Respite Care Service Providers Chicago Metropolitan Area Respite care usually involves short-term temporary care of a child or adult with a disability to provide a short break from caregiving to families. Respite care may be provided for: a few hours a week; a week or two to enable families to take a vacation; a longer period in family emergencies. Respite care may be provided in the family home by a trained worker; the home of a host family or foster care family; or a facility that provides ongoing services to children and adults with disabilities. Respite care services are usually funded by public agencies and made available at no charge, or on a sliding scale based on family income. However, most agencies are only able to provide families with a limited number of respite hours per year. Out-of-home respite usually requires advance reservation and preparation.
