awards can be two 4-year scholarships or eight 1-year scholarships. Students applying for a General Assembly Scholarship must be a resident within the legislative district of the awarding legislator and must contact their state senator or state representative for information on the application process. International Engineering Scholarships www.engr.uiuc.edu/international International engineering scholarships encourage engineering students to study abroad. Each scholarship winner receives $500 at the start of each of the first two semesters at Illinois; $3,000 for each 16-week semester (minimum of one, maximum of two consecutive semesters) that the student studies abroad; and help with roundtrip airfare to the study abroad destination. James Newton Matthews Scholars Program www.vcsa.uiuc.edu/leaders/Programs/scholarship.htm James Newton Matthews Scholarships are awarded to the very best and brightest incoming freshmen who have demonstrated academic achievement while in high school. Students are automatically considered for these scholarships when applying for freshman admission. Selection is based on ACT or SAT test scores, high school percentile ranks, and the application essays. Finalists for the Matthews Scholars Program will be interviewed by phone in February, and Scholars are notified in March or April. The awards are $2,000 per year, contingent upon the student maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale annually and progress toward a degree. Out-of-State Achievement Scholarships Scholarships are awarded to incoming first-year students who reside outside of Illinois. Students are automatically considered for these scholarships when applying for freshman admission. Selection is based on ACT or SAT test scores, high school percentile ranks, and the application essays. The Achievement Scholarship Awards, $4,000 per year, are renewable based upon satisfactory academic progress. Scholarships for Underrepresented Groups in Engineering Maureen L. and Howard N. Blitman Scholarship to Promote Diversity in Engineering www.nspe.org/scholarships/sc1-hs.asp This $5,000 scholarship is awarded to a high school senior from an ethnic minority. Virginia D. Henry Memorial Scholarship www.nspe.org/scholarships/sc1-hs.asp This $1,000 freshman-year scholarship is awarded to a female high school senior. The scholarship is awarded strictly on the basis of achievement. Mc4West Engineering Scholarships mc4west.com/project/education.html Tuition scholarships given to under represented Chicago-area students living near McCormick Place who are pursuing majors in construction-related engineering (civil, mechanical, or electrical) at the College of Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Nano-CEMMS Undergraduate www.nano-cemms.uiuc.edu The Center for Nanoscale Chemical-Electrical-Mechanical Manufacturing Systems (Nano-CEMMS) offers $500 scholarships to incoming students who demonstrate academic potential and a sincere interest in nanotechnology and nanomanufacturing. The award is renewable annually and could be increased following the first year for recipients who demonstrate academic excellence and active participation in the center. An applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; be a member of a group underrepresented in science, technology, or engineering (includes females, African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, Native Americans, Native Alaskans, and Native Pacific Islanders); and be an incoming University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign freshman in Aerospace Engineering, Applied Physics, Bioengineering, Chemistry, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Engineering Mechanics. National Society of Professional Engineers www.nspe.org/scholarships/sc-home.asp The National Society of Professional Engineers Auxiliary Scholarship, $1,000 per year for four years, is awarded to a female high school senior. It is awarded strictly on the basis of achievement. Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers www.shpe.org The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund have partnered to provide scholarship opportunities to students pursuing degrees in the engineering, mathematics, science, and computer science fields. An applicant must be of Hispanic background (one parent must be fully Hispanic or both parents must be half Hispanic); be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident (with permanent resident card); be a graduating high school senior, a community college student transferring to a four-year institution, or a continuing undergraduate or graduate student who will be enrolled full-time in a degree-seeking program; be majoring in engineering, mathematics, computer science, or physical or applied science; and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Deadline: June 15, 2007. Society of Women Engineers www.swe.org The Society of Women Engineers offers scholarships to women. High school seniors may request an application by email to hq@swe.org.
