         A REMINDER FROM S*CCEEDS
**When you send in your Transcripts, please remember to cross your Social Security Number, birthday, and Identification
         numbers out.**

         SOMETHING REALLY COOL!
Any center that has its entire child care staff registered with S*CCEEDS is eligible for a 100% participation certificate,
AND best of all; the name of the center will be prominently displayed at the S*CCEEDS table as a 100% participant at
         the annual conference in March.

WHAT IF THE TRAINER DOES NOT GIVE OUT BAR CODE LABELS?
Before registering for a child care workshop, ask if it is S*CCEEDS registered. If it is not, tell the Trainer you would
like to receive S*CCEEDS credit for classes and ask him/her to call our office to register future classes. If the workshop
is registered and the Trainer does not give you a Bar Code Label, talk to the Trainer after the session and ask that one be
         mailed to you.

WHERE CAN I FIND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT S*CCEEDS? For comprehensive information
about the S*CCEEDS program, go to the website at www.asccaz.org/scceeds or refer to the handbook. The
S*CCEEDS handbook and web page were designed to explain all aspects of the program. You may also contact a
         S*CCEEDS Program Specialist for assistance.

         ANY CHANGES?
Planning on a move or changing telephone numbers? Remember to contact a S*CCEEDS office nearest you.
Keeping your file information current will ensure you receive the most recent newsletter. At renewal time, if you can not

                                                           CHILDREN AND STRESS

Do you think children do not get stressed? Well, think again! Child development experts
state that today’s competitive times are forcing children to live in a society full of stress.
Children are constantly exposed to unsettling information and violence.

For children, a stressor can be as simple as too many extra curricular activities and not
having time to relax. Children attending child care can experience stress due to a change
         in drop-off or pick-up routines.

Children are showing the same symptoms of stress as adults. Watching for behavioral changes can determine if
a child is experiencing too much stress. Symptoms of stress may be temper outbursts or impulsive and stubborn
behaviors. Chronic stress signs are headaches, stomach aches, irritability, or the worsening of asthma and
         allergies.

What can be done to mend or even prevent this problem? One of the best solutions is to dedicate time to talk
to the child. Slow the pace of a child’s life. Focus on the positive. Provide a lot of unstructured time, more
         importantly, take time to PLAY!

If an adult is experiencing stress, chances are a child will associate with that behavior. Being aware of the
situation, learning to control the stress, and using problem solving techniques to reduce the stress, you serve as a
role model for children. Children are very perceptive, observant, and learn from imitating.

Help a child manage stress by using the following techniques:

♥Think about how you react to stress: Children learn from imitating the actions of parents and other adults.
♥Try to remember what it was like to be a child : View the situation on the child’s level of understanding.
♥Talk with a child about concerns and problem behavior: Communication is a source of information, comfort,
         and security.
♥Involve a child in decision making and problem solving processes: This will promote feelings of power and
         control for the child.
♥Select children’s books about stress and fears to read with a child: This gives assurance that there are
others in the world with the same problem and provides suggestions on how to manage the situation.
♥Use art and puppets to help a child express feelings and concerns: Strong feelings can be expressed through art
         experiences and dramatic play.
♥Provide physical outlets to vent built-up tension: physical activity releases negative tension.
♥Be generous with hugs, kisses, and other signs of affection: understanding and love are always needed,
         especially during times of stress.
